A British author of some 2 dozen books, half of which are crime novels, Russell is an ex-chairman of the Crime Writers Association. He has written several non-fiction works and half a dozen historical novels. I'm surprised anyone gives this less than 5 out of 5. It's beautifully told and, of course, redolent of a lost mid-twentieth century period when it wasn't unusual for older people on average or slightly above average means to retire to live in very ordinary hotels.
