Why I do this
This may shock you, but when I was a teenager, I was moody, self absorbed, and generally thought mostly about sex, violence, and sugar.
I have a theory that I wasn't exactly a rare snowflake in an otherwise pristine landscape.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet that there are other teenagers who have followed, and who will continue to follow a similar template.
Now, somewhere around twenty five my brain fully developed and I started thinking that maybe, just maybe, my life purpose was to make the world better and not, as I had presumed, to have as much sex and sugar as I could handle.
I started reading self development books, and doing things for OTHER people.
Again, that is not a unique story.
So, I started thinking. What if we could shave off that timeline a little? What if we could increase the awesome in our world simply by getting these young 'uns interested in self development earlier on?
Turns out, that was ALSO not a unique idea.
When I graduated high school, my Mother gave me a book. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change - it sat on my bookshelf, gathering dust for years. In fact, it was so ignored, that I actually purchased the book later on in life, only to be surprised to find it already in my collection. (Dusting, it seems, was another skill I'd yet to acquire)
So, did I learn from this? Nope!
I applied the exact same strategy as my mother, with perhaps a slight tweak. I (a totally cool dude) would write the self development books for teens and young adults! I'd get through to the lil' rascals with their twitters and whoozits.
And then... I remembered the dusty books on my bookshelf.
The books had been fine.
I had just never opened them.
The problem was never how well the self development books were written.
The problem was that they were self development books.
So, I started thinking: Could I write a book that had sex and violence in it that would give teens the tools of self improvement?
Could I wrap mindset in entertainment?
Is "Mindsettertainment" possible?
Turns out, yeah. Yeah it is.
And thus, Awakening: The Shard Chronicles Book 1 was born with many, many more to come.
