March is Endometriosis awareness month, and with that in mind I'm sharing a couple of videos. While these aren't directly speaking about Endometriosis, they are about a condition that many with Endo (including myself) have long struggled with: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a neuroimmune disease.

Notice: This video might be triggering if you find it true to your own experience. I personally found it extremely validating...that kind of validating where you cry deep from your gut, letting out pain that you've long carried and buried. That kind of validating where you watch something on repeat, just to hear that confirmation one more time. Again. And again. Because it was denied to you for so damn long.

If you (thankfully) can't personally identify with this video, I encourage you to watch it anyway, to educate yourself about what your friend, family, or co-worker may be going through. Your understanding could mean the world to them.

This video was posted in 2018 by Elizabeth Sparrow. She said, "The Golden Girls is my favourite TV show of all time... Between 1985 and 1992, the seven seasons covered a range of topics, all of which are still relevant today. It was created by US TV producer Susan Harris. Susan suffered during the 1980s and, I believe, is still suffering now with what is termed predominantly in the US as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/neuroimmune disease. The historical waters pertaining to said disease are murky in the extreme, and there is a wealth of information on the internet about its thought origin and the subsequent damage caused by medical professionals... Such neglect and life-threatening abuse is still ongoing today, twenty-nine years after this storyline aired... AWARENESS of this brutal, unforgiving, unrelenting and cruelly debilitating disease is paramount, in order to move forwards with EFFECTIVE treatment.

I have selected the relevant sections from this special two-part episode Sick and Tired, from Season Five, which aired in 1989, to highlight how much HASN’T changed, as well as draw attention to the poignant words spoken by Dorothy throughout, and most especially at the end.

I am astonished that this episode was written and played on such a popular show so long ago. What a validation. And how sad that things are basically still the same. I wish I'd seen this 20+ years ago, when I was 17, 14, even 12, when I started getting hit with this and other invisible diseases that came along with it.

Here is the link to the video. I also strongly encourage watching this TED talk by Jennifer Brea. In my own multi-decade journey of living with misunderstood chronic conditions, this video from Brea was one of the most cathartic things I had ever viewed, along with her documentary Unrest, which I also highly recommend.

Hopefully tides turn and invisible illness becomes better understood...and even when it is not understood, there is at the very least less dismissal or blaming patients for their conditions. Ahead of that, awareness is vital. To that end, as Elizabeth Sparrow noted, Please share FAR and WIDE.

Today is 10 years since my sister passed away. I feel gratitude for having known her in this life, and that she still tries to reach me from wherever she's at these days. I don't pretend to know what her existence or experience is, but when she breaks through the grief and doubt, I'm always left feeling love, humor, astonishment, or all of the above.

A friend thoughtfully sent me flowers, without knowing what would appear in the bouquet. These colors "look" like my sister, if that makes sense. They're the rich colors of her bedroom when she was a teen and I just always associated that type of palette with her. They make me think of the tv series Friends, and my sibs and I are constantly baffled by how much Jennifer Aniston reminds us of her.

For some reason, pink roses also always make me think of her. I'm not sure why, but even when she was alive in this world I had that association, especially when I would see wild roses. Maybe it was something about her beauty and untamed spirit. I didn't think to include that in the symbols reference in my book, but this bouquet reminded me of that.

The prominence of carnations here is also not lost on me. For anyone who attended my book launch party this weekend, you'll probably know what I'm referring to. There is a story I read from my book The Secret Psychic where I shared about a repeated vision I kept having of carnations. I never used to like this flower, but since that persistent vision they hold so much significant meaning for me now. Amy was a part of that vision and the message was one of celebration and homecoming.

So when these lovely flowers arrived it was a bit like saying "hi" to her at the front door. Still a wild spirit, an absolute beauty.

This was my first time using Facebook Live, and I found the setup to be very not intuitive, ha! You might have even seen me doing test videos leading up to the weekend, which I'm very glad I did, because I found that it worked on one computer, but not the other, and in one web browser, but not the one that I first tried. Shout out to my sister and husband for their help in testing things out with me! And if you were there live, thank you again for your patience as I was figuring things out in real time. I'm also grateful that the link didn't drop. Once we got rolling, things went smoothly overall. Phew!

After two years of anticipation, it's finally The Secret Psychic's book birthday! But the story of this book began much longer ago and there are all kinds of emotions that come with today's celebration.

I've shared before how there have been many signs along the way that my older sister, Amanda, has had a hand in the creation of this book. She passed away almost ten years ago and has been whispering her messages from the other side ever since. Learning to recognize and embrace the natural occurrence of spirit communication is a big part of what the book is about, and as if to prove the point I could feel her working with me throughout the entire process. Extra synchronistic events acted as exclamations along the way, getting her point across.

One example of this includes the cover. During production the publisher came to me asking if they might use some of my artwork for the design. This was something I had absolutely not anticipated, as I know use of author-provided imagery can sometimes get complicated, so is often avoided. Because of this it wasn't a direction I had even considered they might go with. In my surprised stupor, I didn't meaningfully think things through, and I just sent all the imagery that I had. Yet, they ended up choosing the one painting that was pivotal to a key story that I tell in the book.

As soon as they shared their decision I remembered the painting's significance (which is explained more in the book). Looking at it through this new lens, her level of inclusion was just incredible. Example: that green fabric at the top of the cover? That's material I pulled from her sewing stash. It just blows my mind that I can see her symbolically right there like a hidden signature behind my own name.

Simultaneously, I also remembered the fact that my sister used to always say that one day we would write a book together and it would include my artwork. When this realization hit I was mouth-hanging-open shocked. I'm still left in awe.

Another example of feeling as though Amanda has been orchestrating things behind the scenes came as I was actively writing the book. Years before, after her death, I had been writing what I thought would result in a memoir. Story after story of her and my shared experience unfolded on the page, but eventually I set that work aside, assuming it was something that had been an exercise in processing my own grief and spiritual experience. But as I was writing The Secret Psychic, in certain instances I would suddenly remember select stories that I had previously written down, realizing they would be excellent examples of what I was sharing about in this new work. As each story fell into place, feelings of joy and closure at finally being able to share her experience and these amazing stories were felt as things she was imparting to me.

And yet another example is the significance of this particular day. Exactly one decade ago today, I saw my sister alive and smiling in this world for the last time. Several years ago I started thinking of what I could even begin to do to try to honor her at this ten year mark. I had been formulating ideas for putting together a gallery show of the various paintings I'd done in remembrance and celebration of her over the years, but when COVID hit those ideas seemed dashed.

To be able to present this book (that is so much of me and so much of my sister put together) today is better than any other tribute to her that I could have imagined.

I know these thoughts of loss can easily get caught up in grief. While it's important to acknowledge and process those emotions, today is really so much of a celebration. I know that's what Amanda would have wanted us to focus on, and she would be (is!) incredibly excited about this achievement. To remember that, here is a video that was shot exactly ten years ago (me at bottom middle, Amanda at top right corner, my dog Jasper - who is also mentioned in the book - front and center). As it so happens, it is a birthday video, which is crazily appropriate. It pops up in my social media every year, and I am grateful for it. I have never laughed so hard in my life and will always remember literally rolling on the floor next to her, with tears streaming down our faces, because life in that moment was simple, a celebration, and so absolutely fantastic.
