What’s so special about Tibet?

When my husband suggested we go visit Tibet, I was like: why, man? I didn’t know much about Buddhism at the time. I was young and didn’t have a lot of patience with ritualistic religions that espoused sitting for hours to empty the mind. Ho hum.
 
But hubby was very eager. So I said yes. And then he spent about a month researching how to alleviate altitude sickness. Apparently, some visitors to Tibet got brain edema or pulmonary edema and had to be helicoptered out immediately. Wow, I thought,...

Mind-body control, anyone?

A few years ago, I was standing in the shower thinking about this and that. My mind wandered to an image of Tibetan monks sitting on a Himalayan mountain ledge. I must’ve seen a documentary about it before.

The monks sat with their chests bare, snow drifting onto their shoulders. The temperature was arctic, yet they were calm, not shivering, not cold. And then a guy came and placed wet sheets on their bodies. Steam rose. The monks were actually drying the sheets with the warmth from their bodi...
