Writing Prompt
For more sneak peeks, check out the Star Belt Press Instagram page. Each of the special guests for the book launch have a writing prompt inspired by their words, their work, or their life, and each will be revealed as they’re introduced over the next two months.
Pre-orders are now available for Write Some Cool Sh!t! Woo hoo!

Anyone who pre-orders Write Some Cool Sh!t before November 29 will be invited to an exclusive writing workshop reserved for my paid Substack subscribers (You have to email me with your receipt). This FREE workshop on December 14 at 8 PM ET will focus on the art of REVISION.
When I was first starting out in writing, an editor who was going through my travel memoir manuscript used the phrase “show don’t tell” a lot, highlighting swaths of text, and labeling it with “show don’t tell”, “show don’t tell”, “show don’t tell”. And I was sitting there on my side of the screen, biting my nails and binge eating Cheez-its crying “BUT HOW?!?!?!?”
Well, after years of teachers and craft books and workshops and peer reviews and becoming an editor myself, I will endeavor to SHOW you how.
Send your pre-order receipt over to me, and I’ll send you a link to register for the workshop. It will be recorded, so if you can’t make it live, you can check it out when you feel like it.

American Values: A Burning Haibun
I wrote this poem many years ago about the collective trauma of gun violence in the United States. I've never been able to get it published anywhere, so I'm self-publishing it now.
"No one else lives in an exposed wound just waiting for the next infection."

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter September 2025

September means back-to-school for a lot of folks including **drum roll**… me! Yes, I’ve gone back to school again. Working from the bottom up, I’ve gone back to school for creative writing, completing undergraduate courses before applying for my MFA (again).
Wish me luck!
Audacious Writers 60-Day Write-On Challenge
This year is the second year Camari Carter Hawkins is organizing the 60-Day Write-On Challenge.
The challenge encourages participants to
1. Write something new each day
2. Read 4 pages of a writing craft book each day
3. Share their work with others
4. Engage with other writers in the Audacious Writers Circle
I’m doing another attempt this year and will be using this handy-dandy tracking sheet to keep track of my progress. Feel free to copy it for yourself. If you’d like to participate in the challenge too, register here.
Speaking of challenges…
How’d you do on the Sealey Challenge this year?I created this handy-dandy bingo board for the Sealey Challenge this year, and completed 7 squares.

Only one person played along, so they were the sole winner of the advanced reader copy of my forthcoming book Write Some Cool Sh!t. Congratulations, Dr. Phelps!
Speaking of my forthcoming book…
Did you register for the book launch in November?
Some of my poet/artist friends will be sharing work they created inspired by a prompt in the book, and I’ll be doing the same! Register here!
Speaking of book launches…

Writing PromptYinka Shonibare is a disabled, British-Nigerian artist whose work spans paintings, sculptures, quilts, photography, filmography, ceramics, and even clothing and upholstery. When asked in an interview with Alain Elkann how he decides if an idea will become a work of art, he responded, “A project I just finished will usually create the next project... It’s almost like one project is giving birth. It’s the parent of another project with new ideas.”
Today, take a piece of your writing at random, then create a list of ideas for projects that could stem from it. How could this piece of writing serve as the “parent” for your next project?

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter August 2025

Happy Sealey Challenge Month to those who celebrate!

(Yes, this can be found in my forthcoming book of writing prompts, Write Some Cool Sh!t)
Today marks the beginning of the annual Sealey Challenge. Invented by poet Nicole Sealey, the challenge dares participants to read one poetry collection each day in the month of August. Try as I might, as of this writing, I have yet to complete this challenge. BUT! The beauty of challenges like this is even if I don’t complete the challenge 100%, I still reap the benefits of completing it 90% or 50% or even 10%. If I read one extra book that I wouldn’t have otherwise because of this challenge, that is still an overall positive.
Write about something you’ve been trying to do FoReVeR, but just can’t manage to cross the finish line. In which ways is the effort of trying still benefiting you even if you haven’t yet reached your goal?
Sealey Challenge Bingo Board + **GIVEAWAY**
I’ve created this nifty Sealey Challenge bingo card. If you read a book inspired by one of these bingo slots, post it to Instagram with the hashtag #AMWSealeyBingo, and I will enter you into a raffle to win an advanced reader copy of my forthcoming prompt book. Woot woot!
Also, if you need more books for your challenge, might you consider Survived By or Mother, (v)?
Book Cover RevealICYMI, I revealed the cover design for Write Some Cool Sh!t on social media :-) Pre-orders will start September 1, with the launch taking place on November 29.

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter July 2025

It is my birthday month, and there are lots of exciting projects on the horizon!
Thank you to my paid subscribers and JoP donors
At the end of June, I hosted a special workshop just for my paid subscribers and those who donated to The Joy of Poeting. I’m going to host another members-only workshop in December, and if you’d like an invite, become a paid subscriber today! Other perks include receiving feedback on one poem each month. Just email it to me and I provide thoughtful and thorough feedback.
Write Some Cool Sh!t
I’m excited to announce my writing prompt book, Write Some Cool Sh!t: 366 Prompts to Rekindle Your Creativity will be available November 29, 2025! My cover designer is hard at work putting together my vision, and I’ll be sharing that with you in my next newsletter! Exciting!
In the meantime, if you want to join the book launch in November, here is the link to to learn more and to register.
Writing Prompt SampleHave you been enjoying my writing prompts these last few years that I had a newsletter? I hope so because they’re in the book :-) That’s right, if you’re too eager to wait until November 29 to uncover some of the prompts found in the book, you can go back and look through my previous newsletters.
Here’s another one from my book:
Will Ferrell is known across the globe for his outlandish comedy acts starting most notably with the weekly comedy sketch show, Saturday Night Live. In 2024, he launched a documentary titled Will & Harper which followed him and his best friend as they traveled across the country together after Harper came out as a trans woman. At the end of the movie, the song “Will and Harper Go West” is performed by Kristen Wiig in which she sings, “A friend is a friend is a friend till the end.”
Write about a friend who has witnessed you in more than one chapter of your life. Who were you when you first met? Who were they? Who are you now? Who are they now? How can your friendship be described in terms of “there and then” and “here and now”?
Camp Write Start
My good poetry friend (along with Priscilla Thomas and Nikki Gray) is leading Camp Write Start, a four-week virtual writing retreat with “97 scheduled events designed to help writers build momentum, find community, and show up to the page—without perfectionism. With live co-writing sessions, creative prompts, gentle accountability, and a welcoming vibe, Camp offers meaningful structure for writers of all backgrounds, genres, and experience levels… Camp Write Start invites poets, novelists, essayists, hybrid writers, and anyone (including those who don’t quite feel ready to call themselves a writer just yet) looking to return to or deepen their creative practice. Passes range from $45 to $300. Join for a day, a week, or the full month.”
And because I’m her friend and you’re my friend, you can use the code CAMPFRIEND15 to save 15% on tuition when you register. Here are all the offerings included in the tuition:

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter June 2025

June is the month we celebrate Pride, Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the summer solstice. But did you know that June 14th is “Be Nice to Bugs Day”?

This month’s writing prompt is inspired by “Be Nice to Bugs Day.” Steven Kutcher worked in Hollywood for years as the go-to “Bug Man.” According to his website, “His knowledge of arachnids and their behavior led him to work with arthropods on over 80 feature films including Arachnophobia, Jurassic Park, and Spiderman.” When CGI started to replace him, he transferred his talents to the fine arts. He paints, but in a very unique way… using his bugs instead of brushes… He puts paint on the bottoms of their feet and lets them crawl around his canvas, creating a work of art from the patterns his bug pals leave behind.
For this prompt, write about bugs! Can you incorporate a trail of buggy footprints into your piece?
Mark Your Calendars: Upcoming Subscribers/ Donors-Only Workshop
At the end of June, I will be saying THANK YOU to all of my paid subscribers and those who have donated to The Joy of Poeting by hosting a Subscribers/Donors-Only writing workshop.
If you’re already a paid subscriber or have donated to The Joy of Poeting, you don’t have to do anything! You’re already in, and you’ll automatically receive a link to join this special event. This workshop will NOT be posted to YouTube. (If you want to double check if you’re on the list or not, send me a message through socials or my website).
If you want to be added to the guest list, you can become a paid subscriber, or register for any of the upcoming The Joy of Poeting sessions with a donation.
The Joy of Poeting Going on Hiatus For (At Least) the Summer
JOP fans, I am tired :-) And I have some big events happening this summer, so The Joy of Poeting Season 2 Finale will take place June 22.
I’m not sure what the future of The Joy of Poeting looks like. The rigidity of a weekly schedule isn’t working for me time and energy-wise. I’m thinking it’s going to be a bit sporadic and feature more special guests, but I’m not exactly sure yet. Maybe a once monthly episode + special guest episodes? I’m stilling pondering. If you have thoughts, feel free to leave a comment or send me a private message.

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter May 2025

What does May invoke for you? For me, it invokes mothers because of Mother’s Day. For some, Mother’s Day might be a joyous celebration of the divine feminine, for others it may be a dreadful reminder of loss, and still for others it might be a combination of the two. Thinking about mothers, a story about a man living with verbal dyspraxia came to mind.
Writing Prompt
Verbal dyspraxia is a condition caused by brain signals not communicating with the muscles responsible for speech. Someone with verbal dyspraxia can understand language but aren’t able to produce it themselves. Many people living with verbal dyspraxia rely on speech-producing devices to speak on their behalf. One man from the United Kingdom had a custom voice created for him from combining the voices of two other British men together so that his proxy voice no longer sounded like a mechanical robot. When he first received the new voice, his mother asked him to say “I love you, mum” over and over and over again. (If you’re interested, you can watch a short video from the BBC about it.)
Write about the voices that are important to you. If you could only hear each voice say one unique phrase, what would you want to hear each voice say?
My Coloring and Activity Book Is Coming Soon!
At the end of last year when my former classmate, Wasseem Emam, reached out to me asking if I wanted to write and design a coloring book for his nonprofit organization, Ethical Seafood Research, I was a little overwhelmed with being handed a carte blanche on its contents.
Being a storyteller, I came up with the idea of a preteen underwater guide, taking the reader along for an adventure, but also calling upon the reader for help occasionally along the way, like with building a warning sign via a connect-the-dots puzzle, creating a homey environment for shrimp through drawing, guiding a gray whale on its migration from the Arctic to Mexico in a maze puzzle, and more.

Wasseem also wanted this activity book to be something teachers would be able to use to create opportunities for ecology education in the classroom.

To do this, I created bonus materials at the back of the book for teachers and homeschooling parents. Three activities are designed for grades K-2 and three are designed for grades 3-5. (And I’ll be so interested to know if any teachers or families complete one or more of the activities!)
Wasseem also put me in charge of finding an illustrator. I mean, the quality of the illustrations would make or break this project, so pressure was on to find someone who could conjure my (sometimes overly) detailed directions of what I was hoping to see on the page.
After many interviews, I hired a friend of a friend, Nacho Garrido, and he used his talents to truly bring my visions to life. Every time I saw an email from Nacho in my inbox, I’d ignore everything else and open his first. It felt like opening a present each time I saw his interpretation of my requests. I mean, they were just so perfect.
I received my proof copy in the mail, and it will be going to print and officially be on the market soon!

I’ve been hard at work “increasing my internet presence,” and you can check out a few more podcasts that I appeared in that debuted last month.

I feel so lucky to have Martheaus Perkins joining The JoP on May 18th to demonstrate the triptych form. This is a separate event from the weekly JoP episodes, so pre-registration is needed. Register here

(P.S. peeps occasionally message me to complain that “ThE LiNk DoEsN’t WoRk”… y’all just gotta scroll down. I swear the link works :-) )
And we have two other exciting guests also appearing! James Coats on May 25 demonstrating his invented form the 4 Kings, and Ginger Ayla on June 1 demonstrating her invented form the centoum. Again, these are separate from the regular JoP sessions, so register here if you haven’t already!

An Open Letter to Redmond Sullivan
Dear Redmond (and all the Redmonds past, present, and future),
I see your sweet soul, your tender
heart, your arms outstretched,
open to your opponent,
asking if she is okay, checking
to see if
she’s hurt.
I see your softness, the softness
that one hateful person refused to see
even though it is so plain.
I know that it is easy for me
to say, Their hate has nothing to do with you,
when their hate is focused
on you
like a
laser’s
point.
But I must say it
anyway.
Their hate has nothing to do with you.
I know that you did not ask
for this attention.
I know you just want to live
and love
in peace.
Let me tell you, my sister,
I am kneeling
before you
in reverence
of your courage
in honor
of your beauty
in protest
to their protest.
Your candle has already lit mine,
and your flame has already traveled
from one wick to another.
We are not a forest fire, but a camp fire
welcoming you to sit, breathe,
warm the parts of you that have been chilled
by their thoughtlessness.
They cannot snuff out your light.
No matter how tall or wide
they try to build their fence,
truth always finds a way
of shining through.
There is an army
of love
standing with you.
Even when you cannot see us,
believe me, we are there.
Love,
Anne Marie Wells

April is National Poetry Month! Yahoo! It is my first poetry collection’s second birthday, and it is my son’s first birthday. A lot to celebrate <3

On April 30, 2023, my first poetry collection, Survived By: A Memoir in Verse + Other Poems, debuted. On the back cover I wrote “These lines helped me survive. Do what you need with them to survive too. Draw on these pages. Or tear them out. Carry a poem in your pocket. Or give it to someone else. Cross out my words and write your own. Make a collage. Use them as kindling. Just show me what you create.”
Today, take someone else’s writing and recreate it whether through erasure, or writing over the writer’s words with your own, or other means of transformation so that it serves your own creative eye.

Anne Marie Wells Writerly Newsletter March 2025

March is here, and soon the vernal equinox will push us officially into spring. I am hoping with it, we are pushed out of both the literal and metaphorical winter we’ve been experiencing.
Notice anything different?
This year, I’ll be celebrating two years of my monthly newsletter, and y’all have followed me from email to Medium to my website to Substack. THANK YOU for coming with me through this evolution of figuring out what this newsletter is.
Since the newsletter has never been exclusively about poetry—my writing prompts can transcend genre, the calls for submissions I apply to are not exclusively poetry, the workshops I facilitate are not exclusively poetry—I’ve made the switch from Poetry newsletter to Writerly newsletter. All the same great information with a title that won’t make writers of other genres feel unwelcome.
ICYMI: “Audiobook” version of Survived By now available on YouTubeLast month to honor my father on the fifth anniversary of his passing, I read the entirety of my book Survived By cover-to-cover live on YouTube. Not a single person joined for the viewing as I read for over two and a half hours, but that’s okay! This “audiobook” version of Survived By now exists — raw, unedited, and with added commentary. So if you haven’t read my book because you’re more of an audiobook person, or if costs have prohibited you from purchasing a copy, I invite you to listen to it the way you listen to audiobooks or podcasts as you’re commuting to work or while you’re folding laundry or cooking dinner.
Expert Panel on Following One’s HeartI recently appeared as a special guest on the Do the Thing Podcast with Stacey Lauren. I talked about my journey to Iceland finding people’s happy places and was joined by many other wonderful people with wonderful stories to share including my mentor Laura Carney who wrote My Father’s List about completing her father’s bucket list that she found a decade after he passed; Jeff Truesdale who is a life-long reporter/journalist and who is currently on a quest to travel to all the towns named Nelson after his husband Nelson died suddenly of a heart attack; Mary Latham who created the movement More Good Today and who traveled to all fifty states collecting stories of kindness to honor her late mother; and Shaun Zetlin who helps people heal emotional wounds through physical movement.
One-Year Book BirthdayHappy birthday to my chapbook, Mother, (v), [pronounced Mother comma verb] which won the 2023 Cinnamon Press Pamphlet Contest and was published on March 13, 2024.

Quite literally pregnant with longing and a desire to love, Mother, (v) is both a meditation on and plea for motherhood. It is raw, reflective, and as I read, I found myself reaching for my heart, as the lyrical and elemental poems grew on the page. Wells writes with authentic candor, inviting readers to sit alongside her vulnerability, disappointments, and heartbreaks. In doing so, anyone who reads Mother, (v) will feel seen and held on their motherhood journeys. - Krystle May Statler, author of Prayer for Relief
Writing Prompt
Déja vu is the phenomenon someone experiences when they feel like they have seen, heard, or otherwise already lived something occurring in present time. A lesser-known phenomenon jamais vu is a phenomenon someone experiences when they feel as if they are seeing something they have regularly seen for the first time.
Write about something you’re very familiar with as if you’re seeing it/experiencing it for the first time. If you were a stranger, how would you describe your living space? If you were a foreigner, how would you describe your town? How would you describe your partner, friend, or family member if you had never met them before today. Look at something with new eyes.
