Writing is like exercise; the more you do it the better you get. Walk away for a while, get out of the habit, and it's much harder to restart and rebuild that muscle memory.

Years ago, when reading his novel "The Given Day," I was struck by his portrayal of Babe Ruth, who's a character in the story. This was young, vibrant Babe Ruth; not the older, stove-bellied, pigeon-toed figure we've all seen in jerky newsreels. The novel was set in Boston in 1919, and also featured Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge. It included references to the Spanish Flu as well, which caught my attention because my great-grandfather died in that epidemic.

How was it, I wondered, that the Red Sox played a World Series in the middle of that health crisis? Why were big crowds allowed to gather at the exact moment when being near other people meant being exposed to a deadly disease?

The more I looked into 1918 Boston, the more I discovered the remarkable confluence of events that all took place that September, and I was hooked.
