The author draws an intriguing picture of life in the expat community of Thailand. Engaging characters, a great story, and a surprising degree of human warmth for a book about skulduggery and dangerous encounters. Very entertaining, and I’m starting straight into the next in the series.

Very entertaining- will read whole series! Characters are particularly intriguing. Great description of Bangkok. Strongly recommended. Finished in less than one week.

THE MEATBALL DESANTIS REIGN OF TERROR MAY BE COMING TO AN END

Floridians have been “woken” by seeing how the rest of America-specifically, the far-right GOP-is rejecting Meatball even more than they reject liberal Democrats!Meatball is term-limited, meaning on January 1, 2027, he’s out on his rather spacious rear end. He won a squeaker in 2018, acted as if he’d won by a landslide, which he could do because of the huge edge the GOP had in the state legislature and the total hold on the Florida Supreme Court. Meatball’s crazy anti-vaxx and COVID denialism stood him well politically when Floridians wanted schools and workplaces opened, even if it wasn’t safe.Then he really went off the rails, trying to hurt Disney and Anheuser Busch, the two largest private employers in the state. He followed this up with attacks on drag shows, then book banning, then destroying higher education and secondary as well, and now he is talking about firing missiles into Mexico. Did I mention he illegally had Black congressional districts vacated (restored by the courts) and is spreading horrific antisemitic tropes well embracing Nazis? The man is crazy, and it’s plain for all to see. He has achieved the remarkable feat of being too extreme and crazy for MAGA World.Republican politicians, watching Meatball crater nationally, understand he is cratering at home also, and they don’t want to be dragged down to defeat by his lunacy. Every seat in the Florida House and half the state Senate is up for grabs next year.The Republicans saw how they lost the long-held mayoralty of Jacksonville six months after Meatball carried the same area by eleven points. If more Democrats are elected next year, and more Republicans seeing how Meatball has flamed out, there’s hope for some compromise and attention to the real issues facing Floridians: we lead the nation in inflation, violent crime, and insurance premiums unaffordable to so many Floridians. Meatball’s rants about transgenders, vaccination, and his extreme homophobia, antisemitism and racism have turned off enough Floridians so there’s hope for change. I ALWAYS KNEW RAND PAUL WAS WEIRD, BUT I DIDN’T KNOW THE WEIRDNESS EXTENDED TO UNDERAGE GIRLS
Senator Rand Paul was always a weird guy, but likably weird. This was especially true way back when he was a libertarian who joined with progressive Democrats to oppose reckless foreign intervention, the war on drugs, harsh criminal penalties that fell unfairly on minorities, and he was a voice against racism. When on the same side, it was even possible to temporarily forget that his myopic views of law and history caused him to oppose the minimum wage, most civil rights laws, any gun controls, and that the idea of government helping those in need was an anathema to him. But progressives figured we work with those who share our views on a particular issue whenever possible.
That was then and this is now.
Senator Paul is now a full-blown MAGA Trumpie who has abandoned any pretense that he supports things like voting rights, peaceful transition of power, adherence to the Constitution.
His latest evolution as a MAGA nut has him running ads in his home state of Kentucky, featuring Democratic Governor Andy Beshear’s ten year old daughter.

Kind of weird, and Paul has no valid explanation.
How did this happen? I believe it was after Paul ran for President in 2016, on his long-held views, and the Republican Party Establishment beat him down, determined not to have a non-interventionist, non-racist libertarian take control of the party, not when they had a great leader like Donald J. Trump.
I believe after that, Paul decided “if you can’t beat ’em, join, ’em” and throw his principles overboard and embraced Trumpist fascism.
Oh, by the way, did I mention that this former Ayn Rand acolyte, who embraced her atheism, now claims to be a devout Christian? I did’t say it, but somehow I think you figured that out already.

That’s your author above. I am much better looking than Rand Paul, I know the Constitution and American history infinitely better than he, and I stick with what I believe and don’t change just because I was on on the losing side.
But I cheerfully admit that while as a lawyer, I know the Constitution far better than he, Rand Paul is a much better ophthalmologist than I am.
