Born in the county of Kent, just south of London, M G Knight spent most of his childhood playing on disused landfill sites or in abandoned chalk pits. I know what you’re thinking – Yuk! And they did smell pretty gross sometimes, but If you’ve ever watched 1970’s Doctor Who or Blake’s Seven, then you’ll know that he spent his formative years on what looked like an alien world.

When not running about with toy laser blasters or playing on his Sinclair Spectrum 128 (PlusTwo – the plus two is very important!) he developed a love for writing. English not only the language he spoke but also one of his favourite lessons at school.

Finding that typing out amusing stories about an elf called Nobby during lessons, not only made his friends laugh but was also something he enjoyed. Even if Mr Maxwell didn’t appreciate it quite so much.

A pact with a pal called Kevin was soon formed. The pair of them would learn more of these versatile calculating engines at college and forge a career messing about on futuristic software that could even check your spelling a grammar. The duo would also make programs and command vast systems to do their bidding, while they sat with their feet up playing top trumps.

But alas, during the summer, Kevin decided to become an electrician ditching his friend entirely. Thirty years later, M G found himself leading in a technology business and not getting paid to write funny stories, as he’d hoped.

In between, there had been some semi-successful tries at being a writer, as a cupboard full of rejection (that’s a good book title) will attest. The closest thing to success came in the late 1990s with a brush with writing for a large national radio station, which almost came off. But not quite.

The love for futuristic fiction never went away, and in 2018 he decided to have another bash at making his dream real. Only now, he had three kids and a wife to inspire him. Which meant that turning the every day into the fantastic felt very easy. It also gave him something to do while bored in hotel rooms at night.

A long ruminating idea was chosen to be first onto the page. A tale about a young lad who wants to understand how Christmas eve could be possible without the use of magic began to form.

As he tapped away, M G realised what a powerful vehicle for inspiring the next generation of innovators to make better tomorrows, novels could be.

So he’s kept at it. And he’ll keep going. He loves his family, and now they have something to remember him by forever.

2021 Done? Already?
