John P. Asling is a Toronto-born writer and editor living in Broadstairs on the Kent coast of England. His first short story collection - A Crack in Everything - was published in 2017. This was followed by Time Enough for Sadness, in 2019. He has published two dozen poems in Canada and the UK. He has been a youth worker, teacher, journalist and church executive. For the past fifteen years, he has been a freelance writer and editor. His stories have appeared in The Toronto Star, Litro Magazine and Sentinel Literary Quarterly. His first collection of poetry, tentatively titled, Love After Love Has Failed, is scheduled for publication in December 2023.

I remember my teacher, Mr Jim Truer, reading Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Jules Verne) to us for the last half hour every Friday afternoon. I have always loved stories, and this reading, and teachers sending me to the local public library for books, kept me reading stories. Finally, I said, I want to tell stories too - move people, touch them, provoke them to think in new ways. That still drives me today.(less)

Are you troubled by it? I’m not, really, though I admit I haven’t read classics such as Animal Farm or Moby Dick.
