A classic latchkey kid of the ‘70s and ‘80s, J. Allen Hood was raised in Reno, Nevada, the single child of a swing shift casino waitress who wanted him to be the next Fred Astaire.

A brief stint in college convinced him to join the military where he spent the next several years on active duty in U.S. Army Special Operations.

After receiving his honorable discharge, he embarked on a series of entrepreneurial and marital adventures which resulted in him losing everything more than once. For the foreseeable future, he will undoubtedly continue to make mistakes, building character along the way.

“It doesn’t matter where you find yourself, self-pity does nothing. It doesn’t make things better. It doesn’t make you rich, get you a girlfriend or resurrect your dog.”
J. Allen Hood, Conduct Becoming A Man: Handbook On How to Behave and Why

“And unless you want to weaken them, don’t carry the people you care about.”

“It’s called temptation and not opportunity for a reason.”

“Half of us are born male, yet no one is born a man. It takes effort and determination. You don’t luck into it, you can’t buy it and it doesn’t matter who your dad is. You decide to conduct yourself a certain way. You take the hard right over the easy wrong. You earn it.”

“All that aside, assigning blame won’t improve your results anyway. It only feeds your internal sympathy engine. You’ll continue to do poorly, but probably at a faster pace.”
