Richard C. Trice was born in Abilene, Texas, 60-something years ago, 38 of which he spent in the banking/ investment worlds before retiring to pursue a lifelong love of writing, music, acting, and world-wide travel.

His many other loves and interests include family, guitars, motorcycles, photography, history, the outdoors, good books, good movies, other people’s pets, other people’s points of view, other people’s good wine, an occasional cheap cigar, the indiscriminate splashing about of commas, and run-on sentences.

Trice and his wonderful wife of 40 years live in a rambling 135-year-old Victorian house in Northern New Mexico where he writes songs, terrible poetry, and, of course, novels.

If nothing was accomplished but staring at the computer screen, then tough. Do it again tomorrow, and the next day. If nothing at all is coming, I will get up, jump on my motorcycle, and ride through the countryside and mountains where I live, and where most of my stories are set. I'll take a camera and stop and photograph whatever looks interesting...an old building, an desolate road, landscapes, anything I can use later when I am trying to picture a location for a scene in my mind. I also dream a lot. I dreamed the surprise ending in ACT OF CONTRITION, getting up in the middle of the night and jotting down the details. When I had that, the book starting writing itself (almost), because I knew I had to get to that particular ending. (less)

The therapy.
If you do it honestly, you have to give yourself permission to dig up all the emotional baggage you've been carrying around forever, and then swallow hard and use it in your writing. My best characters have a lot of my own angst and wounds in them. (less)

Another Year in the Bag

Every January, I feel like a marathon runner (I wish!) who started out the race this time last year, paced himself into spring, sprinted around the corner into summer, stumbled and lost a couple of positions in the fall, and by the time winter reared its ugly head, was gasping and clawing his way to the finish line (with the obligatory stops to graze festively during Thanksgiving and Christmas).
