Rebel Girls is a great project and i wildly celebrate the very existence of it BUT it could have been done much, much better. first of all, it's a bit too Western-oriented, too many US and UK women. it's also oversimplified for the children's readers – from their stories, one won't learn that Anna Politkovskaya or the Mirabal Sisters or Policarpa Salavarietta were ordered to be murdered, by their governments – by the system – or that Virginia Woolf committed suicide. there's not even one mention of other than heterosexual orientation (e.g. Virginia Woolf once again!). AND, among the rebel women, there's Margaret Thatcher. and she's praised, not criticized, not with a single word.
BUT, there are still some lovely, impressive, awesome stories there, very probably the majority of them.
i am torn. all the more since i translated the book.
and i hope Rebel Girls 2 are just lovely, impressive, emotional, and strong - and nothing else.
because FEMINISM, when done right, IS POWER.
