During medical school, I had a tough experience on a rotation and while I was reflecting on it, Nandini's voice came into my mind. I wrote four pages right away that ended up in the middle of the final draft of the book. She taught me how to learn from a character and trust them. (less)

First, I’d recommend reading as much as possible. Read fiction, nonfiction, essays, poetry, whatever you can. Read things that you enjoy and things that you dislike. Pick them apart and see what works, what doesn’t, and why. I’d also encourage writers to take time with their story and see what feels right.
Lastly, and this is more of a reminder, I want to emphasize to allow things to take longer than you may have envisioned. This process is about learning, patience, and persistence. It’s not worth rushing to submit a manuscript that isn’t ready. Sit with your work, process it, and take some time away from it. Find readers you trust and who can tell you where it needs work.

I cannot believe this is a debut. Morgan Radford explores a part of history I've never read in fiction. Many times, when authors weave history into novels, it can deter from the central story. Not here. Radford gives readers a rare blend of adventure ...more

“For years, we assumed ambition was a curse for us. Men could always wear it like a cape, while women were forced to tuck and hold it inside themselves.”
Saumya Dave, Well-Behaved Indian Women

“friendship has little to do with how long you’ve known someone and everything to do with faith. The faith that you can expose your rawest thoughts and still be accepted.”
Saumya Dave, Well-Behaved Indian Women

“By visiting their pasts, they were able to pave different futures together. She used to fantasize about what it would be like to have simple ties to her family tree instead of the twisted branches that are in theirs. But she knows now tat she wouldn't want to be any other way. They still aren't always in perfect harmony with one another, but maybe that isn't the point. Maybe being whole and authentic with the people you love is the real victory.”
Saumya Dave, What a Happy Family

Topics Mentioning This Author

“I never desire to converse with a man who has written more than he has read.”
Samuel Johnson, Johnsonian Miscellanies - Vol II

“Well, it seems to me that the best relationships - the ones that last - are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is... suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”
Gillian Anderson

“For once, I'll be proud to be in the shadows.”
Lydia Kang, Control

“I want to say somewhere: I've tried to be forgiving. And yet. There were times in my life, whole years, when anger got the better of me. Ugliness turned me inside out. There was a certain satisfaction in bitterness. I courted it. It was standing outside, and I invited it in.”
Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

“Loneliness: there is no organ that can take it all.”
