Meet Kevin Allred: a writer, speaker, educator, and (sometimes) musician with a passion for the politics of pop culture (and particular love of Beyoncé). An unapologetic outlaw of academia, he believes knowledge should be accessible to everyone—not just gatekeepers of the Ivory Tower—and that education should always also be fun.

Kevin's mission is to facilitate conversations that highlight the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class through pop culture analysis and storytelling; conversations that expose, question, and disrupt America's racist and heterosexist status quo and confront participants' various complicities in those systems. He aims especially to create conversations across difference while demanding white people, like

I've got a lot of stories to tell that all revolve around the idea of unapologetically telling the truth despite intense backlash. And always in order to stand up for the most vulnerable people in society. From falling in love with Black feminist literature and music as a (white) kid and growing up queer in Mormon Utah, to traveling around the country as a singer/songwriter on the LGBTQ music scene, and finally becoming a Beyoncé professor who was reported to police, the FBI, the Secret Service, and ultimately fired for politicizing the classroom in the age of Trump. I was also inspired early on by Daphne Brooks 2006 review of Beyoncé's B'Day album for the Nation magazine. From there, I started teaching a course I called Politicizing Beyoncé in 2010 -- looking at Beyoncé's music alongside a longer Black feminist history that spans hundreds of years, with eager groups of students of all backgrounds. And for that reason, all the amazing work by Black women I've read over my life is the other biggest inspiration for the book. Ain't I A Diva? is the current version of my course in story-form! I wanted to offer the story of my class and what Beyoncé and Black feminism have meant to me and the students in classrooms across the U.S. in the hopes that others are inspired and motivated to push for positive change in the world. And hopefully have some fun while doing it! I explain so much more about the history of the course and my inspiration in the Introduction to the book too!(less)
