It is bizarre, in a very good way. The first book already started off with space battles and there are a lot of military and mathematics things going on. It then added with a very strange world building. At first I was convinced that it is an easy space opera, but it doesn't mention any planet name where they live. They simply refer their world as Hexarchate (only God and YHL knows what that is) and calendar system. It involves six factions high and low (sounds like Divergent but much more advance *cough* writing skill). The people who are not in factions are not hunted down, they're just left as they are. I don't really get the notion what is going on outside the factions, because the books focus on the battles against the heretics. The military center is Kel Command, for the Kel is the military faction (most known for their obedience). The leaders of each faction called Hexarch. The spaceships are called moths (there are many kinds, such as boxmoths, silkmoths, cindermoths). I have difficulty in picturing them, to be honest, but my brain knows that they are so amazing. In short, the worldbuilding is overwhelming.

The characters are... well, if the author is good at writing, they will good at having brilliant characters. What I love is their sexual preferences. Being LGBTQ is not something very uncommon in this book. Shuos Jedao, for example, casually saying that his best male friend is also his casual lover and it's not very weird for them to kiss on the lips. Kel Cheris is casually thinking to bed one of the female Generals. Shuos Mikodez and his younger brother is sometimes also lovers. YHL writes them with the air of nonchalant, which makes me believe that being incestuous is not wrong. The sexual deviance is not forced to be a plot device, it is just there as normal as a character eat their breakfast. I believe that it is not disturbing, it is not weird, it doesn't even feel immoral. That kind of writing skill is beyond criticism.

Not to mention the battle strategy and tactics, with mathematics calculation. I don't understand half the book, when Shuos Jedao once again unleashed and threatening the hexarchate. But I care. I don't understand the calendrical heresy, but I care. I want to know more. I just can't stop. I read one chapter, and I don't understand most of the cunning plot, but I care.

It is a very good book and I'm glad that I'm not too late to discover this gem. Now, I have to wait for several month to get a grip on the third. YHL is good at worldbuilding and characterization but he doesn't forget to forge interesting plot and story, which makes his works addictive.
