A lover of fiction, both in writing and reading, Jayanthi Sankar enjoys expanding the scope of her creative space. While living in her fictional world most of the time, she interacts with the characters as they form and shape. So, naturally, writing a novel is more of lively process she truly loves and she’s all into experimenting, especially in her storytelling.
Tabula Rasa her third book, and the second novel was a 2022 NYC Big Book Award ‘Distinguished Favourite’ in the category of Historical Fiction and an ‘honourable mention’ in San Francisco book fest award 2022. This is almost a non-fiction book sprinkled with tiny personal stories. The ‘In the ring with life’ by Shashikala Shanmugasundaram is a collection of personal essays that are unique. The tagline - taking the punches and winning the game says it all. This is almost a non-fiction book sprinkled with tiny personal stories. The way the debutant author compares life, and its punches to the punches in the boxing ring by itself, attracted me the most. And to know that boxing is one activity she has tried sounded even more interesting to me. Karma Kurrency-K2 is a cute way of referring to earning good karma in our lives. The author comes up with a list of doable charities that need not involve money. Chapter 8 and the first chapter resonated every bit with my thought processes.

Although I have never rated myself with scores. And yes, I did not even think of calculating the author’s scores and I was not at all surprised by that because I have always leaned towards abnormality. Jokes aside, I loved the way she has divided the first chapter, composing the important parts of what success really is, or can be. Everyone would have thought along these lines, but when we read her chapter, we sure get a clarity on how she has simplified them. And also how successful her life has been. That really inspires me immensely because if I were to sit and seriously think about rating myself in every area, I would not even score half of her, but that’s the way we all are. Aren’t we? Different from each other and yet a little similar in miniscule bits. The author, an NUS gold medallist in masters, associates ‘setting goals’ to ‘forming a purpose’ that can lead to success and hence happiness in one's life, in the second chapter. One of the best takeaways for me is the cute - ‘knock that t’. And I loved knowing how organised she is, more because I am nearly disorganised. It feels so heartening to meet someone so meticulously organised.

The third chapter about the author's daughter's arrival on earth reads like a story. Chapters on parenting, 'woman in a man's world' set us to think deeper. And ‘from SVP to nobody - the COVID-19 saga' has not only brought out this book, but it is the most important chapter that can really reach anyone around the world in current times. The last chapter of Embut to Nithya, though a sad story, is also inspiring to all of us who whine and grumble about the slightest of our challenges. I hope at least in 2022, I will try to create a ‘goal book’ I’ve never tried in my life and I wish to begin life anew and if you read this book, you will most probably feel the same way.
