William Michael Ried was born on Long Island, graduated from the University of Michigan and Georgetown University Law Center and practices law in New York City. His first novel Five Ferries was a finalist in the 2019 American Fiction Awards for Best New Fiction. In 2021 his second novel Backstory won the New York City Big Book Award for Mystery and a Silver Medal from the Wishing Shelf Book Awards for Adult Fiction, was a semi-finalist for the Kindle Book Award for Literary Fiction, and was named a 2022 Eric Hoffer Award Category Finalist. I arrived with two suitcases and two months later a friend offered to cart the rest of my stuff up from DC in his car. He parked on the street in Greenwich Village on Halloween night 1982. He brought inside my portable black & white TV so no one would steel it, but left other things in the car, including the cod box that held all my chapter drafts. In the morning my book was gone. My shock and the search of alleyways and dumpsters that followed might make a good start for a mystery...if there had been a happy ending. As it was I had to start over again years later and Five Ferries ended up taking 40 years to publish.(less)
