Marc Grossberg is an observer and a listener. He has a passion for his family, friends and clients, and for books that entertain and provoke him. He has practiced law in his native Houston for over fifty years.

Somehow he overcame being a Board Certified tax lawyer and one of the Best Lawyers in America© to write The Best People. Marc is a proud product of the Houston public schools, the University of Houston and the University of Texas School of Law.

He lives in the NOW and goes wherever his “green light” tells him the intersection might be interesting.

I read What Makes Sammy Run and after that I read all his novels in the order they were written. His screenplay for A Face In The Crowd (1057) - in fact the whole film - is wonderful and if you saw it today you would think it was written for 2016. (less)

Living In The Now – My Magical Mystery Tour: Tales of Manhattan

TALES OF MANHATTAN
July 1, 2015 Wednesday

(Please read Part 1 here.)

Standing outside in the line for a taxi, I talked to an attractive black woman. She said she was a storyteller and she worked with The Moth. I said I listened to The Moth on NPR in Houston. She told me The Moth was presenting a program on July 16. We exchanged contact information so I could get a link.

A nice taxi driver took me to t

“I would think he knows what goes around comes around." "Lordy," Prentice thought. "If so, you have a hellacious coming around sooner or later.”
Marc Grossberg, The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors

“Justice should be blind, but not blind with greed. The people must have faith in the fundamental fairness and impartiality of our system of justice if we are to have order in our society. Those who make a mockery of it must not go unpunished.”
Marc Grossberg, The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors

“Large firms are interesting places, Mr. Moran. They are their own universe, and the masters of that universe are all-knowing, even when the information is about one of their own.”
Marc Grossberg, The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors

“I felt something quieter, but no less consuming. Shame. Humiliation is what you feel in front of others; shame is what you feel alone. Shame is harder to shake.”
A.J. Rich, The Hand That Feeds You

“Your self…is other people, all the people you're tied to, and it's only a thread.”
Tom Wolfe, The Bonfire of the Vanities

“One of the few freedoms that we have as human beings that cannot be taken away from us is the freedom to assent to what is true and to deny what is false. Nothing you can give me is worth surrendering that freedom for. At this moment I'm a man with complete tranquillity...I've been a real estate developer for most of my life, and I can tell you that a developer lives with the opposite of tranquillity, which is perturbation. You're perturbed about something all the time. You build your first development, and right away you want to build a bigger one, and you want a bigger house to live in, and if it ain't in Buckhead, you might as well cut your wrists. Soon's you got that, you want a plantation, tens of thousands of acres devoted solely to shooting quail, because you know of four or five developers who've already got that. And soon's you get that, you want a place on Sea Island and a Hatteras cruiser and a spread northwest of Buckhead, near the Chattahoochee, where you can ride a horse during the week, when you're not down at the plantation, plus a ranch in Wyoming, Colorado, or Montana, because truly successful men in Atlanta and New York all got their ranches, and of course now you need a private plane, a big one, too, a jet, a Gulfstream Five, because who's got the patience and the time and the humility to fly commercially, even to the plantation, much less out to a ranch? What is it you're looking for in this endless quest? Tranquillity. You think if only you can acquire enough worldly goods, enough recognition, enough eminence, you will be free, there'll be nothing more to worry about, and instead you become a bigger and bigger slave to how you think others are judging you.”
Tom Wolfe, A Man in Full

“You have a conscience, and a conscience is a valuable attribute, but not if it begins to make you think you were to blame for what is far beyond the scope of your responsibility.”
Philip Roth, Nemesis

“Margot Shears says to Paddy - on lawyers crossing the line: "You really think I would believe you did those things in furtherance of your duty to your client? Paddy, Paddy, Paddy. Shame on you. Nobody sins for somebody else.”
