My fondest childhood memories are of time spent with my grandmother, and roaming the Southern Illinois woods and fields with my cousins. Our ancestors include many storytellers. This tradition was continued by Grandma, and the WWII adventures added by my uncles. These stories contributed to my fascination with history and desire to preserve family experiences. In 1967, my educational path was interrupted by a two-year diversion into the Army. This detour, which included stationing at The Pentagon and occasional assignments at the White House, proved transformative. A day or two later, I would revisit both versions. At that point, invariably, I would be unable to determine which version was better, or if both should be donated to the paper recycle bin. I found two sources of consolation, if not cure. In reading the comments and advice of experienced authors, all had experienced this malady. Also, one of my cousins, Roger Darnell, called me on a regular basis during this period. Roger has considerable writing experience and genuinely understood the frustration and misery I was suffering. Our chats were enormously helpful in preventing me from throwing the entire manuscript into an unused drawer and abandoning the project entirely. Unfortunately, I did not discover any magic cures for writer's block. I turned my attention to the necessities of daily life, as a means of postponing complete insanity, and eventually the mental paralysis dissipated.(less)

War wound

Four of my mother's brothers served in the Armed Forces during WWII. When they came home, their uniforms were hung in the closet of the spare bedroom at Grandma and Grandpa's home. The uniforms stayed in that closet throughout my childhood. This tidbit serves as explanation for why, when I returned from the Army twenty-three years later, I did exactly the same thing with my uniforms.
