As a 33yr veteran teacher in Tucson, Arizona I wield books as weapons in a war on drugs, teen pregnancy and the pervasive disease of apathy coursing its leaden path through my students’ neighborhoods. I battle against predetermined trajectories of children who believe they are less-than in a country oozing with indifference in an educational system entrenched in blatant disregard.

I use books as though they are EpiPens and every student who walks into my room has a mouth full of shrimp. The more books I can get inside of a student the more apt they are to fight their own food stamp futures and caution tape destinies.

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
