I recently read about a neat idea for kids to get some practice panning for gold. Find some small rocks, paint them gold with folk art paint, and then hide them in a sandbox or at the beach. With your friends and siblings, use sifters and colanders to try to pan for the gold nuggets. Have a contest to see who can find more. Look up the cost of gold online and try to estimate how much your treasure is worth.
