More Great Podcasts

Calvinist Batman - Episode Link - "Join Calvinist Batman as he brings on a guest each episode and talks about a different cultural and/or theological issue. "
This is my favorite bookish podcast for geeks who love Jesus, even if he doesn't know that Perelandra is the best book in CS Lewis's space trilogy.

Christ is the Cure Episode Link - "This podcast is dedicated to bringing back interest in Christian theology, and the application of said theology. I hope this show will be a resource for Christians in terms of discipleship, growth, apologetics, and general theology."
This podcast was a fun one, Martin Luther is more than a historical figure, he's an important theological figure. More than an important theological figure, Martin Luther is a example of a flawed person who God used anyway to change the world.

The Connect Cast - Episode Link - I don't actually have enough tattoos for this show, but they were cool and made an exception for me. (I'm working on having enough.) They have a great T-shirt "Thou shalt check thyself afore thine wreck thyself" which you need. Head to their site to .

Pink She Wolf - Episode Link - A podcast devoted to couples in business together and how they make it work - A more personal episode for me, my wife and I had a great conversation talking about what fills up our time.
I don't often dive very deep on my personal life. Partly, it's my nature, partly I think what I make is more interesting than the fact that I made it and partly because I'm a foster parent and there is stuff I've agreed to not talk about. My wife is light and joy, and I'm working on my bucket list goal of being the man in black.

Geekly Planet - Episode Link - "The Geekly Planet talks about all of the news that happens within the geek /comic book and movie world."
A little divergence from the usual, I love comic books. So Matthew, Pat and I get meta about why comic books are great. I'm nerdy, so this gets college level philosophical and gives you the vocabulary to convert the non-believers in your life because comics are important.

Of Course DC’s Jesus Comic Book Is Canceled
(Originally published on Medium.)

The Huffington Post reported that DC comics is giving up on their new comic book series about Jesus.
No surprise.
The premise is that Jesus has returned to Earth for a 2nd time (His first appearance was so awful they literally crucified him) because He’s hoping to learn from Sun Man, whom people have started worshipping. The series is meant to be a modern day cultural commentary.
Here’s Why the Whole Thing Was Doomed From The Start
For conservative Christian the mainstream messing with Jesus is analogous to conservative Christians telling the LGBTQA+ community they can cure homosexuality. One side feels like they are trying begin intelligent discourse and the other side feels like one of their core beliefs is being attacked by a vindictive psychopath. For conservative Christians it’s attacking part of their identity, part of the sacred.
Can you make a commentary on Christianity, or the Bible, or Christian culture? Yep. Honestly, Christian culture could use a little commentary.* However, if want to preach to more than just the choir, think harder about how you go about it.** For instance, don’t have the premise be God failed. It’s kind of a non-starter for people who think God is perfect.
Regardless of the Group, If You Want to Begin Intelligent Discourse
- Everyone, everywhere protects their core beliefs (identity). Especially from strangers, jerk bloggers, comic book writers etc.
- Don’t attack their core beliefs at the get go.
- If you want to attack a core belief, start with questions about the core belief. (Not the same thing.)
- If you want to question their core belief and discuss it, you’ll need to earn that trust.
- To earn trust, consider caring about their viewpoint.
DC’s Lucifer Comic Is a Good Example of Commentary That worked

(From https://www.dccomics.com/characters/l...)
Not a comic looking to be “Biblical.” Lots of discussion about who God is, what being all-knowing is like, the true meaning of independence but through the lens of someone not sacred, the devil. Satan is not someone conservative Christians hold dear. (Seriously, fuck that guy.) This gives space to explore and ask direct*** and indirect questions.
Even If You Think What I Think Is Dumb, People Are Still fragile
So handle with care, if you aren’t going to consider their beliefs and feelings, do you really think they are going to consider yours?
*This is coming from someone who would describe themselves as a conservative Christian.
**If your goal is to make a commentary about Christians to discuss with other non-Christians, I have no advice for you.
***To the conservative Christians reading this who think people can’t directly question what you believe, what are you afraid of?
****Ended with a Bible verse, you’re welcome.

Join me at The Jet City Comic Show
On November 3rd and 4th we'll be at the Jet City Comic Show in tacoma. We'll have a spot in artist alley and the whole team is excited.
On the 3rd I'll be hosting a discussion, From Boring to Captivating: The Power of Comics. If you'd like to talk about comics, meta, life with some other uncommon geeks, then I'll hope you'll join me.
Description: Let’s face it, there is a lot of boring stuff out there: long emails from your boss, certain subjects in school and vacuum instruction manuals. However, if you added a few comic book panels, it would be a completely different experience. Join Josh Hamon, the author of The Real Martin Luther for a fun discussion about the power of comics to transform even the most mundane of subjects. If you loved Understanding Comics, then let’s explore how we can apply comic principals to our life and work.
Details: November 3rd, 3p in room 405 at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. Tickets required, cosplay option (but encouraged).
For those who can't come, I'd love to hear your thoughts, where have comics and the stuff of comics found there way into your life and how have they made it better? Or failed trying?

Looking for a Podcast?
Hi,
Welcome to my corner of goodreads, if you're looking for a way to hear a little more about me or my book The Real Martin Luther, here are a few podcasts you can checkout:
The B.A.R. Podcast - Bible And Reformed, where you can hear everything from Ligonier ministries, to front line hip hop artists. They've got some sweet gear. (You can search for Martin Luther, or click here)
Dead Men Podcast - "We are spirit led & truth checked." This podcast is an extension of a growing community looking to serve. (Episode 16)
The Pastor Dad Podcast - "Because dads are called to be more than just babysitters." You might think of Martin Luther's legacy as just 'church splitter' or 'restorer of historical christianity' or 'anti-semite' but there are some amazing things every parent can take away from the life of Martin Luther. (Episode 9)
The Dirty Christian - "Probably an Offensive Christian Podcast" Honest about the good and bad, so a holy misfit will feel right at home. (Episode 116)
As an author, I'm always looking for places to share about life, talk about the book and meet interesting people. Have a podcast? Know a good podcast? Please reach out.
