I sit down with a yellow legal pad, give myself a prompt and then go for at least 10 minutes, never taking my pen off the page. I try to find tangents and rabbit holes to explore that take me into new writing territory. I usually find some way back into my story when I give up trying so hard.(less)

Through writing, I figure out what I believe and what I hope for. My mind is naturally scattered and undisciplined, so writing is the only way I know how to tame it!(less)

How to Write About Dreams

How to Write About Dreams

We all like to talk about our dreams, but few people want to hear about them. Our own dreams are revelatory, scary, confusing, funny, and weird; other people’s dreams are just plain boring. That’s why so many writing teachers and editors warn us not to throw dreams into our stories if we want to keep our readers turning pages.

“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”
Julian of Norwich

Sylvia Plath
“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.”
Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

Dag Hammarskjöld
“You are not the oil, you are not the air—merely the point of combustion, the flash-point where the light is born. You are merely the lens in the beam. You can only receive, give, and possess the light as the lens does. If you seek yourself, you rob the lens of its transparency. You will know life and be acknowledged by it according to your degree of transparency—your capacity, that is, to vanish as an end and remain purely as a means.”
Dag Hammarskjöld, Markings: Spiritual Poems and Meditations

“Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road. ”
