Ngl, after understanding the context, the which is who, and the whole geography and the world, I find reading GoTM even more enjoyable and fascinating. Picking up the subtle hints of many occurences and obscure description of certain characters (which we know who already because we've read them before) make the reading experience even more entertaining.

Yes, I was intimidated by the sheer volume and by the saying that everyone says this is a hard read. Non stop reading and it took me 16 days to finish it.

What I Like:
1. The writing. Erikson is the embodiment of "show don't tell". The application of the mantra is at its finest in this book. The fighting scenes are also one of the best there is; detail, elaborate, yet still manage to be mysterious and uncertain. I can't skim past through the pages (maybe that's why it took me so long to read it), but still I'm on edge at every words. Desperately to find hints of what tf is going on, more likely.
2. The characters. Again, show don't tell. There's no outright explanation about a character's motive. I can only see them from what they say and what they do, sometimes from what they think. Even from that, I can't quite grasp it. Even with this way of characterization, you can feel the difference between all of them (and trust me there are many) and not one is quite the same.
3. The worldbuilding and magic system are different level here, again, without explanation. We are thrown in the middle of a war and conspiracy, and all of sudden there are another battle which involves mages and magical lord.
4. Ok. So, the main plot is basically there's this Empress Laseen who wants to conquer all the Free Cities. She sets to conquer Pale, and now she sets to take Darujhistan. It's an invasion, basically, in which we are thrown into in the very first chapter.
5. Oh my I love most of the characters here and their unusual names: Tattersail (not her), Whiskeyjack, Kruppe (the best), Crokus, Mammot, Rope, Oponn, my favorite duo Quick Ben and Kalam, my second favorite duo Rallick Nom and Murillio, also the badass Rope of House of Shadow.
6. Anomander Rake. Dragnipur. Anomander Rake. Dragnipur. Anomander Rake.

What I Don't Like:
1. Even in an epic fantasy in this scale, there's this instalove. I hate the timeline where someone who is together for only a week suddenly got a lifetime devotion toward the other person. It's just a small thing, and it's not even shown in the book, but I know what happened between them and I want to slap them to their senses.

Basically the strength of this book is in its writing. When you are immersed in the narrative and enjoying the ride, you can pick up the scattered plot eventually, and in the last battle, you'll realize "Oh, this is what everything all about." This book is so ambitious and it delivers. I can't wait to see what will happen next even though I can't quite spell Kurald Galain properly.
