Here's the idea behind Hired Man, my first novel.

What would you do if a dying stranger begged you to save his daughter? Then paid you seven figures to do it?

"A rock-solid premise produces an enthralling plot and characters." - Kirkus Reviews

And Kirkus is no pushover. They don't like much.

Hi, folks. I'm Mark. I'm happy to meet you. Much of my career has been built around advertising; as a copywriter, creative director and video producer in Detroit. Watching this great city surge back to life after a 50-year downtown has been so exciting and invigorating! Hired Man is my 3rd attempt at a novel ... but this is the one that really took off. So, you fledgling writers out there; don't give up! You can do it!

However, when I get stuck and don't know what to write next, I usually back off the writing for a bit and do some open-ended research, often by physically driving around to potential story locations and "marinating" in actual environments (stores, restaurants, neighborhoods, etc.) where new sights, sounds, smells, textures and people sort of recharge my storytelling batteries. Sometimes a change of scenery, even for an hour or so, really helps me get the words flowing again. (less)

The first thing that popped into my mind was being able to control a story to my liking. To write a book that I'd like to read. The second thing that writing offers is a matchless creative outlet. Its only equal, I'm guessing, is composing and creating original music, but I'm not musical at all, so that's a guess. Thirdly, writing creates an honest legacy; my books will survive me. Whether they get read or not, I don't know, but I do know that I'm leaving behind an authentic record of my thoughts, passions, and imagination. That checks a box in my soul.(less)

5.0 out of 5 stars I had great fun reading this—sometimes the tense kind of fun

I had great fun reading this—sometimes the tense kind of fun, for balance of course—and it was over too fast. I think that makes this what they call a "page-turner." Cliches aside, I gladly picked up my copy as often and for as long as I could. Mark Beyer has quite a cast of characters going here and his each of his settings snapped into sharp focus in my mind. I can't wait to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked his protagonist

This is a crime novel that grabs the reader right away; a true "page turner"! I liked his protagonist, he reminded me of the characters that my favorite author Nelson DeMille creates, so I hope that Mark Beyer has another novel on the horizon! It is great read that you won't want to put down! You will not be disappointed if you read HIRED MAN ... 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, fun, and suspenseful page turner

Loved this book. I wasn’t expecting a page turner, however that’s exactly what what you get with Hired Man. The characters were unique but very relate-able, ultimately pushing me to find out what their fates were much later into the night than I anticipated. The pacing and plot kept me guessing without any gimmicks or overly complex schemes. This is a hidden gem for sure. Read this book!!

This was his first novel? Amazing. Great story. Great premise. An incredible page turner. This Beyer guy can really tell a story. Can't wait for his next book!

Hired Man is a stunning debut. The thriller crackles along in the foreground while Beyer explores the political and social dynamics of southeastern Michigan further towards the back. And the underlying themes—from religion to philanthropy to municipal corruption—plumb much deeper depths than your average detective story.

Beyer clearly knows this Hitchcockian territory; ordinary man thrust into an extraordinary situation that puts a grip on its reader and doesn't let go. Pearce Butler is a riveting character that keeps us guessing over and over again. Can't wait for the next Pearce Butler thrill ride!
