Colorado Sky
Hello, Goodreads friends!
On the 3rd of every month for the next year or so, I will post something about my upcoming book, ALL THE IMPOSSIBLE THINGS. These will be personal posts—glimpses into the little pieces of my heart scattered throughout its pages. There will also be giveaways, because obviously. (On Instagram only, I'm afraid!)
Today, my heart is in the sky.
Colorado is a beautiful state. The mountains, the forests, the wide, sweeping plains. It is a dream-setting for any writer. But one of my favorite things about Colorado is its sky.
I didn’t always know that Colorado’s sky was special. I grew up under it, observing the expanse of bright blue, the drama of the clouds, the thrill of gathering rainstorms and dry lightning. When I went to college out of state, I realized that not every place is as blessed with sky as Colorado. The sky seems…smaller, somehow, in other places. Less wrought with emotion and beauty. It took leaving Colorado for me to understand just how much I loved its sky. And so, its no surprise that Colorado’s melodramatic sky found its way into my writing.
In my book, my main character, Red, has a unique relationship with the sky. It reflects her emotional journey in many ways—through storms and the sudden stacking of sinister thunderheads. Bright tongues of fuchsia and gold clouds at sunset, and the deep breath of wide, open blue space.
The sky is a promise of things to come for Red. It is beauty and fear, hope and despair. “And yet,” as Anne Frank once said so poignantly, “when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.”
