KELSO: Author’s Subject is notorious 1960s gang

Hattie Valdes, a friend and business associate of the Overton Gang,
ran a well-known brothel on South Congress Avenue at a roadside motel
called M&M Courts. Tim Overton’s favorite gal was the place’s star
attraction.

But we weren’t always this civilized, which you’ll discover when you read Jesse Sublett’s new book: “1960s Austin Gangsters: Organized Crime That Rocked the Capital.” Sublett tells us the harrowing story of the Overton Gang, a ragtag band of poor misfits who robbed small town banks, ran prostitution rings, hired crooked lawyers, were in cahoots with disreputable used car dealers, would knock your lights out and were tough to catch.

My Birds Are On the Road

Click the link at right to read the rest of the story.

January 2019 Texas Highways featured a personal essay of mine called A Cancer Survivor on the Healing Nature of Birds. It’s a personal essay about the history of my love of birds, which played a part in my survival from Stage 4 neck cancer 21 years ago, and figures prominently in my life today, since I am more fascinated by birds than ever, and this was the year that I got brave enough to try making pictures of them–hence the birds in my last art show, Birds, Bears & Bones, which enjoyed a successful run last December.

In case you missed my essay in the magazine, you can read it now by clicking A Cancer Survivor on the Healing Nature of Birds.

The magazine also commissioned an original painting from me to illustrate the story.

More Art in 2019

The scene at Yard Dog Dec. 1st, photo by Peter Blackstock ?

[NOTE: To see more art by Jesse Sublett, to inquire about prices and/or commissions, click @JesseSublett.visualart; or send us an email through the contact card at bottom of  page).

Our three-musician show at Yard Dog Gallery in December 2018 was a success and, more important, it was a whole lot of fun for a lot of people. The opening for Birds, Bears & Bones on December 1st drew a plus capacity crowd, and even better than the sheer numbers is the fact that we knew personally just about everyone who came. We saw fans of the Skunks & Standing Waves who had been with us since our first gigs at Raul’s Club.

Birds, Bears & Bones: ATX Musician Art

Jesse Sublett Austin author and seminal rock musician and visual artistCome celebrate new works by three seminal Austin musicians, Jesse Sublett, Jon Dee Graham, and Larry Seaman. Jesse and Jon Dee, as members of the Skunks, played Raul’s Club on the Drag along with Larry Seaman, a founding member of The Standing Waves.* All three are still producing musical art as well as visual art and are prime examples of the deep and varied talent pool that is Austin, Texas. “Birds, Bears, & Bones” consists of new works by the artists. An opening reception will be held at 7 PM December 1st and the exhibit will be up and online through December 28. Rumor has it that live music will be part of the festivities. [Yard Dog proprietor Randy Franklin was another member of that band].
