We were driving thr…moreA few years ago, I drove from Argentina to Brazil for vacation, and during our drive, there was an incredible butterfly migration. We were driving through what must have been millions of butterflies for 500 kilometers.

That sounds beautiful and the butterflies are, but when you're driving through them, there's a lot of dead butterfly bodies on the windshield. It's pretty intense and kind of awful, actually. They also smelled like fish in the heat of the car and the summer.

My story -- a YA sci fi where the main characters journey a similar route to the one we took -- starts there and takes place 10 thousand years in the future.(less)

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Leigh Shulman I don't believe in it. I do believe we get stuck, and often we're stuck because we're doing something we've never done before. So being stuck can actu…moreI don't believe in it. I do believe we get stuck, and often we're stuck because we're doing something we've never done before. So being stuck can actually be a sign of growth.

Freewriting is the most powerful tool I know to overcome stuckness. It requires patience and faith to use it, though.(less)
