Paul Perea was born in Corrales, New Mexico, and raised in Albuquerque. Regional folk stories, in particular the tale of La Llorona, were the inspiration for his novel.

When he’s not writing or getting into altercations at the local food co-op, Paul enjoys making playlists for his friends, cooking up New Mexican dishes for his spouse, and spoiling his cats.

The First Circle is his debut novel.

If I'm having a hard time connecting, I'll read what I've written. If that doesn't help, I'll take a break and leave it - not even think about it. If I overthink, it just serves to make me frustrated.

I also will go read a book, not necessarily in my genre, or watch a favorite movie. Talking it out with someone who can be objective helps, too. My spouse is my harshest critic and greatest supporter. I'm lucky. It's nice to get it out and then have an analytical conversation. You're so close to your story that, for lack of a better analogy, you can't see the forest for the trees. Talking about it, out loud, really does help. (less)

John Milton
“Wolves shall succeed for teachers, grievous wolves,
Who all the sacred mysteries of Heaven
To their own vile advantages shall turn
Of lucre and ambition, and the truth
With superstitions and traditions taint,
Left only in those written records pure,
Thought not but by the spirit understood.”
John Milton, Paradise Lost
