Version 0.2 of The Ship of Theseus is now available.
Version 0.1 will never be able to be downloaded again.

Many have wondered how exactly these updates will function in practice. Just like the eponymous "Ship of Theseus" thought experiment, the versions are intended to be iterative: small updates that alter pieces of the novel without completely overhauling the framework all at once.

As such, this first update of the novel primarily acts as an experiment in form—how the reading experience can be shaped by different narrative formats and styles. Just as Pablo abandons his use of marble in v0.1 for the more mutable medium of clay, so too does this version explore a more versatile compositional approach to better bring the story elements to life. A biographical history of the protagonist and his works unfolds through academic, textbook-like excerpts; his disastrous gallery opening is told through the satirical prose of an art critic; a full-length play punctuates the low-point of his journey; and more . . .

Changes to the plot are precipitated by the introduction of a new character—the mysterious and alluring Faye—who materializes in this new reality from a dream of Pablo's in v0.1. While these story modifications at first appear to be minor, their ripple effects can be felt by the end of the novel and perhaps will echo through subsequent versions as time goes on.

This is just one small iteration in a series of many more to come. Whether you view every single update or periodically check in to see what has changed, I hope that you will continue with me on this journey.

The key to immortality is reinvention.

The first version of The Ship of Theseus was never meant to last. By the end of the year, the novel in its original form will no longer be available for download and anyone who has not yet added it to their Kindle library will never be able to read it.

In its place will be the book's next iteration, available in January 2026. Anyone who purchases it at this point will only be able to download v0.2 or later. However, those with the original version will have the option to keep what they have—or update it (at no cost) to the latest.

I will be counting down the days on my Facebook and X pages as the final date approaches. In the meantime, "Get it while supplies last."
