I don't rate my own books (or anthologies I appear in), I don’t read reviews, I don’t answer questions on the page itself (only ones asked on my profile page), so that everyone who engages with my work--no matter your opinion--can do so without fear of me seeing/responding.

Even though I don’t write reviews, I still rate most of the books I read because being honest about my tastes is how I’ll find other books I’ll love, both through Goodreads’s algorithms and recommendations from friends. I’m here primarily as a reader who has poor long-term memory and loves how Goodreads helps keeps track of all the books I’ve read/want to read!

About my ratings: 3 stars means I enjoyed the book; 4 stars means I couldn’t put it down (or put it down reluctantly at 3 a.m.); 5 stars means it made me laugh and/or cry and I was in awe of the writer’s skill. But I also have to admit that I average my scores (ex: a 4-star beginning with a 2-star ending is disappointing, but that book still gets a 3). And sometimes I’ll rate a book with 4 stars and then come back later and bump it up to 5, because if I’m thinking about it days/weeks/months later, that’s the sign of a great story. Whenever I reread a book, I post the higher rating—whether from my original impression or the reread. No rating doesn't necessarily mean I disliked it--I'm still logging books I read before I got my Goodreads account, so sometimes it just means I don't remember how I felt about that book.

About my “best-books-ever” shelf: If I adored a book on the 1st reading, I’ll give it 5 stars. But only upon a 2nd reading—which I hardly ever do—can a book transcend to the “best-books-ever” shelf if it is just as good the 2nd time around. These books are the literary equivalent of waffles (and boy, do I love waffles).

All in all, I take the rating system very seriously. Authors pour a lot of time and effort and love into their work, and I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings. So take my ratings with a grain of salt and try out the books I love as well as the books I didn’t connect with, because I would hate for you to miss out on the opportunity to fall in love with a story. ...more
