After The Storm

Like weather, life is unpredictable. Some days you may get sunshine – and others you’ll get a storm. I got hit by a hurricane when I miscarried what would have been our 3rd child. Coming out of the darkness that engulfed me was difficult, but thanks to a lot of prayer and support I made it through.

But what happens after the storm has passed? Well – if you’re lucky – you get a rainbow. A term often used amongst families who’ve experienced the loss of a pregnancy is ‘rainbow baby’. It’s used to described the successful pregnancy you have after a loss that results in a healthy baby – the blessing/rainbow after the storm you endured.

As you may know if you’ve read a previous blog post by me, my husband and I have decided to be done having children and enjoy the completeness of our family as it is now. I don’t regret this decision at all – in fact, it’s been such a relief! All the pressure and fear of trying again has been washed away and replaced with living in the moment of who we are now.

One thing I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the lingering question in my mind… so does this mean I don’t get my rainbow? If we aren’t going to have anymore kids, that means I’ll never experience that feeling of having our rainbow baby. Our journey of creating life just ends in tragedy.

Or does it? You see, the first thing I have to tell myself is that even if we were to have another child, there is no replacing the one we lost. That hole will always be there.

The next thing I had to realize? I can be my own rainbow! The rainbow baby is a new life that comes in and adds color and life to a dark situation, but what if I can find different kinds of colorful blessings?

As I turn my thoughts inwards and ask myself “what does your rainbow look like I see that there are so many things in life I’d like to accomplish, see, and do. God-willing, with a more positive mindset I can journey towards a fulfillment that comes from within and doesn’t hinge on anyone else but my own personal strength.

Beginning my journey as an author took a courage that I didn't previously possess; however, now that I've made it through another storm I feel my strength growing. I know that more will come my way, but that doesn't mean I will ever quit.

If you’re reading this, I know without asking that you’ve been through your own personal storms – perhaps you’re going through it now. I want you to know that you have the power within you to make it through and find your rainbow – whatever that is.

And do you want to know the most amazing thing about rainbows – contrary to old beliefs – they have no end!

“Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” – Genesis‬ ‭9:16
