Between book blues?
Do you ever wonder if writers get between book blues?
Maybe some do, but I don’t.
Especially when the book in question was as much of beast as Undead Impact was. But at least it’s finally off with my editor, so… it’ll be coming your way relatively soon.
For real, this time.
That said, I’m not writing but still working.
I started the outline for book two of my Fire in the Sky series, aka Ravaged Skies. If you’re dying to know what happened to poor Cody, I’m working on it.
I’m also doing some research on White Nationalism, which may or may not factor into the rest of that series. At this point I’m not sure, so I’m doing some research.
To whit, I started a book called Strange People on the Hill last night. It’s about a tiny little town not too far from me—Berkeley Springs, West Virginia—and is an account of what happened when a prominent White Nationalist movement moved in.
I’m only forty pages and so far, it’s a fact is stranger than fiction kind of thing.
So, white nationalism research, happy days! Not. But a writer’s gotta do what a writer’s gotta do.

Dogsitting or writing retreat?
This weekend I’m dogsitting for a dear friend. Not only do I get quality time with one of my favorite fuzzy faces on the planet, but I also have a rare stretch of uninterrupted time to work on Undead Impact.
Pals… we are in the home stretch. Really.
I’ve already sent the manuscript to my alpha reader (!!). While she has it, I’m doing line edits on my end, and for the first time in a long time the finish line is officially in sight.
I know this book has taken longer than any of us expected, and I’m so grateful for your patience.

Time slips away, or does it?
I don’t know about you, but I feel perpetually behind.
Behind with this book (still). Behind on the biz side of writer stuff. Behind on making doctor’s appointments and PT appointments, in part because PT will just take up more of my time!
But, deep breath.
I’m back from a recent week spent in Seattle.
I was asked to speak at a book club, a first for me. Squee! It was really fun. I was surprised that I ended up talking about being a writer a bit more than about the book, but everyone seemed happy at the end.
Since I was going to be there, I was able to conduct on-the-ground research for a greater Undead Age World story that I want to set in Seattle.
Because, you know, the list of ideas for stories I want to write isn’t already longer than my arm.
This particular idea was sparked by a prior visit to the Space Needle.
Added bonus: my favorite research assistant was able to join me (that’s my husband, who is a really good minion and story brainstorming partner).
Bigger added bonus: that on-the-ground research confirmed that my Space Needle idea will actually work.
Yet another added bonus was spending some time with family in the area.
So… that’s the latest. Now off to resume editing Undead Impact.
Go easy on yourself, dear reader. Or—as Jennifer Stone used to say—if you can’t go easy, go as easy as you can.

We Got a Cat (Again)
We got another cat, which was not the plan—at all.
The employee of a friend passed away unexpectedly and his cat needed a home. My friend took her in short-term, since he already has three cats. Quite sensibly, he posted on Facebook to see what the interwebs could do.
My husband and I are planning a twenty-years-in-the-making move to Europe in a few years, and we already have two rambunctious dogs and two senior cats. I should have scrolled past that post. What I did was take a screenshot and send it to my husband.
Because (drumroll, please) that’s how I roll. Which is to say, I’m an idiot. Adding another pet is objectively not smart. That fact went out the window, because cute fuzzy kitty in need.
Kitty’s new name is Loulee, after Leeloo from The Fifth Element, because obviously. She is beautiful, affectionate, and still not integrated with the other pets. It turns out Buttercup is an absolute a-hole and really pissed off about a new sister, so we’re taking it super slow.
I’m deep into revisions on Undead Impact. It’d be kind of cool if Leelou takes up the mantle of Unhelpful Author Cat. The job has been vacant since my beloved Nerys died unexpectedly.
Maybe Leelou could re-imagine the role to be a Moderately Unhelpful Author Cat. I could pass on the lounging on the keyboard but am totally cool with every scene I write requiring close supervision. I’d be okay with her laying over my wrists while I type, like Nerys used to do, except that Leelou is a much bigger cat. All that would accomplish is giving me carpal tunnel.
So far, the jury’s out on the Unhelpful Author Cat thing. Mostly, she watches.
Which feels about right for a cat watching me write a book about survival, unexpected responsibility, and the way life throws in new variables whether the timing is good or not. Or maybe especially so, because it’s never good timing when zombies are closing in.
So, we didn’t plan on another cat but we’ve got one. No one in my books ever plans on the apocalypse and things usually work out.
Mostly.
Unless they die.
A new cat feels very low stakes when I think about it that way.
A friend once told me, “Anne, things always work out in the end. If they haven’t worked out, you just haven’t reached the end yet.”
In the end, I’m sure it will work out. It’s just gonna take a little time to get there.

I'll be back
Hey everybody!
I’ve decided to restart my blog in 2026.
Why?
Well, I miss checking in to let you know what’s going on in my world that you can get direct from me.
I will start posting in January. But please, don’t get mad if I’m not exactly on the dot. I’m not an on the dot kind of person, in case you haven’t noticed. ;-)
Anyway, that’s all for now. It’s 10:30 a.m. and I still have to walk my long-suffering doggies, so until next time…
