I write for film and television with my brother, and once upon a time, we were applying for a lot of fellowships that ask that pesky question, "What makes your voice unique?" This question comes up a lot for writers, especially when you're breaking in. You're supposed to know what story you can tell that no one else can. Or what's so very, very special about the way you tell it. The trouble is that most of us know ourselves really well, so we don't feel like we're inherently unique or interesting. We don't know what's special about our voice because we hear that voice so much we just sort of tune it out after a while.

Anyway, I decided to share a few stories from my life on a blog just to see how they were received...to find out if I was as boring and common as I feared I was. The funny thing was, I did find out I was common, in a way, but that that's why people kept reading. They saw themselves in my stories. They found something to connect to or something that made them think about their own journey through young adulthood. And a few readers who are generous with their compliments told me they wish they'd had stories like these when they were finding themselves as twentysomethings.

To me, books serve two very important functions:

They teach us to empathize with others. And they reflect our own hearts back to us so we can be more accepting of ourselves.

The thought that my blog might kind of do a little bit of that second thing was enough motivation for me to keep a good thing going and write a book. So now here we are.(less)
