Author of St. Martin's Press novels Campusland and The Sandersons Fail Manhattan, Johnston grew up in New York and went to Yale. From there, Wall Street (Salomon Brothers of Liar's Poker fame) and a stint in Hong Kong. On the side, he opened a couple of nightclubs in NYC. One, called the Baja, had a great run. After that, he started and ran a quant hedge fund for about a decade, taking some time to teach as an adjunct at Yale. Somewhere in there he penned a fun little book on golf betting games. Growing bored of finance, Johnston shifted gears to tech, co-founding two startups, later sold. He and his wife live in Charlottesville, Virginia. ...more

Fyi, St. Martin's just gave the green light to my second novel (working title: All the Lovely People). To answer your question, many of the scenes in Campusland were drawn directly from real life, and some of them I had to dial back for fear that no would would believe them, even in the form of a "satire." For instance, how many employees was I going to give Martika in her DEI department. I went on Ivy websites to see what the real numbers were, but they were unavailable (of course). So I went with 30, thinking, this is satire, I'm allowed to exaggerate. Somewhat later I found out the real number at Yale is 150! But even in a satire, people would say, "shut up, that's ridiculous." Anyway, the book is grounded in truth. I particular, I heavily researched Title 9. Hope that answers your question.(less)

Both were so absurd that I wondered why no one was using the modern campus as a satiric literary setting. I decided it was up to me. One of those incidents, where a college age girl accused me of patriarchy for holding a door for her, made it into Campusland. Now, I've decided I quite enjoy writing.(less)

For me, this book violates a lot of rules. For one, the reader should know, early on, why they're reading it. What's the central conflict? What's the mystery to be solved? This book really doesn't have a central conflict, and only the faintest of nar ...more
