I found it particularly hard to say goodbye to Vivian and Gil, the protagonists in my latest novel 'Left and Leaving' and, rather than start writing another book immediately, a short story or two seemed a good idea.
Short story writing demands a very different approach to character and narrative and that's been both refreshing and stimulating.

'Who's Left and Who's Leaving' is a wonderful song by a Canadian band called The Weakerthans. I love the lyric and the ambiguity of the title. I also thought it would be interesting to write about a father-daughter relationship which breaks the 'daddy's little girl' stereotype. Vivian Carey dislikes - even hates - her father. Not for anything he did but simply for being old.
That's pretty much all I had when I began writing but various other characters pushed their way in and started telling me what they wanted to do and two years later I had a first draft. (less)
