Lydia Schröder grew up in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
An architect by profession, she lived and practised in Namibia for eighteen years. With her doctor husband, Anthon, she travelled extensively throughout Namibia, both for work and leisure.
In 2016, when their youngest child left the house, they closed their practices, put their earthly belongings in storage and set themselves adrift.
For the next couple of years they lived out of their suitcases, spending at least three months per year driving through the entire Namibia while Anthon did rural medicine along the way.
