I did the same thing after the first time I went there. I came back and read his book of essays "Stand Still Like The Hummingbird" ....and disliked it.

I think his fiction is where it's at.

Regarding 24 City, devastating is the exact word I used as well! I'm still trying to figure out why that one walloped me far more than his others. Agree on the final part with the somewhat superficial girl---that was perhaps the climax for me. There was also a young fellow who didn't get much air time....came in later in the film....that really got to me as well, but since I can't think of his name, please ignore my blathering!

Is there any particular film of his that stands above the others for you?

24 City! Yeah, one of those "tear-inducers" for me, the film where his ideas finally clicked for me emotionally. I think Still Life would be a distant second for me. But 24 City...something about it....was devastating.

Yes, I'm leaving it be. It looks virtually the same. Now if it worked on a 10 scale, I might consider.....

I've been drinking a good deal of Fernet lately as well. It helps ease my anxiety over the poor performance of my Cardinals against the mediocre Giants these past couple of games. I've yet to puke it up, though.

Diggin' the Sebald pretty hard. The plan was to cruise through his oeuvre as quickly as possible, but I think I'm going to need a break after 'Saturn'.

I'd recommend getting yourself a bottle of Fernet Branca, or trying it at a bar, sometime very soon. You could probably score a bottle for less than $30. Just drink it straight on the rocks. There's nothing like it anywhere. It's mostly consumed as a digestif, after dinner, and is perfect for Fall.

Kirschwasser is similar in the way it is typically consumed. But it is a crisp and clear cherry brandy -- really quite delicious. A nice bottle of that will set you back a little more. But it is objectively enjoyable, in contrast to the Fernet.

The mix is not actually all that great. The recipe needs work.

1.5oz Fernet Branca
1.5oz Kirschwasser

Served on the rocks to be consumed quickly.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing to do with papaya is leave it where it fell. I really do not like the taste of it. But it's supposed to be really good for you. Do you have a juicer? I bet you could make a fairly palatable juice concoction with it -- maybe a smoothie/yogurty thing. I bet the yogurt would cut through the vomitty taste of the papaya.

I've decided to start my own tradition of making cocktails based on writers. The first one, tonight, was the Mario Vargas Llosa, which is a Lemoncello Margarita (with fresh squeezed limes and orange blossom water) mixed with Cava, chilled, and served in a martini glass with a dash of sea salt and a dash of habanero hot sauce.

Next week is the Cormac McCarthy.
