Some years ago I attended a free lecture at the park and was astonished to learn that the park’s creator, Charles Hamilton, was a frustrated artist who had neither the land nor the money to create the garden. Instead he borrowed the finance and bought over a 100 acres of scrubland and set about achieving his vision of a three dimensional work of art. This vision became an obsession that almost bankrupted Hamilton and ultimately he was forced to sell his beloved garden. Researching further, I discovered that there is a big mystery around Hamilton’s first wife (he had three). She has disappeared from all historical records. This real-life mystery inspired me to write a psychological thriller - imagining the life and death of Hamilton’s first wife played out against the fantastical setting of the garden. To give a modern perspective to the story, I created a young female researcher who, while recovering from a vicious physical attack, becomes obsessed with uncovering how the mysterious Mrs Hamilton died. Pains Hill is a thriller about obsession, love, creation and myth.(less)

The Silent Gondoliers by William Goldman
“By day it is filled with boat traffic - water
buses, delivery boats, gondolas - if something floats
and it's in Venice, it moves along the Grand Canal.
And by daylight it is one of the glories of the Earth.
But at night, especially when the moon is full
and the soft illumination reflects off the water and
onto the palaces - I don't know how to describe
it so I won't, but if you died and in your will you
asked for your ashes to be spread gently on the
Grand Canal at midnight with a full moon,
everyone would know this about you - you loved and understood beauty.”

“Sometimes there is a summer evening so perfect the very air seems charged with magic. In England, such evenings are not only rare, they are intensely brittle.”
