Three things:

1. Write! Don't be an "aspiring" writer. Aspire to be a professional. All you have to do to be a writer is write. It's the professional part of the equation that's difficult. Writing should happen often enough to be second nature. Let the words flow, regularly and often. Don't wait for your muse. Muses are fickle and unprofessional. It doesn't matter if what you write on a given day is never read. Just write. Habits, both good and bad, are formed by regular practice. So get writing!

2. Read! No one ever became a good writer without being an avid reader. If you don't like to read, then writing isn't for you. Don't kid yourself. And don't just read within your comfort zone. There are amazing writers out there doing amazing work in all sorts of areas. At least once in a while, pick up something you wouldn't normally read and read it. You'll be surprised where you find inspiration and guidance in how to be a good writer. Also read what other writers write about writing (like you're doing right now).

3. Develop professionalism. Remember that point about professionalism in point one? Yeah, this can be tough. When I say "professionalism," I'm speaking about a number of things.

Writing is a job. You need a schedule. You need to make and meet levels of productivity. You'll need to be able to meet deadlines. If you can't, then you need to be upfront and honest about it, and do so as soon as you realize you can't hit your goal. Don't wait to the last minute. Be up front about it.

You need to be able to interact with people on a professional level concerning your writing--everyone from fans, to editors, to agents, to publishers--which means being courteous, punctual, and reasonable. You don't have to agree with everyone about everything, but you do need to disagree professionally. The easiest way to make yourself a pariah is to be a difficult person. No one likes to work with a person that makes work a hassle. No one is an admiring fan of someone who treats them poorly. Be courteous. Be friendly (or at least polite). You don't need to take abuse, but don't dish it out either.(less)

I find mythology, folklore, and local legends to be great sources of inspiration, especially if I can put my own personal twist on things. Often I'll do some internet research before I start writing, even if I'm fairly confident in my knowledge of a particular subject. You never know how far down the rabbit hole you'll go before you find something new and unexpected.

I also find that the natural world can provide a lot of inspiration. I'm always coming across articles about some bizarre species of insect, fish, or fungus and thinking to myself "I can turn that into one hell of a nasty monster!"

People are another great inspiration. I people watch, quietly observing the people around me. Often I'll find a particular personality that I find striking, and will draw on that later when developing characters.(less)
