I was the age when other kids were scrawling the names of their crushes with similar intensity, but there I was in English class willing a better future forward with all my might. Maybe this was my origin as a writer of optimistic science fiction.

With a lot of the same ideas and themes, this is a condensed, stand-a-alone version of Dinniman's eight-book long (and going) wild and silly Dungeon Crawler Carl series. But way less gonzo. It reads like the version being written to "be published" ve ...more

Leonora Carrington
“Military people never seem to apologize for killing each other yet novelists feel ashamed for writing some nice inert paper book that is not certain to be read by anybody.”
Leonora Carrington, The Hearing Trumpet

Norton Juster
“As the cheering continued, Rhyme leaned forward and touched Milo gently on the shoulder.
"They're cheering for you," she said with a smile.
"But I could never have done it," he objected, "without everyone else's help."
"That may be true," said Reason gravely, "but you had the courage to try; and what you can do is often simply a matter of what you *will* do."
"That's why," said Azaz, "there was one very important thing about your quest that we couldn't discuss until you returned.
"I remember," said Milo eagerly. "Tell me now."
"It was impossible," said the king, looking at the Mathemagician.
"Completely impossible," said the Mathemagician, looking at the king.
"Do you mean----" said the bug, who suddenly felt a bit faint.
"Yes, indeed," they repeated together; "but if we'd told you then, you might not have gone---and, as you've discovered, so many things are possible just as long as you don't know they're impossible."
And for the remainder of the ride Milo didn't utter a sound.”
Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

Margaret Atwood
“Without the light, no chance; without the dark, no dance.”
Margaret Atwood, The Year of the Flood

Carol Emshwiller
“She makes a silent vow to be a vegetarian from now on even if she has to starve to do it. Better that than even the remote possibility of eating one's friends and fellow sufferers.”
Carol Emshwiller, Carmen Dog

Carol Emshwiller
“May we all soon go about as our real selves and take joy in it, saying, yes, yes, to whatever we are.”
Carol Emshwiller, Carmen Dog
