My friend, the novelist Ernest Gaines would respond to that question, "Read, read, read. Write, write, write."

One time I was visiting with him and I suggested to him that he had left out, "Think, think, think."

If you don't already love to read, I can't imagine that you'd want to be a writer. And if you love to read, you already enjoy spending time alone, which means there's a good chance you already enjoy 'the internal conversation', i.e., thinking.

So the other one is just writing. Here I think of another of my friends, the author/cartoonist Kody Chamberlain. He spent several years at home, just drawing. Now he's a very successful artist, with several books to his credit.

And you have to just write, write, write: write a blog, write for other blogs, write emails, write letters to the editor, write short stories. The first stuff won't be as good as the later stuff, just write.

With time, your own style will emerge.(less)

Biomimicry & The Ideal Free Distribution

Biomimicry is a complicated attempt to arrive at simple, natural solutions that often result from the Ideal Free Distribution.
