Joking aside, my advice would be: only do this if it's something you truly, truly love. If you don't get a zing! of joy every time you write a great action scene or some really fun banter, find something that does give you that zing of joy. Writing is hard--it's solitary, you're never as good at as you'd like to be and the amount of competition for readers' eyes is astronomical. But the pleasure you get from creating a character who walks off the page and comes to life, or a twisty plot that defies people to figure out what's coming next is something that doesn't depend on readership or return-on-investment. It's a thrill no one can plagiarize.(less)

The Demon Always Wins got its start, like so many other paranormal romances of the past dozen years, after I read Twilight. I loved the emotional intensity of that book, which I think was due primarily to the fact that being with Edward put Bella in jeopardy of being killed. I wanted to write something that would reproduce that emotional intensity without simply duplicating the story. I spent a few days obsessing about what constituted similar stakes and came up with "losing your soul."

About that same time, my minister preached a sermon on the Book of Job. He said after the wager between God and Satan ended, God replaced Job's children, and Job was happy as a clam with that arrangement. And I thought, "Kids aren't puppies. If Job had been a woman, she would never have accepted replacement children." Enter Dara Strong, a woman who, as the book opens, has lost almost everything—parents, husband, her unborn child—but is still fighting the good fight. Then, on top of all the crap she's already endured, she becomes the pawn in a cosmic wager. And she's subjected to a focused seduction by a being with the beauty of an angel and the allure of the baddest of all bad boys. What woman could resist that?
