Paul Smith Rivas is the founder of SMITH RIVAS Study Skills & Academic Coaching, where he teaches study skills and time management that help students earn better grades in less time. He specializes in students whose grades don’t reflect how smart they are, athletes, and STEM superstars.

Prior to discovering study skills, he studied literature in Mexico City, backpacked from Spain to Syria via Morocco and Wales, performed stand-up comedy in Spanish in Buenos Aires, and traveled from Argentina to the United States by bus.

Rivas has a BA in Mathematics, Sociology, and Spanish from UCSB, and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from The New School.

Prior to writi…moreI honestly don't recall ever having writer's block, in the sense that I've never wanted to be writing and found myself unable to do so. Prior to writing This Book Will Not Be on the Test, I had a period of several years from 2011-2017 where I wrote almost nothing, and basically only wrote what I was asked and paid to write, but that was because I didn't feel like writing because I was focusing on other things, like doing two community radio shows, dealing with challenging personal circumstances, and starting my study skills business in DC. However, I think writer's block is probably a form of procrastination, and in my experience as a study skills instructor, procrastination usually comes when the items on your to-do list are too big. If you're experiencing writer's block, it's probably because you're trying to write something too big. Break down what you want to write into small enough chunks so that writing one of them sounds fun and easy.(less)
