Joshua Rivoli lives in Baltimore County, Maryland after moving from upstate New York in 2006. He is the author of "Gods and the Dust: Greek Mythology as a High Fantasy Epic" and "The Thing in the Ring". The other is when the writer has something to write but the words won’t flow.
When I don’t know what to write about, I usually do a lot reading and other unrelated projects (like housework), all the while hoping that an idea comes to me. I find it best to read a wide variety of books including some that I might not normally consider.
When I'm in the middle of writing a story but the words won’t flow, I do one of several things. I might take a break from writing for a day or two because the problem could be that I’m burnt out. Other times I will seriously re-examine the scene I’m struggling with, to see if there is an underlying problem that is preventing me from writing it well. There is also the option of just pushing through writer’s block, to get something down that can be revised and improved later. (less)
