Debbie grew up loving nature and the outdoors. Her favorite childhood book was My Side of the Mountain, and she always dreamed of running away to the woods.

During her career at the YMCA, she started learning primitive skills at Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracker School and totally fell in love with the skills. After 20 years at the Y, she moved to NJ to work for Tom Brown Jr. administering his non-profit, Children of the Earth Foundation and ran his school office for a time.

Debbie left NJ to actually live primitively and to teach others. She founded a non-profit, Ways of the Earth Living Museum and lived for a year and a half in a shelter she built. Sadly the organization closed, but new land has been purchased and construction of the village will be
