J. Crew Factory: I swear that Factory is the best-kept secret on the internet – they’re offering 50-70% off everything (!!!). This belt is less than half the price of Em’s Madewell equivalent; there’s a near-endless selection of sub-$40 skirts that channel 2009 J. Crew. Don’t miss this one!

Lululemon: Score over 50% off (!!!) some favorite styles, like these $49 high-rise leggings or this throw-and-go oversized hoodie, perfect for tossing on after yoga. (This is the best Lululemon deal I’ve seen in the six years I’ve been pulling this guide together – don’t miss it!)

Quince: Shop a rotating cast of daily deals – Quince’s prices are already great, so these are a total steal. We own and love this long, responsible down puffer coat and this classic washable silk slip dress (I’d recommend this over the skirt version – it’s a bit more versatile!).

The Link Up: The True Crime Podcast Emily Binged, The Shampoo That’s Healing Jess’ Hair, And A Great Vacuum

true crime podcast

Happy Sunday, everyone! We hope that everyone got some time to spend with their families and friends, and everything went 100% smoothly:) While still making sure we are updating you on all of the best Black Friday Sales (HUGE thanks to Caitlin for that), we were very grateful for that little time off. Q4 is truly no joke, ha. But don’t worry, we haven’t actually stopped working and have a really special post for you tomorrow. Until then, here are this week’s links…

This week’s house tour is happy, modern, fresh, with a heavy dose of charming quirk! It’s so fun to see the creativity of this space. Go check it out!

From Emily: The true crime podcast (but not too creepy) I BINGED. Monica Padman (of Armchair Expert fame) created this wild podcast, Beth’s Dead, that explored after her favorite podcasters (Andy and Elizabeth from Nobody’s Listening, Right?) abruptly stopped publishing. Eight years later, she found out why, which was due to a really upsetting parasocial relationship gone awry. I paid to join Patreon so I could binge the entire thing (I HAD to find out what happened), but there are 5 episodes out now and 5 more you can listen to for free anywhere you get your podcasts. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. There are twists and turns, and the ending, well, I don’t want to give it away, but you leave feeling way better than you thought you would. If you are driving or flying or just need to take a long walk during Thanksgiving break, binge Beth’s Dead.

From Arlyn: With the exception of the Hoka running shoes I bought a few years back (and still use), I really try not to spend more than $60 or $70 on sneakers. I always see influencers sharing ridiculously cute sneakers, but as soon as I see the price has three numbers behind the dollar sign, I click away. Nope. It’s one thing if I’m buying true performance sneakers for running or tennis, etc., but I mostly stick to fashion versions. Which is why I was so stoked when I came across these red Nike Cortez for about $58! They’re lightweight, comfortable for hours of walking, and get tons of compliments. Not to mention, they seriously jazz up my predominantly black, navy, and burgundy wardrobe.

From Jess: I don’t know about y’all, but I was being advertised HARD the ROZ Haircare line. And with bleaching my very grown-out roots a month-ish ago, my hair felt like it lost a lot of the health I’d been working on this prior year. So I thought, why not, and so far I LOVE how my hair feels. I had the pre-shower oil, shampoo, and conditioner. My hair feels and looks so soft and smells really great. Once I run out of the one I already have, I’m going to get their Milk Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner Hair Serum. On their site, they do have a 2-week “try before you buy” option, or if you want those Sephora points, they carry their line too!

From Mallory: I stumbled upon the BEST sample sale last weekend and found the cutest wool pants – Em first introduced me to Trovata a few years ago, and I’ve always really loved their pieces (it’s a super small brand, the guy working there said there were only 7 people in the whole company!!). The quality of their products is really impressive, so when I bumped into their store, which had a massive sample sale, I knew I had to snag some items – like these great pants. A lot of the sale is still happening online (or if you live close to Newport Beach, that’s where their flagship store was!) Definitely check it out – these pieces would also make great gifts!

From Gretchen: I’ve been in desperate need of a new vacuum and have been weighing my options for a while now. My parents were coming up to stay with me for the holiday, so I needed to bite the bullet and purchase one finally so I could banish the dust bunnies before they’d have to face family judgment. All vacuums I’ve owned previously have been cordless, and for various reasons (battery strength, suck-ability, and a constant need to cut my long hair free from the roller mechanism), I’ve never been super happy with the ones I bought (admittedly, they were cheap and under-researched choices). So I took to the internet to find a corded option that was easy to maneuver (like my previous cordless vacs) in hopes that it would be more reliable. And the one I found has so far been awesome! It’s the Shark Detect Ultralight Corded Stick Vacuum. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a months-long-use review, but in the few times I’ve used it, I’ve already fallen in love! It’s got the size, shape, and bagless features of the cordless machines that came before, but it does plug in, meaning I never have to worry about the battery dying on me. Plus, the cord is long enough to reach most spots in my apartment without the need to re-plug. The main reason I went for it is that it boasts automatic hair removal, which has so far been true—none of my long, loose hairs stand a chance getting stuck on the roller. I also love that it has just two simple suck modes–hardwood or carpet–and comes with a bunch of attachments. It glides super easily, isn’t heavy, and can break down to be used handheld, with a long-wand or standard push-along. The price tag was just right (I bought it on Amazon for under $200 two weeks ago, but annoyingly, it looks like they’ve since raised the price. But actually, it’s on sale on Shark’s website for less than what I paid for a BF sale). It has a nice “dust light” so you can really see what gunk needs sucking up and if it’s working (it does). I had literally been on my hands and knees using a shop vac to clean my place before, so this is leaps and bounds better. So happy I can check “quality, easy, inexpensive vacuum” off my list!

From Marlee: I really love a low-profile shoe. I have a pair of vintage Onitsuka Tigers that I thrifted in high school that I have worn into the ground – the soles are completely falling off, even though I’ve super-glued them multiple times. I love them so much and would wear them forever if I could. I definitely want to pick up another pair at some point, but I found this pair of Adidas at Nordstrom, and they have a similar vibe/silhouette. I love that they give a sporty look without being actual walking/running shoes – but still so comfy. I got the yellow color because it was on sale, but I also loved this brown color, the silver, and this maroon is so fun too. Adidas definitely runs big – I’m normally between a 9 and a 9.5, and I comfortably fit into an 8.5 in these.

Thanks for spending a little bit of time with us today, and see y’all back here tomorrow. xx

Y’all, I put a decent amount of Etsy gifts on the home gift guide (linked HERE if you missed it), and I’m happy to report that many of them are now sold out thanks to you. Truly, nothing makes me happier than getting an email from an unsuspecting and delighted maker after featuring them. So we thought we’d do a full post about our recent favorite Etsy finds to see if the power of this blog can make some Christmas magic for these artists and for anyone receiving their wares.

Pretty Candles & Candle Holders HANDMADE SCANDI CANDLE HOLDER $20 CERAMIC CANDLE SNUFFER $38 SINGLE WALL CANDLE SCONCE $36

Handmade Scandi Candle Holder: Maker-made, timeless, seasonless – just a beautiful handmade piece.
Ceramic Candle Snuffer: Why blow out a candle when you can snuff it out (and leave this styled next to it). Particularly handy for mantel candles so you don’t blow wax all over your wall (true story).
Single Wall Candle Sconce: This would look so pretty flanking a piece of art – lit or unlit.

CABLE KNIT CANDLE $15 STRIPED CANDLESTICK HOLDERS $39 WOODEN CANDLE HOLDER VASE SET $60

Cable Knit Candle: This candle with a cute box of matches is a no-brainer:)
Striped Candlestick Holders: How playful, whimsical, and fun. Design forward for those who love color and pattern.

Handwoven Wool Coverlet: Such a beautiful color and simple pattern.

Kitchen Items WALNUT SCALLOP CUTTING BOARD $80 HANDMADE SALT CELLAR $36 SCALLOPED WOOD COOKBOOK STAND $65

Walnut Scallop Cutting Board: It’s the scalloped edge that does it for me. I bought this for myself 🙂
Handmade Salt Cellar: Would look gorgeous next to your range (and made by a small maker).
Scalloped Wood Cookbook Stand: I’m still analog in the kitchen (I hate looking at my phone or laptop and having to keep unlocking the page). How pretty is this???

JAPANESE SALT CELLAR $68 WOOD END GRAIN CUTTING BOARD $60 ROUNDED CERAMIC BUTTER DISH $51

Japanese Salt Cellar: Endlessly obsessed with beautiful things for your countertop, this moody salt cellar (with some Jacobson salt, perhaps?) would so so pretty in a more contemporary organic kitchen.
Wood End Grain Cutting Board: Wood, but make it checkered. 10/10
Rounded Ceramic Butter Dish: My love of butter dishes knows no bounds…See?…

HANDMADE BUTTER DISH $95 FRENCH BUTTER KEEPER  $58 EUROPEAN STYLE BUTTER DISH $52

Handmade Butter Dish: Dark and moody, with that loop on top.
French Butter Keeper: Pretty sure if the French do it this way, you should, too.
European Style Butter Dish: For those who like a butter dish that fits larger sticks (like Kerrigold).

Pottery LEATHER + CERAMIC TRINKET BOX $85 HANDMADE STASH BOX $25 ANIMAL TRINKET BOX $69

Leather + Ceramic Trinket Box: Think nightstand, entry, on top of a stack of books, or bathroom vanity 🙂
Handmade Stash Box: Handmade and so sweet, useful, and the round shape is great on a stack of square books (stash a handwritten note inside!)
Animal Trinket Box: For those who crave whimsy. How cute are these?

PEDESTAL BOWL AND VASE SET $235 SPIKY SERVING TRAY $60 CERAMIC SERVING TRAY $135

Pedestal Bowl and Vase Set: A statement set for sure, but I love how versatile.
Spiky Serving Tray: Oddly punk rock for a serving tray 🙂
Ceramic Serving Tray: Classic and such a pretty train track shape with the most delicate lip.

BLUE POTTERY PLATTER $109 CERAMIC CARVED OVAL PLATTER $52 STRIPE SERVING PLATTER $36

Blue Pottery Platter: So pretty on a shelf leaned vertically.
Ceramic Carved Oval Platter: I love this handmade feel (for those who love warm minimalism).
Stripe Serving Platter: A fun pop of pattern, but in a classic color palette.

Small Decor MARBLED STONE BUBBLE COASTER $15 CLOUD CONCRETE TRAY $35 STONE CATCHALL $22

All of these are so great for styling – on top of a stack of books to hold a candle and matches. On your nightstand to hold hair ties and jewelry, or on your vanity or entry table for your keys. I can put these literally anywhere – just ask 🙂

Marbled Stone Bubble Coaster: Such a sweet little border (ooh, could even be a wine bottle coaster!)
Cloud Concrete Tray: Organic yet still simple (and not boring).
Stone Catchall: I love how the light dances on this catchall.

CERAMIC JUG VASE $43 WOODEN BOX WITH LID $56 LEATHER WALL POCKET ORGANIZER $126

Ceramic Jug Vase: Do not sleep on jugs for vases – the handle adds to the shape of the overall flower arrangement.
Wooden Box With Lid: Great for matches, keys, or on a nightstand with your unmentionables.
Leather Wall Pocket Organizer: I love this for a space that needs to utilize vertical wall space for storage.

Art Prints & Originals ORIGINAL ABSTRACT PAINTING $69 ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE $65 ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING $110

Original Abstract Painting: Original painting (sold, but the artist has many more). Art is the hardest thing to buy for the home. These pieces are easy to love!
Original Mixed Media Collage: One-of-a-kind, original collages and many to choose from (trust me, giving art is my FAVORITE).
Original Oil Painting: Original oil painting (this one has sold, but there are so many more pieces in her Etsy Shop). I love these colors (and only one!!)

SMALL OYSTER PAINTING $70 MINIMALIST BIRD ART PRINT $61 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR $50

Small Oyster Painting: Oysters and sardines are having a moment – don’t ask me, but I’m into them, too!
Minimalist Bird Art Print: The color palette is soft with that pop of blue – feels both sophisticated and playful.
Original Watercolor: NOT A PRINT!! An original watercolor that adds so much soul to a home (many different available!)

Etsy things I have and Love CHARM NECKLACE $21 MONOGRAMMED GOLF BALL MARKER $20

Charm Necklace: I have this and already added charms that my kids have given me over every Mother’s Day (fantastic hack, ladies – just add for pretty charms and everyone wins. Kids love picking out charms that represent their interests that year :))
Monogrammed Golf Ball Marker: I bought these for my FIL in hopes that he loves them and brags to his friends about me:)

WAVY CENTERPIECE BOWL $135 MONOCHROME BOBBIN FRAME $75 CUSTOM NAME TENNIS BRACELET $33

Handkerchief Ceramic Bowl: I love how this bowl catches the light (it dances around) on top of a stack of books. Comes in a creamy white as well (and can hold nuts, matches, remotes – anything!)
Bobbin Frames: These lacquered colors are so beautiful, and this maker does this so well – support her instead of the big box knockoffs! These live on our family wall up the stairs and reflect the light.
Customized Tennis Bracelet: My sentimentalism knows no bounds. I sent this link to Brian for an Elliot and Charlie bracelet (in gold). I’m not a huge diamond lady, so I’m ok that it’s not fine jewelry 🙂

I feel like I can get lost on Etsy in the best of ways. Saturday morning with my coffee, deep diving for art and pottery that I likely don’t need but deeply want. It’s a win/win to support smaller makers, local or not. And if you missed our “Best Stores to Shop Small in Portland” post from Wednesday, head over there if you are a local to support our incredible creative community here. xx

My Favorite Places To Shop Small In Portland – Design Forward Gifts, Furniture, And Home Decor

Okay, local Portland folks, this one is for you (and me). No town loves supporting local more than Portland (I mean, our incredible airport with all the indie restaurants is proof!). And while we have to link up a lot of national brand products here for the business (and so all of you can benefit/shop), I really, really want these local businesses to thrive, not just during the holidays but year-round. So we dedicated two days to cruising around town and shooting our favorite stores to share with you. I couldn’t find a comprehensive list anywhere on the internet (and we still missed some, I know), but this list is pretty dang good, and we’ll keep adding to it (please let us know who we missed in the comments!). Portland, I love you.

Oh, and we even made a Google Map to help you find all of these wonderful businesses, much easier at the end of the post:)

Central Eastside Shops

CES (Central EastSide) is my go-to neighborhood when I need a fix (or any decor for a project/shoot). There are so many stores near each other that are all pretty incredible. The neighborhood itself has a lot of cool murals and is very industrial. Feel free to eat at Boke Bowl, Shalom Y’all, Olympic Provisions, or Clark Lewis (for dinner), or if you want to walk a few blocks, Hat Yai is incredible and where I took my family again for my birthday lunch (after Urbanite).

UrbaniteShop Small In Portland

Urbanite is a no-miss, whether you are a local or visiting. It’s a vintage mall that is simply excellent. So many booths of highly curated vintage at prices that feel totally fair, with a lot of contemporary makers. There is furniture, decor, a lot of gifts, books, and fashion. I have never left without buying like 5 things.

My friend, Purl (who made our coffee table, corbels, and so much art that I’ve bought), has a super eclectic booth that always surprises and delights.

Vessel – A great example of a contemporary local maker that has these awesome lamps as well as vintage (I almost bought these lamps for my team for Christmas last year at the Christmas Bazaar, but she sold them all out!).

There isn’t a ton of furniture, but I’ve certainly walked away with some larger pieces. Shout out to Gray (not shown), who is a designer in town who has a fantastic booth.

There are Moroccan rugs (shout out to Nomadic Vintage), pop art (Moderna), and so much up-cycled fashion. I know that I’m missing so many tags, handles, and links to websites, so please leave your favorites in the comments. Their website has most of them featured, which I appreciate, and they keep their Instagram pretty up-to-date. Urbanite is also where I discovered so many artists/makers/curators who have grown into their own spaces that are mostly by appointment, but very much worth the effort. I’m talking about you – Fabius Grange and ShopWilma (both INCREDIBLE vintage art and furniture curators, respectively).

Across the street from Urbanite is Rejuvenation – which we didn’t take new photos in, but obviously a fantastic, locally owned, larger company we love that has furniture, lighting, decor, and a lot of vintage, too.

Just up the street is Spartan Shop, which is incredible – more of a gallery, featuring contemporary makers’ furniture and decor (and very splurgy but inspirational). If you are looking for a larger selection of vintage rugs (especially Moroccan or Turkish), Nomadic also has its own storefront just down the road.

Primecut

New to me but nearby is Primecut – a gift store with a lot of dope leather bags and smaller curated gifts.

Extremely stylish and design-forward gifts for someone who likes the less expected but very cool.

Cargo

Cargo isn’t just a makers mall – it’s a whole experience. It’s a fantastic place to bring people visiting Portland for the first time.

It’s such an exciting store, beautifully curated with a lot of pop-up shops from so many of our favorite local designers or retailers. Think Pigeon Toe Ceramics, Woonwinkel, and Lisa Congdon (amongst so many others).

If you only have time to shop for gifts at one place in Portland, I’d nominate Cargo.

Cargo has plants, jewelry, records, books, pottery, vintage, up-cycled fashion, party supplies, crafts, stationery, and contemporary home decor. It’s seriously incredible.

Lisa Congdon is a famous Portland illustrator and graphic designer who sells a lot of her wares there. I love her playful and colorful vibe (so does Elliot).

Woonwinkel has a storefront in downtown Portland, but a pretty incredible pop-up here. Fantastic gifts for the design-forward, color-lover. I’m a massive fan.

20th Century Interiors

It took me WAY too long to discover this store – 20th Century. Hidden from easy view, it’s a warehouse of Scandinavian vintage that is incredible. I’ve bought a few paintings from here (splurgy, but fairly priced), and it is a fantastic place for inspiration.

Currently, mid-century isn’t as “trendy” as it has been in the past, but it has my heart (especially the greats), and it’s coming back fast.

KABINETT PDX

Next door to 20th Century is KABINETT PDX, which has new and vintage furniture, plus a vermouth shop that has a ton of beautiful barware and gifts.

It’s a lot of eye candy, with some extremely cool, larger-scale European posters (prints) that I’m always so tempted by. My team and I spent a while flipping through them all.

Memory Den Vintage Mall

Of all the vintage malls in Portland, Memory Den is my kid’s favorite. It has booth after booth of curated but still affordable, really fun finds.

Memory Den has fashion, home decor, records, and a lot of thriftstore-y furniture (great finds to redo or upgrade).

Plus, they serve cocktails. So while the kids play with the huge chess piece game on the first floor, Brian and I might walk around with a cocktail after lunch, and it’s a great indoor winter afternoon.

City Home

I love City Home. They have carved out a really important niche where you can go in and walk out with anything in the store that day (including furniture). No lead times, no ordering, and no following up. You need a dining table? You can literally go in and take one home.

There are multiple City Home locations, and they are all so good (Lake Oswego and Cedar Hills are the other two I frequent).

loveTEAK

We unintentionally stumbled upon loveTeak, which is more of a global import outdoor furniture store, but I wanted to give it some love because they have a lot of high-quality furniture in a really pretty space.

Filthy Antiques

Another happy stumble upon – Filthy Antiques is new and a really fun vintage store full of a ton of denim, rustic furniture, and really well priced.

The owner has been a picker for decades and has a great eye for a more masculine vintage vibe in a really cool space.

Hoppe Shoppe

Hoppe Shoppe is by far the best home decor store in Portland for those of us excited to stare at, hold, and splurge on the prettiest things for your home.

The owner is a former stylist in New York and has an incredible eye for both antiques and new pieces. Think gorgeous dinnerware, candles, lighting, and textiles. I WANTED EVERY SINGLE THING. It was so refreshing to shop here. The quality and curation are next level and show that there is a market in Portland for all these beautiful gifts for the design enthusiast.

You can easily spend an hour in here looking at every single thing (if you love design). It’s a real dream and a fantastic place to buy a home/kitchen enthusiast a gift.

Now, before you leave the Eastside, head over to quite possibly my favorite antique mall – Monticello. We didn’t have time to go this day, but trust me when I say that every time I go, I leave with far more than I intended. The pricing is really fair, the curation is excellent, and the attached cafe sells mimosas that you can walk around with while shopping (making this a fantastic girls’ day activity). For my birthday, I brought Kaitlin here, and we sipped mimosas and shopped (and likely bought far more with the softened judgment).

Here are some more that we didn’t make it to that day, but I want to make sure you know about:

Artemisia: A really sweet plant and natural perfume shop that also offers workshops, like making your own perfumes or creating a terrarium to take home.
Starflower: Another great plant and flower shop. They create some really magical arrangements, and their shop is inspiring.
Day Goods: A great store with colorful, design-forward homewares that carries some of our favorites mentioned above, like Primecut and Vessel. Pop into the other great shops next door, Seven Sisters and OURstore Vintage, for a fun selection of clothes (both vintage and small-batch) and a variety of home goods and great gifts.
Motif: A small but mighty vintage homewares shop with an excellent curation and awesome vibe.
Hippo Hardware: A classic Portland staple, Hippo sells all kinds of vintage building salvage, like hardware, lighting, and plumbing fixtures. A ton of cool, old stuff to check out.

Sellwood Shops

Sticking to the Eastside but heading deeper South is our Sellwood neighborhood – another one of my faves for vintage shopping and more. An easy neighborhood to spend a day poking around.

Notary Ceramics

Notary Ceramics is a Portland staple that has mastered the art of gorgeous kitchen ceramics. Another store where I want most everything in it (and have purchased many pieces).

The owner and ceramicist, Sarah, is such a lovely person, and you can feel so good about supporting her and her store. Her work is special.

Plural Collective

Plural is a sweet shop with a lot of local and small makers selling jewelry, plants, kids’ clothes, and a lot of accessories.

When my team came to visit for the first time, I gave them a gift bag full of local Portland favorites and bought a few pieces here (candles and matches, I think). It’s just a sweet spot to grab a gift or three.

Stars Antiques

I don’t think there is one antique mall that I’ve spent more time in over the decades I’ve been in Portland (or visiting). In Sellwood, there are two Stars antique malls, both just fantastic. So many curated booths that have the most variety of vintage pieces (everything from hyper-kitchy/retro to fashion to more of a thrift style, dig-through-bins booths).

We ran out of time to shoot in every store that day, but I want to link up the rest in this neighborhood that we love:
Midtown Mod: A funky, great vintage shop with many great midcentury finds and color-coordinated home goods.
Adored Vintage: An awesomely curated clothing boutique and gift store that feels warm and inviting.
Silly Daisy: An adorable children’s and women’s boutique with sweet soft goods and clothes, homewares, and great gifts.
The Collective: “A group of dedicated dealers selling a variety of vintage, collectible, antique, and other unique curated items.” They don’t have a website, but they’ve been around forever, and their shop is worth a peek.

North/Northeast Shops

Truth be told, this is an area I spend the least amount of time in as it’s furthest from my neighborhood. If there are shops here that simply can’t be missed, please tell us about them in the comments! Ones I do know of and love are:
Mantel PDX: This is a wonderful space full of handmade ceramics, homewares, and jewelry. They work with small, independent artists and have an awesome selection of pieces that would make a great gift for yourself or a loved one.
Paxton Gate: This shop is just rad. A great spot to bring a curious kid and look around or buy an off-the-wall gift for the nature-obsessed. Think taxidermy, crystals, plants, and books about every curiosity.
Flutter: A maximalist gift shop full of great finds. A fun atmosphere with art, books, clothing, home goods, tarot decks, and more.
Zig Zag Vintage: A great, eclectic vintage clothing store with fair prices and a fun selection. A nice spot to shop around while you’re waiting for your name to be called at Tin Shed for brunch.
Laundry: An awesome “vintage teamwear” shop. They’ve got hats, jerseys, sweatshirts – you name it. A great spot to find a special gift for the sports-obsessed.

Northwest Shops

One of my favorite neighborhoods to walk around in is Northwest Portland. It is just so pretty. I secretly wish there were way more design shops, but I fear retail must be so expensive. Here are some of our favorites, both on and off the beaten path (we didn’t have time to shoot here this time!).

Tender Loving Empire

photos by tender loving empire

A classic Portland indie store that has a lot of locations, Tender Loving Empire, and is full of gifts and Portland souvenirs – jewelry, mugs, candles, books. They champion small makers and designers, and their stores are really fun and exciting to be in.

The Yo Store

The Yo Store is an extremely popular design-forward store full of fashion, gifts, home, and kids’ stuff. So well curated, full of color, and just really cool stuff (Kaitlin shoots for them and has bought very cool stuff from here).

Schoolhouse

One of my favorite stores of all time, in a gorgeous building with a coffee shop. Schoolhouse Electric is a Portland classic and much beloved. Furniture, home, gifts, art, kitchen, lighting – anything you want that is design forward and scandy/midcentury/industrial in spirit. There is a lovely irreverence to this place, with everything being heirloom quality. Check hours/days as they aren’t open a lot during the week (which is my only beef with them :))

A few more honorable mentions in this general area:
Porch Light: A mix of old and new, from plants to jewelry, glassware, ceramics, candles, and plenty more beautiful objects for your home.
Pistils Nursery: A stunning plant shop (they also do wonderful landscape design) that offers workshops and a wide variety of plant life. It’s great to get lost in here.
Betsy & Iya: Incredible handmade jewelry store where everything is made in-house. A beautiful storefront that also sells slow fashion, ceramics, and other pretty homewares.

Southwest Shops:

These are the Southwest shops downtown that I love to frequent or have been dying to check out. Sadly, we didn’t have time to stop by for pictures, but these stores are worth a visit:

Storied Objects: A tiny and well-curated gallery that always has such stunning art (think sculptures, pottery, glass).
Canoe: One of my favorites for years, Canoe has high-end gifts, home, kitchen, tech, and jewelry. A perfect place to shop for anyone who loves the most beautiful mug or bookend.
Midnight Sunlight: I’m so embarrassed to say I’ve never been here, but I follow on IG and LOVE their pieces. Rather famous in Portland, Midnight Sunlight has awesome vintage and a lot of it.
Frances May: Fashion, jewelry, and accessories for the very fashion-forward (with a budget). I love to browse to see what will happen in fashion next (it’s extremely splurgy and not mainstream). Wilma did a pop-up on the second floor with her vintage this year, and the owner of Frances May is a huge advocate for reviving Portland’s downtown, so know that shopping here supports people who support our community.
Powell’s: You can’t come to Portland without popping into Powell’s – our famously large, exceptional used (and new) bookstore (that also sells games, merch, and gifts).

Multnomah Village

I’m going to be really biased here because this is my personal neighborhood hangout, but for good reason. Multnomah Village is ridiculously cute and full of so much to do (and so safe for our kids – they cruise around by themselves). We are here weekly, if not more, in the summer. Beers at Level (while kids play pinball), lunch at Johns (biggest beer selection this side of the Mississippi), delicious food at Yalla (you’ll want reservations), breakfast at Fat City Cafe (so much kitchy charm), family meal at Marcos, great drinks at The Gibson, Proper Pint and Hide-A-While, Thai food at Thai Herbs, Mexican at Titos Taquitos, Upscale American at Zinc and don’t forget two of Portland best dive bars (seriously so good) Renners and The Ship (just make sure to Uber home – these drinks are strong). If you are with kids and dogs and want a guaranteed spot outside, head to Lucky Lab (beers and pizza) or the food carts at French Quarter (both charming in their own ways). That’s all to say, there is a ton to eat while you come to shop. We only shot at a few places that are my personal favorites for home design (also because it was pouring and we ran out of time).

Form & Function

In my top three favorite/best stores in Portland is Form & Function. A fantastically curated mix of vintage and new Scandinavian design that hits all price points and is just exciting to be in. I can’t say enough great things about this store, and I really, really want it to do so well this Christmas. They just got a huge container from their shopping in Denmark, Finland, Sweden – such beautiful furniture (and free delivery in Portland). It’s one block off the main drag and full of a lot of art and small accessories as well, so please don’t miss it.

JP General

I love this store, and it’s where Brian gets all of my birthday presents (he brings the kids here and they pick something out). A great curation of design-forward tabletop, jewelry, gardening, barware, and even some tech.

Indigo Traders

Such a lovely store of imported Turkish, Moroccan, and Middle Eastern goods. Everything from towels to rugs, baskets, kitchen supplies, cookbooks, and olive oils. If you know someone into tea or Moroccan cooking (or so many pretty towels), this store is great.

Consign Couture

A fantastic high-end resale shop where I sell all my clothes and have to close my eyes when I go in to sell as to not buy more (or buy back something that I missed, LOL). It’s really, really good.

ComeUnityPDX

This shop has so many local artists and designers and celebrates them well. I’m headed back for a few things next week, actually 🙂 I love that they expose me to new artists.

Thinker Toys

Everyone in SW Portland knows this adorable toy shop (and has spent hundreds on birthday gifts here). An abundance of toys for all ages and a great shopping experience.

Village Cheer

Probably my kids’ favorite store – full of great gifts and party supplies and run by lovely people.

I wanted to link up and promote the rest of the businesses that we didn’t pop into but are also GREAT in this neighborhood:
Multnomah Antiques: I love popping into this shop when I need a fix. It’s more antique-y than vintage, but I’ve walked away with a quilt or two, and my kids love it.
Annie Bloom Books: Another classic in the village, Annie Bloom is the indie book store (outside of Powell’s). I actually tried to get them to do a book signing for my last book, and no one responded, but I love this place, and we go often with the kids.
Magpie: Great jewelry and gifts that are unique and easy to love.
Village Kids Supply Co: We donate most of the kids’ gently used clothes here (fantastic, especially for baby or toddler supplies).
Mad Sass Soap Co: Homemade soaps make fantastic gifts because it’s something we all need (and it’s a consumable, so less of a risk).
Nurture: This just opened and has the sweetest wooden and handmade stuffed animals. I love a really specific store like this, so for the perfect baby toy for parents who love aesthetic design, head here (I really want it to stay in business!).
Peggy Sundays: Great for pretty mugs, frames, cocktail napkins – think gifts for ladies that like to host.
Peachtree Gifts: Wait, this might be my kids’ favorite store. It’s where they buy their dad’s funny socks and candy shaped like food. Think greeting cards, fun stocking stuffers, and beanies.
SAGE. flowers: Sage opened last year, and it was much needed. A beautiful floral and plant shop that the locals love.
Narrative Home Design: New to me (I’m so embarrassed I haven’t popped in), but a place I’d love to donate my good home things to. Narrative has great vintage or secondhand furniture and home decor (right next to Katelyn’s Closet, which is a non-designer fashion consignment shop).

Who Did We Miss???

Of course, you simply CAN’T miss Aurora (an adorable town 30 minutes away full of 10-15 antique stores, including the famous Aurora Mills), but the outskirts might need their own big blog post. Please tell us who we missed because we’d love to include and promote them (be patient, as my team is off for the holidays, but we’ll try to add to the list next week!). Happy shopping, Portland. xx

We Made A Map!!

Here’s a little interactive Google map Marlee put together to make finding all of these great places easy! So definitely bookmark it. And when you are using it on your phone, you can also filter by gifts, home goods, etc. THANK YOU, MARLEE!

5 Interesting (& Fun) Ideas Happening In Design Right Now + Why We’re Not Calling Them “Trends”

Ideas Happening in Design

For obvious reasons, we write a lot about interior design and home decorating trends. But sometimes, we come across moments and concepts we think are worth exploring that aren’t necessarily en masse the way a “trend” is. For instance (and a bit of a spoiler alert): Swans in home decor are popping up a lot, but by no means do I think that large majestic birds are “happening.” They’re just a stylistic choice someone chooses because they love it. The same goes for the color pink right now. Blush, dusty mauve, and fleshy peach were never out of style—imho, no color is ever obsolete if used in a fresh way—but more and more, I’m seeing designers go all-in on rose.

So, today, I’m diving into five non-trends that I just plain and simply think are fun happenings in the design world worth bringing to your attention. No pomp; no circumstance; no large declarations. Just “Hey, watcha think about this?” conversations.

#1: Blue Marble Countertops

Blue marble tends to come off a bit dated when it has the wrong edge finish and in a kitchen that feels overly fussy. It was a thing in custom kitchens in the early 1900s, then again in the ’70s and ’80s, and is definitely making a strong comeback recently, though still quite niche.

Kate Hudson famously picked a vibrant blue, heavily veined marble for the kitchen she renovated in her current home, which also happens to have been her childhood residence. People either love it or hate it, with some critics saying it looks like a cheap pool liner. While it’s not really something I would pick for myself, maybe ever (it’s just not my preference for veining style), I’m all for *her* loving it.

A post shared by Architectural Digest (@archdigest)

Here is the kitchen (above) that she did in collaboration with Cafe Appliances, which ran in Architectural Digest. Bright white and true blue is a bit high-contrast for my liking, but it’s a classic combination, so while it seems pretty bold, it is tried-and-true to say the least.

A post shared by Guild Anderson | Bespoke Kitchens (@guildanderson)

This deeper, more gray-blue countertop—the same kitchen from the opening image, a design by Guild Anderson—is more in line with my personal taste. Same result, in that it feels both vintage and forward at the same time, but more palatable and low-key.

A marble with tons of movement mixed with a strong wood grain is hard to pull off, but there is something very cozy and rustic about this kitchen, by Eleanor Roper Interiors.

Moving into the bathroom, a deeper blue marble is easier to work with because you only need a little bit due to the smaller space. I especially love it in a color-drench aesthetic, such as the powder bath above by Decus Interiors.

Coe Mudford Interior Design turned a simple fireplace wall into the star of the room with this soft blue marble slab design. In a traditional white-and-grey marble, for instance, it would have been beautiful but expected, and this choice adds just enough color to be interesting without being pushy.

A post shared by STAREL stones (@starel_stones)

This bathroom shared by Starel Stones notes that it uses blue wave marble, resulting in a room that looks like you’re floating in the clouds (or sea). I’m transfixed, honestly.

A blue lapis marble is absolutely stunning in this petite modern bathroom by Hunt and Design. Note that they took it above the arch of the mirror to great result.

#2: Saltillo Floor Tiles

In general, welcoming, character-filled interiors and architecture are increasingly desirable, as compared to stark or pristine contemporary homes. And with that, we’re seeing warmer colors and materials more and more. One in particular I’ve been eyeing is Saltillo tiles. Now, you may see what I’ve posted below and think “oh, terra cotta!” but well…not exactly. All Saltillo tiles are terra cotta, but not all terra cotta is Saltillo.

Saltillo needs to be made in Coahuila, Mexico (the capital city is Saltillo) using old-world, hand-made techniques. It’s very durable, naturally slip-resistant, and affordable at around $5 to $6 per square foot, installed. The only downside is that, since it’s a natural, unglazed material, it needs to be resealed every few years, depending on foot traffic.

I love that the designer (Terramar Interiors) here retained the original Saltillo floors in the bedroom that adjoins this bathroom suite, and made them feel purposeful and fresh by bringing in a similarly toned floor in a star and cross brick pattern.

The Saltillo tiles we typically see are square in varying sizes with thick grout lines between them, but this brick-shaped Saltillo from Tiles of Ezra reads way more modern, paired with crisp white walls, a sleek gray pedestal(ish) sink, and ribbed aqua glass.

While this is technically red cotto from Zia Tile, I wanted to show it because we don’t typically see an organic, hand-made floor like this with a modern kitchen like the above by Laun Studio. It’s a good reminder that just because you’re renovating doesn’t mean you always have to tear out everything. Sometimes old lends some gravitas to new.

Saltillo works especially well in hacienda- or mission-style homes. I love it with creamy plaster walls and architectural features like this fireplace in a home by Intimate Living Interiors.

These floors are fantastic choices for hard-working rooms like the kitchen and bathroom due to their durability, which comes from the fact that Saltillo tiles are typically quite thick (about 3/4-inch) and fired at very high temperatures.

Oooh, a picket design! The listing for this home notes that this style is rare, which is unfortunate because it’s so lovely.

#3: Pink Top-To-Bottom

Unexpected red. Burgundy. Brown. Now…pink! Of course, all of those colors are different, but they do live in the same world of warm, rich red undertones. Soft, blushy pinks are popping up everywhere I look, particularly in bathrooms, though it’s a gorgeous, nearly neutral hue for any living space, really.

A post shared by Heidi Caillier Design (@heidicaillierdesign)

I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this bathroom Heidi Caillier recently shared, mostly due to that gorgeous built-in cabinet, but also because the color palette just glows.

When I said above that a satiny pink like this bathroom by Uns Hobbs Interior is basically a neutral, what I meant is that it works so well with almost any color. Green? Yes! Brown? Of course. Purple or white or blue or red? God, yes! Going to bookmark Farrow & Ball Templeton Pink for a future room…

I mean, who doesn’t want a glossy pink kitchen in Paris? Pairing a sweet, fleshy pink like this with other tan surfaces keeps the color from leaning too saccharin. (Be sure to click through to see the pink stone fireplace surround, too!!)

A post shared by House Beautiful UK (@housebeautifuluk)

Look, I love a color-drenched room like the next person, but at times, it can feel like the walls are caving in on you if things are too dark. But in a dusty pink, it still feels happy, intentional, and dramatic.

#4: Chintz

Ah chintz. I’ve long had a hate-hate relationship with this fuddy-duddy floral. HOWEVER, it’s actually a fascinating fabric that has grown on me. To be specific, chintz fabric is a plain weave cotton that has a glaze or sheen and typically features colorful, repeating floral patterns. It was originally created and produced in India, and after being imported into Europe, it was banned by England and France because it was too popular and threatened their domestic fabric.

The fabric and pattern is niche and not for everyone, but I’ve grown to appreciate it on a skirted sofa, fringed ottoman, or ruffled pillow in a room I’d love to stay in for the weekend (though not necessarily live in).

A post shared by Heidi Caillier Design (@heidicaillierdesign)

I mean, Heidi Caillier makes anything and everything look good, and she almost has me convinced I need a chintz-covered roll-arm sofa. For me, it works because it’s expertly blended with other less frilly patterns and furniture silhouettes.

A post shared by Compton Smith Interiors (@comptonsmithinteriors)

There has been a collective obsession with English interiors for the last five or more years, and a chintzy rose-printed sofa feels perfectly at the center of this design style. Note the pairing with the kilim rug and the geometric ottoman fabric.

Chintz doesn’t have to be heavy-handed. It can also be soft and more subtle, like the Colefax & Fowler Fuchsia fabric used on the armchairs above in the home of Emma Sherlock.

Another skirted armchair, this time by A Glass of Bovino, who loves chintz so much, you can find it in one form or another across her whole beautiful and elegant home.

Not brave enough to go with a floral-patterned sofa? Stick to a solid but then have some fun on your ottoman, perchance with a chintz and fringe? Uns Hobbs Interiors creates another interesting, layered room with that exact technique.

#5: Swans

Okay, hear me out…swans…I saw a lot of articles last summer about TikTok’s “swancore,” and I rolled my eyes. Any word that is affixed to “core” will have that effect on me, but what I thought was a quick passing fad maybe has some staying power?

I’ve written about my love for a little whimsy in our homes, and this fits squarely into that narrative, but remember: A little goes a long way. Try a single vintage brass swan planter. Or a ceramic swan pitcher. Feeling frisky? Put a small swan figurine on a bookshelf. Let’s look at some examples.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Architectural Digest (@archdigest)

Architectural Digest wrote about swans and their return on the home scene just a week or so ago, and I bookmarked it even before locking in what motifs I wanted to write about for this article. It’s a little wild, fun, and frankly, kind of weird (but in a good way…most times).

A post shared by Nikki – Thorn Floral Studio (@thorn_floral_studio)

Now this is just lovely. I’m nearly convinced I now need to find a vintage brass swan in some form or another…particularly a planter-slash-vase.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by •LINDSEY BLACK INTERIORS• (@lindseyblackinteriors)

It’s hard to see this far away, but that brass planter on top of the pink book is indeed a swan. It looks practically demure next to the collection of hands, creepy faces, and vintage oil portraits of bearded men.

A swan oil painting or print is a gentle bridge into swan decor. I don’t have the exact link to the one above, but this one is super close.

Matilda Goad is my quirky, eclectic decor idol. She has so much fun with her home that it would make a serial sad-beiger question their commitment to solely creamy whites. I can’t take my eyes off the swan on the top middle shelf…can you?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MAISON BALZAC (@maisonbalzac)

Maison Balzac has some of my dream too-beautiful-to-use table linens, and this is the first I’m seeing this swan napkin. I’ve gotta say…it’s so regal and lovely and just unusual enough without scaring anyone off.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Designer Wallpapers (@designerwallpapersuk)

I have loved Nina Campbell’s Swan Lake wallpaper since maybe…2011? That’s nearly 15 years, people, and it never gets old to me. So I guess the girl who rolled her eyes at “swancore” is a bit of a hypocrite, hm? (She says to herself…)

Well, that was fun. Honestly, I much prefer talking about interesting things on our radar that we just want to bounce around in our minds or chew on a little bit, rather than a deep dive into a specific trend that we have to decide how we feel about it. Most of these I shared today might never find a home in my home, but it’s a good exercise to mentally try them on to see how far you can push yourself (or not).

Until next time…

Trying Another Sofa Set-Up In Our Living Room: The Milo Sectional Sofa

What a totally abnormal experiment – to be able to try out a few different configurations in your living room in the name of “photographing your sofa line”. Not exactly typical, but my goodness, I wish this on everyone. I suppose that could be the future of AI (so far, it’s doing a terrible job when prompted – No offense, future leader robots!!). Last week, you saw our living room with our double “Barb” set up (which I LOVE), and on that same day, we brought in the sectional sofa (shout out to my team led by Gretch for a lot of literal heavy lifting). It’s hard not to like – it just works visually (but less so functionally). I’ll prove it:

The colors work. The scale of the sectional sofa is great. And it’s so cozy. I love our sectional – it’s chunky and low and so comfortable, with the sink-in-able bench seat and the cushion-y back. It’s a 7 on the firm scale at first, then will wear into a 5 (which is where you want it to be – you don’t want it to look sloppy and mushy).

.slider-info-391577.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391577.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391577.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391577.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

If there were a TV above the fireplace, it might make sense for the configuration to be mainly facing the fireplace, with few other places to sit. But this just isn’t enough seating for this room, which is mostly for hanging out, screen-free, with friends or our kids.

But for fun, let’s look at a slider of both green sofas first:

.slider-info-391582.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391582.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391582.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391582.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

Now, onto the two recent setups:

.slider-info-391585.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391585.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391585.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391585.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

I love how open it looks, how it fills the space, but with enough negative space to allow your eye to rest. But once you’ve had two sofas where everyone gets to spread out while talking, it’s hard to go back (and y’all, this room is big and can handle two sofas, so the single chaise sectional facing a non-TV fireplace doesn’t make sense to be our living room).

Again, the greens:

.slider-info-391596.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391596.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391596.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391596.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

And the other two:

.slider-info-391599.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391599.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391599.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391599.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

The chaise on the Milo is big, though, in such a good way. A total double cuddle corner. And if the cream linen blend scares you (it’s a performance fabric and has a lot of thread variety), know that it comes in a velvet Charcoal and Chocolate as well. I love the chunky arms and how solid it feels.

A little more green, anyone?

.slider-info-391604.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391604.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391604.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391604.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

And finally, the view fully facing the sunroom:)

.slider-info-391608.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-title { font-size: 22px ; } .slider-info-391608.bafg-slider-info .bafg-slider-description { } .slider-info-391608.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button { text-align: center; } .slider-info-391608.bafg-slider-info .bafg_slider_readmore_button:hover { }

I also want to mention that with the cost of furniture these days, this sectional is so well priced at $2,999 and is cheaper during Black Friday sales. I have zero control over what it’s listed at, but boy am I begging for it to be at least 15% off (and Wayfair mostly free shipping, so hopefully that is an extra incentive). It’s all made in Texas and ships out quickly, so you can get it by Christmas (hopefully!).

So which one is your favorite?? As the person who lives here with husband, kids, and pups, I have a clear preference, but I honestly love all three. You all have more distance from it (I’m literally too close to it), so curious what you think. Are you Double Alice? Double Barb (blue and pink)? or Big Milo???

The Link Up: Em’s New Family Show They LOVE , Marlee’s “Shorter Torso With Long Legs” Perfect Jean, And The $7 Gift Everyone Will Love

Happy Sunday, everyone! The weather’s already been cool in Portland, but the temperatures in LA are finally making it feel like the beginning of the holidays. We are all pretty excited to get to spend time with our families this week for Thanksgiving, and maybe check off some holiday gifts during Black Friday. We hope y’all are looking forward to it too. Ok, links?

This week’s house tour is a VERY cool story of how an Austin couple promised the owners of a 100-year-old home, they wouldn’t tear it down if they sold it to them. They kept their promise, but you have to see what they did!

From Emily: Our family has been BINGING a show that I missed altogether, but I must tell my generation, as I know I’m not alone in my former snobbery. Brian and I were in our 20s in New York when Survivor debuted. I had never seen a frame of it, but then Marlee and Gretchen were saying they watched it with their parents in high school, so out of desperation (we finished Modern Family), we gave it a go. We are officially addicted. Marlee gave me a list of the best seasons (there are over 40 now), so we started with season 20, then 28, then 32, 34, and now we are so into it that we are ok watching the less all-star seasons. Our kids (10 and 12) love it, and we talk a lot about psychology, risk-taking, lying, adventure, etc. We watch 1-2 episodes a night after dinner (or their sports/play activities), and it’s become such a lovely way to spend time together with zero effort and full snuggles. Charlie and I sit on floor pillows in front of the fire together and snuggle, which I treasure so much since he’s entering his teen years, like now. So shout out to Jeff Probst and the Mark Burnett crew (who produced my season of Design Star, which I do NOT recommend, LOL.

From Gretchen: After so long hearing Em rave about her favorite percale sheets from Brooklinen, I finally caved and tried them out for myself. And YUP, she’s absolutely right! They are simply the BEST. I knew how soft they were from shooting with them, making the bed, and whatnot, but actually sleeping on them? That’s an entirely different story. It’s almost hard to describe how cozy and comforting they feel. It’s a wildly noticeable difference from sleeping on my run-of-the-mill IKEA sheets, and for that reason, I truly don’t think I’ll ever go back. A great gift for yourself to amp up your sleep game or for any holiday guests if you want to really show off your hosting skills!

From Marlee: I recently got a new pair of jeans that I am really loving. They’re the low loose from Levi’s- low/mid rise (just below the belly button), they sit right at my hips, and are very straight leg. This is my dream fit for jeans – for context, I have a shorter torso with long legs, and feel very awkward in high-waisted jeans. I got them in this really nice dark wash and have already gotten SO many compliments on them in the first week of wearing them. Definitely going to grab them in one more wash! On their website, they recommend sizing up; however, I am usually between a 26 and 27, and I ordered a 26, and they fit perfect. (I also ordered the 27 and they still fit, but just didn’t like the looser look.) My friends who also have them agreed that sizing down is the move because they stretch out a bit after a few wears. I’m 5’8” and got them in the 32” length, and they fall right below my ankle. I like the length of them and think they look great with a boot or clogs, but a 30” length probably would have been a good cropped look too!

Also From Marlee: Also, if you’re reading this on Sunday, we’ve got a 30% off Anthro code for y’all! It’s EMILYH30, and it works on home decor, clothes, you name it. A few of our recent Anthro faves: Em’s favorite new fuzzy blanket, these really solid flameless pillar candles, this super cute trench Em has been wearing this fall, and this puff sleeve sweater:) Today is the last day to use the code!

From Mallory: I’ve been loving a little patterned jacket lately, and this one is SO good for only $55!! How cute is that brown houndstooth?? It’s so perfect for fall.

From Caitlin: I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I could run a Theragun store out of my apartment. (We have the old school standard Theragun, the mini, the roller, the one that wraps around your back…it’s a lot.) But this year, my boyfriend Dennis brought home the crowning jewel of our collection: The Prime Plus Theragun. I want to kiss whoever invented this thing RIGHT ON THE MOUTH. Unlike the Theraguns of yore, this one offers heated attachments, cooling attachments, and a few new shapes (the wedge!) that offer a premium massage experience from the comfort of your home. (Don’t even get me started on the red light functionality – it feels like I’m in a spa whenever I’m using it. And the guided treatments in the Theragun app really work – I can fix my tight hips or back in a matter of minutes!) If you’re looking at a Theragun this holiday season, this is the one worth buying – don’t waste your time on the others. Added bonus: you can buy it with your HSA/FSA funds! Keep your eyes peeled for great deals this week.

From Jess: A brand I’ve loved from afar is Simon Miller. Their clothes are fun, bold, and yet sophisticated. The dream! Well, last week they had a sample sale and let’s just say I am now the proud owner of high-quality sequined pants (plus a handful of other pieces I’m very excited to wear). This sale was also next to their regular store (dangerous), so my friend and I popped in. I then found this knit top. It’s so chic, you can wear a normal bra, and it lies so nicely on. I’m tempted to buy the matching pants on Black Friday, but we’ll see!

From Arlyn: Looking for the gift that *truly* no one knows they needed? A gift that could work for a preschooler or a 40+-year-old? Something small enough to fit in a stocking that everyone will be fighting over using? Well, I’ve got you! The Nee Doh cube is the best $7 you will spend this season, I promise. I first discovered these in the “calm corner” of my daughter’s preschool classroom and couldn’t put it down. Then my husband experienced it one weekend when volunteering in said classroom on clean-up duty, and came home transfixed by it. So, I grabbed one for his recent birthday, and we’re all addicted to its firm, squishy squeeze. Just…trust me on this one!

From EHD: Since Black Friday sales are very much already here, we wanted to highlight our beloved long-term partner AllModern with some gift ideas for a loved one (or just you;)). Let’s get into!

Vases That Will Make You Look Chic VENTINA HANDMADE CERAMIC VASE $129 BLACK CERAMIC VASE $65

A cool vase is never not an awesome gift because it’s usually not something we prioritize buying for ourselves. We love both of these a lot! The painted one is a slightly different version of the one Jess has on her living room mantel. It’s bold without being loud. Then the shape of the black one is so good. It’s modern, cool, and so versatile.

Great Lamps RIALTA FLOOR LAMP $239 EDWARDS TABLE LAMP $159

Need a great lamp that’s a very good deal? These two fit the bill. Both are timeless with a Midcentury Modern feel and just look very sophisticated, but not over the top or cold. Either of these would elevate any room.

Cool Geometric Decor MONTICELLO CHAMPAGNE FLUTES $79 GEOMETRIC STORAGE BOXES $42

Ok, here are some great gift ideas! So often with champagne glassware, we head straight for a classic flute. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, wouldn’t drinking out of one of these be so fun and so great to display? Functional art, if you will:) Then, a little decorative storage box is another thing we typically don’t feel is a decor “necessity,” but it can add just a great punch of pattern, color, and/or texture! This green color palette is awesome and would work with a lot of other colors in a room.

For the Gardener PRESTON WATERING CAN $49 CORTEN STEEL SERIES PLANTER $133

A great watering can is an excellent gift for anyone with a plant, and this one is cool, fun, and modern! Then, if you were in love with Bower’s back house backyard makeover, you might remember these planters. They looked so good in her space and probably would in yours too;)

The Bestsellers AICHA COFFEE TABLE $429 ACCORDIAN CHRISTMAS TREES $76

Our final little duo is two of our current best sellers that are also on sale! That coffee table is so awesome, and we love that many of you now have it in your homes. Chic, cool, simple. Then, if you’ve been paying attention, we LOVE accordian Christmas trees and this set of 6 was used in The Carly Christmas shoot, so you can see for yourself how great they are:)

Head here for more great deals!

Thanks for stopping by, and see ya tomorrow. xx

My Favorite Fitness And Health Gifts – What “Works” (For Me) + My Function Health Review

The “wellness” industry will tell you that you need allllllll of the things, with honestly 60% of it being fake news (I should know, I’m a professional sucker). But there are some fitness and health apps/products that I love that do really work for me that could make good gifts for someone in your life, or you, looking to gather together the tools for 2026. None of this is sponsored, and very few affiliate links in this post, just good old-fashioned recommendations.

The Workouts That Work For Usfunction health reviewfrom: introducing our home gym reveal (+ my workoutroutines & complicated feelings about it all)

Brian and I both love Peloton, which at this point, you either have one or don’t want one, so no real selling there. But if you need extra motivation, might I suggest doing Sam Wu’s “Wicked” ride (so fun, I scream-sing the whole 1/2 hour and time fliiiiiieees by). Brian wants me to suggest the K-pop demon hunter ride (he loves it), and I do Cody’s rides. I also do Emma’s Hamilton rides every often (I know every lyric). The point is Cody and Sam are our favorites, and leaning into musicals makes the time fly so fast (would love to hear any of your favorite Peloton trainers or ride suggestions).

Brian – Fight Camp Boxing Bag And Appfrom: introducing our home gym reveal (+ my workoutroutines & complicated feelings about it all)

This is year 7 of Brian boxing with Fight Camp – a floor-mounted boxing bag that comes with a training app that kicks his ass. Don’t get this as a surprise for someone – it’s a big enough purchase (both physically and financially), but boy does he swear by it. Sometimes he just does 15 minutes and comes out drenched in sweat. Also great for getting out stress, obviously (Charlie does it now, too).

My Favorite Workout Apps

When I want to do a HITT workout or strength training, I have two apps I go between that I think would make great subscriptions (they are cheap, like 7-10$ a month, but like everything can add up).

Playbook – this has a ton of trainers to choose from, but I love Hannah Pointer. It’s 30-45 minutes a day, and since it’s not an audio app, I can listen to my favorite podcasts (Pivot and Armchair), and the time flies. I learn and sweat at the same time. Aaptiv – I’m on year 8 with this app, my favorite trainer being Akeem. This is an audio training app, with music included (or you use your own), they pump you up and guide you through it, and you choose from thousands of workouts based on time, trainer, body part, body weight versus dumbbells, yoga, etc. Many are also videos, but I prefer just audio. Honestly, a 20-minute Akeem workout does the job so fast. I like their pilates, but don’t love their yoga (but I haven’t tried any in a couple of years, so if you know of a great Aaptiv yoga instructor, let me know – I want it to be really challenging). The Now Famous Weighted Vest Walks

Y’all, not to brag, but I’ve been rucking for a few years now (remember that I was a dog walker in my 20s in New York, so walking is one of my best hobbies… ). With my bragging behind us, I have a lot of thoughts/feelings about weighted vests based on my vast vest experience.

If you are a first timer, just get a 15 OR 20 lb weighted vest. I started with a 12lb, but quickly it felt like nothing (I use it for chores now). I upgraded to 25lbs, which is aggressively heavy, and I do it, but at times it’s just too much. I wish I had a 20lb (but I’m not getting three). There are some that are adjustable, but I don’t love parts that I would lose. I like how simple mine are. But get 15, 18, or 20. No less or more.Go for the hills – flat walking with a weighted vest might not be as good for us as we think (possibly just wear and tear on joints, research is inconclusive). But up hills or stairs, it’s incredible for your leg muscles and bone density. My legs will get so tired and feel toned. My muscles feel it, especially when I push myself (I feel it that night for sure). And your heart rate won’t rise unless you do hills, so for the cardiovascular/heart workout, you’ll need to step it up, literally. It’s enjoyable!! Weighted walks with a podcast and a coffee (or a friend to dinner and back) is my favorite form of moving my body. I listen to Armchair Expert, anything Brenne Brown or Adam Grant, so much true crime (not the creepy, more the journalistic uncovering), and I literally look forward to it daily. Dogs certainly help with the motivation because it’s a win/win for the whole family when they get exercise. It’s the key to a long life. Sanjay Gupta carved into my brain the key to a long, healthy life: It’s simple – “Walk with a friend and talk about your feelings”. Essentially, moving your body (exercise), with someone you feel connected to (deep family-level-friendship) while processing your inner world (intimacy and emotional release/therapy) are the three main elements that will keep us healthy, holistically. Do it at the same time and add in nature (amongst trees!) and BOOM – the health SUPERFECTA!!!!My Daily Supplements

Ugh. This is where I’m a genuine sucker, so I won’t show you my supplement drawer. But there are a few things that I can say have been effective (because they are targeted).

Nutrafol – Like every person on the internet, I started Nutrafol after my hair started thinning and I was panicking. I started last May, and five months later, my new growth is incredible, and even my hairstylist is shocked. Running my fingers through my hair at my scalp feels so much thicker than it did months ago. It’s expensive ($80/month), which is why an annual membership would be a killer gift. Don’t wait til your hair is thinning (I wish I hadn’t). I used to have a sponsorship with them like 6 years ago, when my hair wasn’t in bad shape, and I liked it, but since it wasn’t a dire situation, the results were harder to physically see (and I think I was only on it for three months before COVID hit). This time around, I started out of dire need, and it’s clear that this stuff really works. To be transparent, right now I have some extensions that I clip in until the hair grows long again, btw. Hoping to be done with them and be back to long, healthy, thick hair in a year. But I’d vote Nutrafol for president.Vitamins, protein, creatine, and fiber. I definitely just try to eat whole foods to get all the good stuff, but of course, I have a dumb library of help. The options are endless, but I love the Grüns gummy vitamins (Athletic Greens hurt my stomach), and I’ve been buying Barebells and David for protein bars and Floura for fiber bars. Zero spons – just stuff I love that is kinda expensive, therefore good presents (I would love them, BTH). I also just started taking hydrogen pills, which medical researchers swear by, but you can’t really feel anything different. More to come as I just started testing a lot more…The “Function Health” Test

The algorithm gods finally broke me down, and I bought the Function Health full blood tests for me and Brian – and I’m so happy that I did. It’s expensive (starts at $500) with a lot of add-ons (like early cancer detection). You get your blood drawn three times over a few weeks, once during your period, to ensure that alllllll the tests are accurate. Then you get your results through a portal, which is extremely user-friendly and intuitive. These are tests that no GP or insurance will do unless you are sick, which I’m not.

What Does Function Health Test For?

I tested literally all the organs, proteins, cells, hormone health, thyroid, vitamin levels, immune health, cancer detection, gut, heart, liver, kidney, sensitivities, and allergies. All the things. Many are part of the $500 package, but many are “add-ons” that, of course, add up to way more (I spent $1,000).

What Were My Results?

My results were generally less awesome than I would have predicted, even though I have zero symptoms and a lot of energy. Turns out I have a lot of heart inflammation (specific proteins detected) and very high cholesterol (which I knew, but I didn’t know about the heart inflammation, and combined was terrifying). Did it give me anxiety? Yes. For a bit. But then I felt empowered. Since it’s not dire, everything is reversible, and I’m now seeing a functional medicine doctor who I never would have booked before, who has me on a lot of supplements to lower the inflammation without hardcore medicine (my lifestyle is healthy, but now even healthier). I love that it’s an online portal and I can retest at any time (I’m testing now for food allergies, which I didn’t do the first time around). You can 100% get obsessed with it in a bad way, and people with health anxiety might not love it. But I am finding it really empowering and finally taking charge of prevention.

I haven’t had a GP since we moved here (which is so dumb), so I was overwhelmed with health-guilt/anxiety that I wasn’t doing any preventative work (kids will do that to you – I want to be alive for grandkids!). I couldn’t get in to any good doctor for MONTHS, so I always gave up. This was a great way to check a box on my own terms. I also want to recognize that I know this is for privileged people due to the cost (insurance doesn’t cover it), and I wish it were available for everyone. The guy at Quest Diagnostic Lab mentioned that it’s like $15k worth of lab tests for $500, so they are definitely losing money on just the OG program, meaning that there is likely an alternative business model – either developing future supplements or selling our information for research. I guess I just don’t really care because I like the platform so much and appreciate knowing the results that I wouldn’t have gotten through mainstream healthcare with no symptoms. I’m very excited to re-test in March and see how all these holistic supplements have changed the heart inflammation (before I go on a statin and get even more hardcore about diet and exercise).

Saunas, Redlight Therapy, And Cold Plunges…

Now to the stuff that is definitely specific and luxurious – i.e., not gifts for anyone. But here’s my experience:

from: all the cold plunge questions, answered: our cold plunge review and what we love about it

Cold Plunge – I’ve always been a polar plunger in lakes, and I’m still a cold plunger, mostly for mood boosting and stress relief. I actually do it way more in the winter to get the dopamine hit during the more depressing times of year. I have a Plunge, which has worked great. Listen, you have to do it frequently, or it’s 100% not worth the expense of the product and the energy. If you don’t like jumping in cold lakes, you will not all of a sudden like cold plunging. Be real with yourself (for a lot of people, it’s torture, but Brian, I, and Elliot love it).

from: is my sauna blanket still effective after three years?? here’s my review

Sauna Blanket – I laid in this 3-4 nights a week during lockdown – I love it. You can lie in it while watching TV, you sweat a ton, burn calories, and of course, boost your mood. The only drawback is that you sweat so much that you have to shower, and since I have curly hair, I can’t go to bed with wet hair, so I then have to dry my hair. That was fine when the kids went to bed at 8, but now that they go to bed at 9:30, I find that I don’t have the time to shower/dry afterwards if I want to be asleep by 10. That’s all to say that it’s an expensive purchase, so make sure it fits into your lifestyle. I started modifying and just having my legs in and not doing the full 50 minutes, so that I didn’t have to wash my hair because I didn’t get quite so hot. But I just pulled it back out for winter, and I’m excited to get back in while watching Survivor with the kids (we are binging all 40 seasons, lol). And something VERY exciting, here’s a 20% off sitewide code – BFCM2025

from: is my sauna blanket still effective after three years?? here’s my review

Red Light Mask – Every year, I say that I’m going to do this twice a week because you can’t get any results unless you are consistent. And yet that lasts a couple of months. All the evidence says overwhelmingly that red light therapy so great for your skin. Maybe 2026 is the year I do it all year long. It’s a fantastic gift. This is the Higher Dose Red Light Skin Starter Kit that includes a “mask” for your neck and chest, too. Jess has this Dr. Gross one and loves it.

Red Light Hat – We know that red light therapy is meant to be really good for your skin and now scalp. I’m getting this for Brian and I both to share – so easy to wear while I work from home, and it promises hair regrowth, which I really can’t get enough of these days.

More Fun Products NIKE ZOOM VOMERO 5 $170 NIKE VEST $110

My favorite shoes (for cross training, walking, and honestly just to walk around all day – lightweight and extremely comfortable). The vest is really cute and perfectly covers my weighted vest on my walks.

WEIGHTED VEST $29 HEADPHONES $55

This is basically my walking formula – the vest and what I think are the best headphones (the charge lasts hours and hours, and they never fall out of my ears – no mic though).

from: introducing our home gym reveal (+ my workoutroutines & complicated feelings about it all) DUMBBELL CONVERTER $135

This bar and kettlebell converter is really awesome, especially if you don’t have a ton of room for tons of gym equipment.

ARCHED YOGA MAT $99 PICKLE BALL PADDLE & BALL SET $94

Arched yoga mats are all the rage, folks (I haven’t tried this one, but people love it), and if you know someone who is pickleball curious, this set is cute (there is a pattern on the other side).

KEEN H2 SANDALS $130 WOMENS LONG JACKET $65

I’m SO excited that Keens are having a moment – they are a PNW staple for all of our water sports (rafting, hiking through rivers – lightweight, feet stay cool, and so comfortable). And my Columbia jacket is on a huge sale and is my favorite lightweight but highly warm jacket (with patented technology). I have it in black but wish I had bought it in this dark burgundy.

OURA RING $500 THERAGUN $160

For a splurgier health enthusiast, people are either obsessed with these (above) or they aren’t. It might be worth a conversation with your fitness friend/family member to see if they are into it.

GRUNS VITAMINS $65 NUTRAFOL HAIR SUPPLEMENT $79+ SALAD POD $25

Vitamins are a weird gift to give, I’m just saying, I like these a lot. Nutrafol hair supplements are an absolute game changer for me – I have five months of new growth now to prove it (Brian just got on it). And for the to-go salad enthusiast (Brian), this pod is extremely convenient.

I could link up a ton of clothes, but they are so specific to body type and performance, and I don’t have a ton of new ones that are linkable right now. I love Nike shoes, P.E. Nation or Lululemon tights, and a lot of Vuori and Free People. Maybe I’ll do a fashion post in January:)

Thanks for listening to my weighted vest rant, and if you have Function Health experience, let me know in the comments. I’m also open to doing a deeper dive on my results (and follow-up results) in the new year if you guys are interested. xx

Dressing Up Holiday Sweaters For A Party (While Still Being Comfortable)

This year I have two non-kid holiday parties to go to – like with other IRL grownup women, in stylish homes! I don’t think I’ve needed to dress up in anything beyond a holiday sweater since I lived in LA, and I miss it (we host 2-3 holiday parties/potlucks, but they are all in our home and with a ton of kids so more in the “ugly sweaters and slippers” realm which is fun in its own way). So yes, I get to dress up a bit, but I still need to be comfortable while sitting, and I still live in Portland (meaning, it’s inherently casual – no body-con sequin dresses needed). So in my attempt to be comfortable, casual, but cute in a slightly more cocktail attire way, I put together a few looks with “holiday-adjacent” clothes. Kaitlin wanted to shoot this with flash, like I’m at a party, which sounded fun to me, so you are about to see me fake drinking ginger beer by myself mid-laughter…I made some choices, folks!

Holiday Sweaters

Sweater | Skirt | Tights

This first one was Brian’s favorite – I hadn’t heard this level of outfit enthusiasm in a while (probably because I mostly wear sweatshirts and barrel pants). It’s definitely giving Martha in the 80s with the preppy sweater and bows (with the skin showing through the gaps). Then I paired it with a tiny pleated skirt that is so well-tailored in a plaid that feels really me. I suppose it’s my attempt towards the “Ralph Lauren Christmas,” but in a way that fits my style more. I bought the skirt and tights from Aritzia and am really loving the burgundy with the green/blue plaid. I bought the shoes from a consignment shop like 10 years ago, so sadly, I can’t link them. Oh, and I’m wearing a large in the sweater (the only size left at my local Target), which fits great as it’s pretty cropped.

Sweater | Skirt | Boots

This sweater is the softest of all of them, and I obviously like that the blue can be carried from fall through winter. The fair isle style of it gives “holiday,” for sure. But man is it comfortable, soft, and warm. 10/10. I paired it with a Sezane wool skirt and boots I’ve had for a few years (both still available). My concern here is if we have to remove our shoes (which is typical in Oregon homes). This outfit doesn’t work without the boots. Not sure what the current “house party” protocol is for shoes on/off…my feelings are that if it’s a casual party with a ton of kids, fine… shoes off – but if it’s any sort of adults-only dress-up party, shoes should be allowed, right?

Sweater | Pants

Another “conservative up top, a bit scandalous on the bottom” look. This cable knit puffed sleeve sweater has a really good cut – it’s wider at the bottom but still short, which is nice for the proportions (big puffed sleeves + long is just too much volume for me). I’ve had the pants for a while, and they are questionable for sure – super tight and flare-y at the bottom, so styling is key here to not look super cheesy.

I think this outfit could use a pop of burgundy – maybe a bow in my hair or shoes? But I felt good in it, the pants are splurgy (but are on sale right now!) and very flattering.

Cape | Skirt | Tights

Here she is, super sophisticated! A new company named Alice Walk reached out to send a few things with no obligation. Usually, I decline, not wanting more stuff I might not wear. But this cape is so beautiful that I wanted to see it in person – and it’s extremely well-made and pretty. It comes in a few solid colors as well, but of course, I was drawn to this pattern. It’s definitely splurgy (think Frank & Eileen vibes), but for someone with an office job that wants to impress, I think this is fantastic to wear around a city.

This is my first foray into the slip skirt (I know this trend has been around for a while, but this one stood out to me). It’s a gorgeous blue with black lace, and with the tights underneath, showed no bumps (this was my fear with these silk/satin slip dresses -they can show everything if not well made). I picked this up at Nordstrom, not realizing how expensive it is, but I know I’ll wear it as it’s easy to pair with sweaters for a pretty/sexy/sophisticated look.

Cardigan | Skirt | Tights

I was so comfortable in this outfit and felt pulled together in a way that I usually am not. The cardigan (also from Alice Walk) is so pretty, soft, and well-made, with pretty horn buttons. I really liked this tonal look, with the burgundy tights giving it a bit of an edge.

Pearl Necklace | Gold Pendant Necklace

I think for the party, I would likely add more layered jewelry, but this felt like a solid holiday house party outfit that checks all the boxes while being so comfortable.

Cardigan | Shirt (similar) | Leather Skirt | Tights

A fantastic burgundy cardigan that says holiday, without being bright red. I added a pop of black and white stripes, leather, and sheer black tights. BTW, I’m on a hair journey and trying not to get any highlights (it’s been a full year since I last did), so I’m doing just root touchups for now. I like being less bright blonde, but these photos are making me want to just get a few pops of brighter blonde around my face…

Sweater | Skirt | Tights | Belt | Boots

Another holiday adjacent sweater (fair isle) that is so comfy and easy to wear. I paired it with the J.Crew mini skirt, burgundy tights, and boots, but obviously so easy to dress down (leggings, denim, anything). I’m wearing an XS, so it’s pretty oversized. But super soft and lightweight – so easy to layer over or under.

Let me know if you’d want some casual/comfortable NYE looks. We always go to a family house party, but I typically wear something sparkly because I’m extra like that (while still being comfy). xx
