A Week in Jersey

If I had to sum up the perfect summer holiday it would look a little bit like this:Lazy mornings spent cooking boiled eggs for my little boy and I, meandering drives to new places and shouting ‘I can see the sea!’ for the first, second and third times that day. Lunchtime picnics on the beach with foil wrapped sandwiches and crisps from home and post-lunch ice creams or cups of sugary tea- depending on your preference (or, of course both). Sticky fingers and collecting sand, rocks and shells in every bag, pocket or crease there is. Paddling, swimming and splashing in the sea and the joy of it not being absolutely Baltic. And! Seeing your toes beneath you in the sea! It’s that clear! And early evening drives home, as the sun becomes lower and lazier; with the important decision of should we just get a fish and chips on the way home? Save cooking?

Last week my family and I got back from a week in Jersey. It’s not somewhere I knew a huge amount about before I went, but thanks to the magic power of my brother meeting a really wonderful human (a.k.a girlfriend) from there; being able to spend a week with her family was on the cards for this years summer holiday- and what a joy it was! I don’t think we could have asked for a lovelier setting, nicer company or a more beautiful place to explore over 7 days.

Being just over a 40 minute flight from London (or, if you have your sea legs 4 hours on a boat from the south coast); I think Jersey might be one of the most beautiful little gems you can travel to. With vast rural landscapes, lush winding country paths, roads with parades of powdery hydrangeas and agapanthus bursting out of beds. Plus, being an island, is also surrounded by some of the most gorgeous stretches of beaches I’ve seen. It’s a complete feast of a place. Not only does it do traditional beach holiday haven so well; with red Wall’s umbrellas flanking ice-cream shops and little coastal shops dotted with brightly coloured buckets and spades outside, but it also has flavours of France too; with mansard roofs and chocolate box houses all exhibiting elegant French names I can’t understand, but my goodness doesn’t everything sound more beautiful in French?

One of the biggest perks of an island like this, is that everything is so close. We hired a car and I don’t think there was anywhere that took us more than 15 minutes to get to (bearing in mind we stayed pretty centrally), but I loved the fact that we could be at the beach, a castle or the centre really quickly (which was also great with an under 5 too)! We packed in everything from rock-pooling, beach combing, castle hopping, swimming, antiquing and charity shopping and it was absolutely perfect. The beaches truly are the jewell in Jersey’s crown and whether you want to surf, sunbathe on enormous stretches of white sand, rock-pool, comb through pebbles and pottery or explore the caves and coves of hidden bays; there isn’t much you won’t find here.

Anyway! I thought I’d pop together a little list of the best places we visited in case you end up visiting, or fancy planning a little trip soon. I was also generously given some extra spots from you lovely lot, so I’ve added those in below too as places top of my next-time list!

  Seeing & Splashing

Havre de Pas & The Lido – What a spot! We visited here as the sun was going down and oh my! What a spot for an early evening dip. The art deco tidal pool and swim club completely stole my heart (and had nothing to do with the fact there was ABBA was playing out loud nearby)….

St. Brelades Bay –  If you know me, you’d have thought that the fact that this beach that has an actual Pizza Express on it would be the jewel in its crown but much to my own amazement; it’s natural beauty swept me away first! With peaceful waters and stretches of pale sand, it is truly beautiful.

St. Oeun’s Bay (Les Laveurs Car Park) – One of the things I was most taken by was the variety of coastline in Jersey, and spending an afternoon rock pooling at St. Ouen’s (spotting no less than an actual tiny lobster, crabs and many little fishes) was so peaceful with a picnic packed lunch. There’s also a lovely ice cream van often parked in the car park for a post-lunch Mr Whippy!

Elizabeth Castle –  I didn’t know much about Jersey’s rich history until visiting, and a morning at Elizabeth Castle is a wonderful way of delving into the island’s past. Take a picnic and watch the world go by, and soak up the beautiful panoramic views from the sea.

Plémont Beach – Tucked below a dramatic cliff edge lies Plémont beach. A stunning cove dotted with hidden caves, stretches of sand peppered with pools and a cliff-view cafe with views across the bay. We spent an afternoon here and I could have happily come back every day; what a spot!

Bonne Nuit – This perfectly petite harbour is a gorgeous spot for an afternoon ice cream and some serious beach combing when the tide is out. I could have spent all afternoon scoping through the pebbles and rocks for small treasures.

  Eating

La Braye – This was our first stop after we had landed, and what a spot for lunch! What a view! I cannot think of a more beautiful spot for lunch or a breakfast with a seriously impressive view.

La Braye, Gd Rte des Mielles, JE3 8FN, Jersey

Hank Marvin – A charming unassuming spot which boasts an epic breakfast and lunch menu which is absolutely delicious.

Rue de Haut de l’Orme, Jersey JE3 5FG, Jersey

The Potato Shack – A gorgeous spot for a contemporary breakfast (see the French toast to the left!) in the most rustic cosy setting. Go and visit the cows at the farm down the road afterwards!

Woodlands Farm, Rue de Maupertuis, JE2 3HG, Jersey

The Hungry Man – Whether you want a place to enjoy a cuppa and watch people swimming in Rozel bay, or just a place to cosy up on a rainy morning by the boats. Grab a sandwich at The Hungry Man because it may well be the best bacon bap I’ve ever had.

La Brecque du Nord Rozel JE, JE3 5BN, Jersey

The Yard – Tucked away in the centre of town, and perfect for a spot of lunch (inside or out!) if you’ve been mooching around the museum or shops.

The Weighbridge, Weighbridge Pl, JE2 3NG, Jersey

  Shopping

Charity Shops –  One thing Jersey does impressively well are charity shops. Not your average high street additions though; oh no! We’re talking warehouse style browsing with absolute treasures to be found. If you’re after an afternoon of thrifting and digging out gems take note of Durrell’s by the zoo, The Hospice Shop and Acorn.

St Aubin – I feel like wherever I go, I am on the hunt for a cracking car boot and/or antiques fair. Luckily for me, on the first weekend of the month Jersey has a gorgeous antiques fair in St Aubin; with stalls including antique French linens, knick-knacks, home wear and so much more. Thankfully a lot was cash only which curbed any impulse purchases, but well worth a pop by!

and for next time…

Petchi, Jersey Seafaris, El Tico, El Gato Gordo, Grand Hotel for cocktails, The Crab Shack, the back of the castle at Gorey for a swim and Awabi.

An Itinerary: 48 Hours in Deal

For my birthday this year I was set on doing one thing and one thing only (okay, maybe a couple of things- I do like to milk it, but I really wanted to do this one thing). And that, dear friends and readers- was a visit to the seaside! A couple of nights by the coast with my family; a selfish wish for annual leave to be spent in my company and an excuse to dust off my jelly shoes and march on down to one of my favourite British seaside towns.

At this time of year it feels like there is nowhere more beautiful. To see the sea shimmering in harmony with the sunshine, to sit on the pebbled beach- arms around your knees and cardigans pulled over hands when it’s chilly. To lumber weighty bags of vinegary chips back in carrier bags for dinner, or to end up abandoning half of them on the beach as hungry seagulls threaten to gobble them up first. Towering, blousy hollyhocks outside pastel-hued cottages and smatterings of wild flowers lining coastal pathways. The first-dip-in-the-sea-squeals and sandy shoes, socks and toes. All before catching a sunset (if you’re lucky) or simply just being woken by the gossip of seagulls- it’s not peaceful, but it’s definitely not London traffic either.

And of course, one of my favourite places to head to is Deal. Just over an hour and a half from London, to me it is the perfect British seaside town. A perfect balance of quiet and calm (although, admittedly, if you go in the earlier part of the week a lot of things will be closed), quaint, colourful and plenty to do for a couple of nights outside of the city. A hum of tradition with a small arcade on the front with a little shop to buy buckets, spades and fishing nets at the entrance of the pier. As well as plenty of beautiful contemporary shops, cosy places to eat and windows to nosy in on during an afternoon meander.

Anyway! I thought I’d pop together a little itinerary of some of the things we got up to during our time there- you could absolutely stretch it out if you wanted, and if you take a car, there are so many other beautiful seaside towns a stones throw away too- magic!

  Monday Staying: Spindrift

I found the beautiful Spindrift on Air BnB, and it really was the perfect seaside bolthole. It had the most airy open plan kitchen and living area (which provided ample inspiration for our own renovation; the tiles! the plates!), so much attention to detail (I was fawning over the Fee Greening prints) and the most heavenly retro tiled bathroom and children’s bedroom (which made for perfect downtime reading with me and little A). Additionally, it was a stones throw away from everything we could have wanted and was very easy to find somewhere to park, which can sometimes be a pickle in busy seaside spots! What a gem!

Lunch: Deal Pier Kitchen

Perched at the end of the brutalist pier is this cosy little lunch spot; which I truly believe would be just as beautiful on a rainy day (although the walk down may be a little sketchy) as it would with the sun leaking it. Not only that, but the food here was wonderful. Delicious cakes, breakfast eggs and offerings for little ones too.

Pier, Beach St, Deal CT14 6HY

Late-afternoon

Between lunch and some important birthday cake in the afternoon, we spent time exploring the town and enjoying some very quiet early-June beach time. Although a lot of things are shut on a Monday, we did manage a snoop in Smugglers Records which has an impressive selection (and beer on tap, if you’re that way inclined, too).

  Dinner: Updown Farmhouse

When it comes to special occasion spots for dinner in and around Deal, I knew that the wonderful Rosie would be the person to ask for any spots not on my radar. With The Rose and Blue Pelican coming up (the Blue Pelican have a lovely private dining room too); it was Updown Farmhouse (where we’d gone a couple of years ago for my 30th) that we ended up booking a table at; and trust me when I say that this place is truly something else. I’ve actually written a post about it here previously; but having heard important intelligence that they’re opening an outdoor pool this summer (!!) this special spot is about to become even more breathtaking.

Updown Farmhouse, Updown Rd, Betteshanger, Deal CT14 0EF

  Tuesday Lunch: Deal Deli

For the perfect picnic lunch, featuring homemade bagels and very delicious posh crisps, make a note to make an early pitstop at Deal Deli. They also have shelves of lots of lovely labelled goods, which will definitely have you craving one-of-a-kind jam flavours and seasonings you’ll have to justify room in your suitcase for.

High St. Deal. CT14 6BE

Early-afternoon: A brilliant bike ride

One of my favourite things we did over the couple of days we spent in Deal was hire bicycles for a cycle along the coastal path. I’d walked past Hut 55 several times in the past (they also do yoga classes, seriously delicious cakes and homemade picnics too) but the thought of going on a family cycle with Arlo was something I was really looking forward to. With childrens seats and bikes on offer, it’s such a gorgeous way of exploring the town and getting to go a little further without taking the car. They’re amazing at recommending routes too, so if you need inspiration the people there were brilliant.

Deal Beach, Marine Road, CT14 7DN

Dinner: Sea View

Our initial plan was to get fish and chips from Middle Street Fish Bar who do amazing traditional fish and chips, but alas- they were closed! After asking the girls at Hut 55 for their best chippy suggestions- we collected dinner from Sea View, and it was wonderful. I can definitely see why the locals love it so much!

 69 Beach St, Deal CT14 6HY

Wednesday Breakfast: The Rose

No visit to Deal is complete without popping into The Rose; whether that’s for breakfast, a late afternoon cuppa and cake or a pre-dinner cocktail. It’s the most beautifully designed hotel and restaraunt and every time I come away I’m completely inspired by their interiors and menu (just take a nosey at their Instagram, or this blog post for more)! They’ve also opened The Pelican Rooms for beachside treatments (which sound like the dream), and are the team behind The Blue Pelican, which is also meant to be delicious.

91 High St, Deal CT14 6ED

Late-morning – The big mooch

Before we left we naturally had to take advantage of a few of the beautiful shops being open, so popped into some of these gorgeous ones below:

Barkened: A wonderful gem of a shop covering gifts, womenswear and *the* cutest selection of items for your four-legged friend too.

Hoxton Store: A beautiful selection of clothes, candles, soaps and gifts.

Will and Yates: I fell in love with the curation, artwork and objects in this shop. The kind of shop you both want to move into and spend a lot of money in.

Mileage: I am *so* sad this shop was shut when we came, as we saw the most beautiful lights and painting in the window- but if you’re planning on doing some antiques shopping (or fancy some A* browsing) I can’t recommend a nosey here enough.

My Spring Make Up Bag

*post includes affiliate linksAs the seasons change, much like my wardrobe, my breakfast routine (normally a gentle porridge to granola switcheroo) and my desire for wanting to go for a walk around the park during lunchtime opposed to tucking into an ITV quiz show; my make up bag also likes to have a happy quarterly refresh.

Admittedly, I am a woman who likes what she likes; a creature of habit when it comes to what I put on my face. My own personal shop front! But knowing the way the industry moves, adapts and the marvellous things it comes out with month after month; it’s nice to get a little creative every now and again (even if that means switching up a blush shade or diving in the deep end with a plumping lip gloss rather than hydrating balm- I know, who IS SHE)! But I thought I’d share a handful of my favourites that are coming out every morning around 8am; showing up and giving me a lift, some life and a whole lot of glow too.

(I’m trying to not do that thing that recipe books do when they give you a whole biography about a holiday to Italy with their grandmother when they were ten before they get to telling you about the carbonara you MUST MAKE, and instead just tell you about why these products are brilliant so I will try my very best!)

SKIN

NARS Light Reflecting Foundation: I’ll be honest here; every NARS foundation I’ve tried becomes a staple. Although I’ve been a Natural Radiant Longwear girlie for most of my life; the Light Reflecting foundation is also an incredibly hard worker at giving glow, great coverage and lasting all day.

By Terry Hyaluronic Serum Concealer: The one concealer I am happy to spend over thirty British pounds on because it is that good. Often I am reluctant to spend that on a takeaway, so I’m sure that must be saying something. It works in a way that a foundation does; a little goes a very long way and often if I’m using this my ol’ friend NARS is taking a day off. It’s the perfect cover-up and because of the hydrating qualities steers it away from being drying too.

Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm: The Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm is a new addition to my make up routine, and when all is well on my face this is the absolute perfect base. It’s thicker than I expected but in a very good way; it feels substantial upon application (I use a sponge) but blends to feel light and glowy in the way that Vieve products have the magic touch to do (honestly, if I can get that Jamie Genevieve glow than SIGN ME UP).

  BLUSH

Pixi On-the-Glow Blush: This stick blush might be the longest serving item in my make up bag, but also the easiest to use, most failsafe and effective too. You cannot go wrong using this- it’s swipe and go and *always* adds the right amount of sheen and colour, always. It makes me feel like Lisa Eldridge when I use it because I can apply it with all my rings on very quickly and the pay off is always perfect; she’s a MUA guys!

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush: A little more for the delicate handed, a little goes a very long way with this- but when it goes OH she shines. This collection of contour, highlight and blush are serious bang for your buck and I do worry with the minimal amount you need I could have this well into the 22nd century. But! If it gives my a Hollywood healthy ‘rogue’ (as my dad would say) then it gets a big tick from me.

  EYES & LIPS

Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm: The perfect antidote for colour and moisture; the ‘Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balms’ have an almost theatrically dramatic name (for the faint hearted, do not be put off by the use of Phantom here); but are the perfect throw-in-your-bag lippie for gentle colour, intense hydration and a very glossy pout (does anyone say ‘pout’ anymore in beauty writing? Did we leave it in the nineties??)

Pixi Lip Lift Max: I very much have my suspicions with plumping lip products; and trust me, I a not expecting a miracle when I use one. But Pixi do do plumping, great glossy lip products very well for a dewy, natural finish.

Blink Brow Bar Combo: I will admit it, I am very very late to the Blink Brow Bar party and I hang my head in shame because their products are, as everyone has said, really really good. I’ve been using a combination of their Ultimate Arch Definer for filling and Clear Brow Gloss for grooming and have already repurchased. Nothing makes filling in and shaping my brows quite so easy.

Victoria Beckham Vast Lash Mascara: I’m sure I’ve spoken about this mascara before, but she’s just SO. GOOD. Lengthening, flirty fluttery lashes that don’t smudge and look remarkably natural (this is not the mascara if you’re after a chunky sixties lash); but it is the perfect every day ‘are they really your natural lashes???’ mascara.

SCENT

Ffern: If you’re after a truly special seasonal scent, there really isn’t anyone else who creates magic and moments like Ffern. Everything about the way they story tell and create their fragrances feels like a time capsule for the current season and time we are living in. It’s the way I imagine perfume was meant to be created, and has something nostalgic and magical about it. Each of their four yearly scents are released at the equinox or solstice, and are created using natural, sustainably sourced high quality ingredients sympathetic and aligned with the seasons. This spring’s scent is a floral violet scent; with green notes of jonquil daffodil and a softness from ylang ylang. it’s got an encompassing warmness to it whilst also smelling fresh and light. magic.

Jo Malone Beach Blossom: There’s something about a Jo Malone summer fragrance which wraps you up in a sandy beach towel, kisses your skin with a coconutty warmth and hands you a sparkling mojito as you watch the sun start to settle on the horizon; and Beach Blossom is here to sweep you to faraway shores (even if the longest journey you have planned this spring is a slow train home from Victoria at 18:09). This scent is exactly what I love in summer; it’s transportive, feminine and makes me feel like I could be staying somewhere with Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins (admittedly, with a bit less drama) (I haven’t caught up yet).

Miller Harris Rêverie de Bergamote: Perhaps I haven’t mentioned, but in summer, or spring, or actually winter or autumn in fact- I really favour smelling like a bowl of fresh zesty citrus fruit. The kind of smell that lingers after you’ve ripped open a tangerine, all juicy and sticky. That’s what I want to be the human version of! Admittedly, this feels a little bit sexier and grown up. It’s the kind of delicious scent I’d also say smells ‘clean’ too (which somehow always sounds a bit clinical, but is meant in a delicious fresh way) and is perfect for adding a little spritz of sunshine to the every day.

4 South London Gems: Hither Green Edition

As wonderful as it is to live in a city as vibrant, exciting and eclectic as London (and I am fiercely sure I will never tire of it), when it comes to weekends and pottering around day to day- I am truly devoted to the spots on my doorstep. The bakeries, cafes, and independent shops that rarely require a zone change or a long bus ride. And though I feel like I’ve definitely gotten into the groove of sharing lots of my favourite places in central London, I realise I rarely dip into the spots closer to home that despite perhaps not being at the end of a tube line (yet! YET!), are well worth the visit too.

Now, initially this was going to be ‘5 random south London spots I love’ but I realised all but one were merely five minutes of each other, so thought I’d keep it to one area today to make it easier (and make for a real round trip, in case it’s not that local to you either). So here we are; Hither Green! One of my favourite pockets of south London, and somewhere I often stop by if I’ve been to Blackheath or Greenwich. The perfect parade for a breakfast or an afternoon cuppa- my best friend Gemma and I have been mooching around here and having sugary teas for the last 15 years (I remember posting about You Don’t Bring Me Flowers on here back in 2010), so on a recent weekend where we pondered over a breakfast spot, I had just the place in mind…

Arlo & Moe

Arlo & Moe has quickly become one of my favourite places for breakfast, lunch and cloud-like afternoon chocolate Guinness cake (usually with a top weighed down by enough cream cheese and small green clover sprinkles to sink a truly delicious ship). Whether I’m sat by the window catching up with a friend over porridge on a bright Monday, tucking into beans and scrambled eggs with my toddler, picking up a doorstop takeaway sandwich, settling in for a Saturday morning catch up or bringing my grandparents for breakfast- it always feels like the perfect breakfast-next-door neighbourhood spot to while away a few hours in. A truly great all-rounder for any time of day.

Three Sisters

Next door to Arlo & Moe is one of my favourite shops south of the river. I have found it impossible to pop into here and not leave without a bunch of their Icelandic poppies, a knit from their beautifully curated vintage rail (which always seems to have the best pieces) a hand thrown vase, a greetings card for my stash or simply something else I didn’t know I needed but now cannot continue without! The drama! The rush! It’s the perfect shop which balances floristry, gifting and curated home wear so well and everything is styled with the most caring thoughtful eye. Plus, a shop with almost three rows of Le Bon Shoppe is almost code for ‘it’s going to be nice here isn’t it’.

  Crimson and Clover

Perhaps it’s cheating including the sister shop to Three Sisters here, but if you’re in the area it would be rude not to! Head across the bridge from Hither Green Station and you can’t miss the ruby red front of Crimson and Clover tucked along the parade. Stocking the most beautifully selected collection of childrenswear, knitting goods, natural beauty and more romantic vintage; these two shops are the kind I wish every high street would have on them.

You Don’t Bring Me Flowers

I remember coming here years ago and writing about it, and it feels really special to be able to revisit a local independent shop which is still thriving and blooming years later. And it truly hasn’t changed. The most gorgeous interior, which is bursting with flowers and things to look at; it’s the perfect place to hole up in the corner with a coffee and watch the world go by through a frame of petals and posies. Whether you’re in the market for plants, fresh cakes, a hand tied bouquet or just five minutes before your train; surely there isn’t anywhere more beautiful to do it.

24 Hours in Dunkeld

*press trip, but all opinions my ownHaving been a serial romanticiser of long train journeys, beautiful and musical accents different to mine yet still feel familiar, lush rolling hills with their heads in the clouds and windows with new views; it never takes a lot for me to find an excuse to want to visit somewhere new. But my goodness do I have a soft spot for Scotland.

So last week, when I was invited on a little trip to beautiful Dunkeld in Perthshire, Scotland with TBCo. and the beautiful Jo-Ann, I was very much looking forward to expanding my Scottish horizons and venturing a little further north. A tranquil town on the north bank of the River Tay, Dunkeld is a postcard-perfect place.

Peppered with quaint pastel shop fronts neatly lined against a backdrop of grey stone houses (and one grand sunshine yellow home which you can spot as you drive across the bridge into town)- it sits neatly in front of the surrounding countryside; nestled amongst woods, walks and meadows; making it a very special place to visit.

Despite only being there for 24 hours, we made sure to have a good wander- and although we didn’t get to properly soak in the Scottish hills; we did manage to see a delightful handful of what Dunkeld has to offer. Admittedly, it probably doesn’t require a whole guide (with a bit of a wander you’d definitely stumble across all of these beautiful spots on their own) but it’s always nice to hear a little more! Given more time I would have loved to have visited the Beatrix Potter Garden and Birnam Wood- so if I’m lucky enough to head back, I’ll be adding those in…

  The Taybank

Situated on the bank of the River Tay, this hotel feels like a quintessentially cosy spot to nestle into after a busy day. With a bustling restaurant famous for its Scottish seasonal fare, and their bar-with-a-view (and an open fire); I dare you to find a more inviting spot for a 4pm cuppa (or pint, depending on what you fancy). And that’s before I’ve mentioned the room! The room!! With nods to Scandi and mid-century style, the rooms are all fluffy textures and clean lines, married with earthy colours and a bath so big it could moonlight as a human-sized cereal bowl- every detail was thought of and made homely; what a place to spend an evening.

  Aran

Although it’s hard to miss on Atholl St, I gravitate towards a bakery like a month to a flame when I’m visiting somewhere. Trust me when I say I *will* find the pastries wherever I visit. Aran however, is a very special place. Owned by the brilliant Flora Shedden; everything in Aran is baked on site and created using locally sourced produce; with a menu marrying artisan delicacies and bakery staples all done exceptionally well. Regretfully I could only manage a cardamon bun, shortbread and chocolate cookie to take home (although I will say the cookie was one of the best I’ve ever had) but if a Danish travelled better you bet I would have filled my boots.

Lòn Store

Behind the wonderful brains behind Aran, and a stones throw away, is Lòn Store. One of the most well curated, visually beautiful shops I’ve been to. Subtly colour-coordinated but with ample substance to match its style; Lòn stocks everything from store cupboard items, fresh goodies, beautiful kitchen and home pieces as well as some of the best cookbooks out there. It’s a total haven, and given the chance I could have done my complete Christmas shopping very, very early. Plus, I’ve just seen they do monthly postal boxes which would make *the* most special gift to the foodie lover all year round too.

  Dunkeld’s

Doubling up as both a supermarket and cosy café, Dunkeld’s is the kind of place you walk in with joyful abandon and leave with two baguettes, some chutney, some sugar coated shortbread, fresh pasta and a tangerine with no idea when you’ll have time to eat them before you go- but they just look so good! Before we left, Charlotte and I did manage to sit down for a cuppa in here (and also to try their hot buttered donuts too, which seemed like it would have been rude not to); but! I picked up their smoked salmon sandwich for the way back and when I say it was the best I’ve ever had (capers, cucumbers, pickled onion- the LOT!) I’m very much not joking.

Shannon’s

God I love a grocers! The kind of place that makes you really wish you lived somewhere and had on your doorstep, Shannon’s was a spring feast of delicious fresh fruit and veg, and enough deli treats that you could seriously whip up a storm for tea. That, or swing by for an epic selection of picnic supplies before a bracing walk along the river. Dreamy.

Plus! I didn’t get to pop in properly, but for any small plates and wine drinkers, Redwood Wines looked like the perfect place for a cosy glass of wine and cheese as the sun goes down.

Our Weekend in Bristol Itinerary

*(features press stay) A couple of weekends ago I visited Bristol for the weekend. It was my second ever visit to the city, and after deliberating the perfect spot for a short break away (which had to fit the brief of ‘relatively short train from London on a Friday night, with plenty of things to do within close proximity’), we settled on this beautiful city. And so, with an M&S picnic in tow caught our post work train from Paddington for a weekend in the west country.

Admittedly, and upon reflection- Bristol is the kind of place you could easily spend a week, never mind a weekend. I don’t think there was a moment I wasn’t checking my map for places nearby I wanted to pop by (of which there were many) and I’ve come to realise that realistically speaking, there are simply not enough meals in a day to pack in even a handful of the delicious places there are to eat here (and that’s with three good meals a day and ample bakery visits in-between)…

With humbug balconies, sorbet-coloured houses flanking the hilly landscapes and riverside and an undeniable fizz across the city that truly champions community, art and all things independent; Bristol has the perfect marriage of culture, cuisine and everything in between.

And although it’s undeniably a student city, there’s a real life here that means you’re very likely to be swept along stream with the buzz and excitement of what it is to be here (even if you do find yourself saying ‘ah, isn’t it nice to see the young people having fun!’ as you head back to your room at 10:30pm on a Saturday night as everyone starts heading out). It’s very much shot up to one of my favourite places in the UK to spend a weekend, and so I thought I’d share our little itinerary below if you fancy planning something similar! It felt like a gorgeous time of year to mooch around the neighbourhoods, sit outside cafes for coffees, cakes and people watching as well as admire the vibrant daffodils and fluffy blossoms making their grand yearly appearances.

So if you’re planning something similar; here’ our little itinerary (with everywhere we’d head back to with more time on our next visit, too)- enjoy!

Friday:   Staying: Clifton Boho Apartments on Kip* Having only ever stayed in the city centre before, I was a bit of a novice as to where would be a good place to stay- but thankfully Kip swept in like my knight in accommodation-laden armour and presented me with the perfect pad, in the shape of the Clifton Boho Apartments’, which truly had us quickly feeling like locals. Now, I don’t want to be dramatic at all, but when I say I had to investigate the duvet and pillow labels before leaving because we slept so well I am counting it as a necessary action and not a heady act of a well slept woman- but my GOD, the beds! The bath! It was the perfect place to set off from each day (a stone’s throw away from the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Clifton Village) and a truly heavenly spot to come back to after racking up a significant step count. The beautiful interiors oozed a true sun-drenched joy that even if you aren’t lucky enough to wake with the sun streaming through your window, you’ll likely come away wanting to redecorate and adopt some serious interiors ideas. A dream! Dinner: Pizzucci After arriving as bedtime rolled around, it was Gardener’s World and a takeaway pizza ahead of a big day of exploring. Rumour had it that Pizzucci pizzas were something to write home about and their crispy thin bases, rich sauce and cloud-like-crusts were the perfect addition to a night with Mike and Monty.

Saturday: AM Mooch to Clifton Suspension Bridge (beautiful on a sunny day), before heading down to Clifton Village. Breakfast: Burra, Clifton Village Burra was one place that came up a lot when I was offered some very kind Bristol recommendations, and in the heart of Clifton Village– it is an *ideal* people watching, and more importantly, dog watching spot to have breakfast. Although on a Saturday morning it was touch and go as to whether we’d get a table we were granted the perfect window seat and tucked into sweet coconutty granola and pastries as we watched the world go by (it was so good we went to the North Street one for our Sunday eggs)!  Mid Morning: Post breakfast it was a wander around Clifton Village; dipping into the charity shops and peppering of antique shops. Focus on the Past and Rachel’s and Michael’s Antiques were my favourites (especially the latter for the magpie in me)!We then headed towards Cotham Hill. If I learnt one thing it was that I could quite easily just mooch around the neighbourhoods here. If my appetite had no bounds I would have headed into Fed here, but popped into some more charity shops and continued to soak it all up!

PM Lunch: Little Hollows If you want a good lunch, it’s clear that a stop off at Chando’s Road is a bit of a must. Stopping at nothing to seek out great pasta, we cuddled up at Little Hollows and filled up on their signature agnolotti and ragu which were heaven, of course. Late Afternoon: Okay, okay we couldn’t do more than one meal along here, but we could make a cake stop at Wilson’s Bread Shop which we very much did. We were also told that they’ve just introduced wine and oyster evenings on a Saturday too, which sound very fancy! After lunch it was a slow meander to Gloucester Road where Rhubarb Jumble (amazing vintage and adorable accessories) and UStudio (the most incredible selection of curated lifestyle) were on the agenda, as well as popping our heads into a handful of the charming book, health and nick-nack shops.

Dinner: Bristol Lido Oh this place! The Lido is truly the most magical spot in the heart of the city, which I’m sure you could blink and you’d walk past it. If I’d have been more organised I would have loved to book a swim and sauna session here, but dinner and their small plates menu truly didn’t disappoint. It was so gorgeous to sit and watch people enjoy an evening dip, and I bet this place is absolutely glistening on a sunny bright morning.  After Dinner: The Lanes Because there is nothing as fun as finding a great place to bowl in a new place, The Lanes were the perfect place for some after dinner fun. Doubling up as a gig venue (where we were lucky to catch some brilliant music from Blvck Hippy), it had such a fun vibe and was such a lovely place for a game or two (plus, it’s opposite Rough Trade which also looked like a great spot for a drink too- they always have amazing in-stores).

Sunday: AM After check out, we found somewhere to drop our bags off for the day. We then popped into Heron Books which is the most gorgeous book shop in Clifton. Breakfast: Tobacco Factory Although we ended up revisiting Burra for a proper breakfast, that wasn’t before we’d done an essential cake run at the Tobacco Factory and explored the market stalls on a sunny Sunday. North Street and around Bedminster really feels like the place to be on a nice weekend in Bristol, and given more planning we could have definitely tried to catch one of their brilliant events too.

Mid Morning/Early Afternoon: Post breakfast, it was time to tick off some of the beautiful shops on North Street. Mon Pote was an absolute treasure trove of everything, literally EVERYTHING beautiful (to say I could have spent a fortune would be an understatement), A New Tribe for creative and considered lifestyle brands and goods, Bristol General Store for the most excellent clothing selection (a.k.a a tonne of Le Bon Shoppe and the loveliest staff) and Friendly Records for a good old-fashioned tinker through the collection. From North Street, we walked over towards Wapping Wharf . Unfortunately, we didn’t have lots of time to spend here, but loved being beside the water and seeing all of the gorgeous things going on- next time I’d love to head back to M Shed , which I’ve been told is brilliant. Finally, our last stretch was into the centre, via the Quay and up Park Street for a mosey; before heading back to the station.

Although we only scratched the surface, I feel like we covered some really lovely ground on this trip. I would have loved to see more, but for a relaxing weekend somewhere you can’t do it all, can you?! There definitely has to be a line between trying to do it all and actually soaking it in, and I think we just about got the balance right (what’s nicer than a weekend of good food, good shops and some bowling?!)

I’ve popped below a handful of spots we didn’t quite make it to but were starred on my map, just in case (and so I don’t forget them for next time)!

S P O T S  O F  N O T E

The Mayflower for Dim Sum, Dragon (next to IKEA), COR, Kask Wine, Farro, Hart’s Bakery, Under the Stars, Paco Tapas, Salt and Malt, Pasta Ripiena, The Bristol Loaf, Swoon Gelato, Rova, Park St., Guild of Dough, East Village Vegan Cafe, Sonny Stores, Fed, M Shed, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery King St. & Sparks.

(I can also confirm the wonderful Elly Pear has some excellent suggestions too, and is a true Bristol legend)!

Everything Good In My Bathroom Cupboard Right Now

*post includes affiliate linksI don’t think I need to go into much detail about how much of a creature of habit I am. I rinse and repeat the same dinners (salmon tray bakes, macaroni cheese, vegetarian ragu and so on and so on), outfits (denim jackets, striped tops, prairie dresses, high waisted jeans), make up (cat eyes and red lipstick), music combinations (The Lemon Twigs and Les Mis) pretty neatly until they run dry; and when it comes to skincare- the same applies.

But ever since moving house in November, I’ve been on a limited rotation which means everything I’ve been using, I’ve been using. There’s been little space for frippery and the products I can get my mitts on have really been having to work for me, otherwise it’s been panicked trips to Boots and Space NK (which, let’s be honest- is truly not the worst thing in the world)- but by this point, I know what’s good.

Anyway- since then, these are the products that have been my skincare support system. The ones seeing me through late evenings, smudged mascara and random seven o’clock spots. The ones that come out when my general reaction to a glimpse in the mirror is ‘oh my CHRIST I look knackered’ and ‘…was that there last night?’

I’m at a stage of life where my priorities with my skin, by and large, are hydration, trying to hold on to some semblance of glow and looking healthy. Despite the funny old time we’re in for ageing and tweakments and the way we appear online (no judgement! Your face, my dudes!) most of the time I’m at peace with my skin looking its age, and as long as I can claw back a few of the hours where my sleep might have been a bit patchy with a nice oil, I think we’re doing okay.

The Cleansers

Beauty Pie Happy Face Cleanser: The most silky brilliant gel cleanser which is an amazing second cleanse/morning cleanse/or no make up day cleanser. It gets to the real gumph (do we know how we’re spelling this?) and my face always feels like it’s been properly washed after using it. Fuss free good stuff.

Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm: It pains me to admit that people have been talking to me about this for YEARS. It’s the Sex Education of skincare for me. The one where people say ‘oh you’re gonna LOVE it!! It is SO GOOD’ for years until I finally encounter it by chance and then, obviously, OBVIOUSLY fall in love. I believe I got a little pot from my pal Dulcie at Christmas and I also remember Gem talking to me about it- and yes, it’s amazing. It smells like a spa and alongside my girl Elemis and her Pro Collagen offering, it’s about as close to an at home facial as you’re getting. The queen of the double cleanse. Anything that smells this stunning and doesn’t leave me with spots deserves some serious recognition. How does she do it!

  The Serums

Clinique Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Serum: Late last year I went to a Clinique pop up bus which did skin consultations (fun!) and matched you up with products that suited the care your skin might need. I was lucky enough to take home a selection of new products to try based on the assessment, and one of those was this wonderful serum which seems like it’s powered by magic and this bottle is still going strong. I almost wonder if it will ever run out. It’s a cocktail of hyaluronic acid and retinoids (safe to use both morning and night) as well as a ‘CL1870 Peptide Complex™’ (which sounds very futuristic but seems to be doing something wonderful) and although there are lots of impressive consumer clinical studies about it reducing fine lines which is exciting, the main thing for me is that my skin instantly feels more hydrated after using it and always looks significantly better when I’ve been using it solidly.

Beauty Pie Youthbomb 360 Radiance Concentrate Serum: Oh man, THIS STUFF. I’m not sure what they put in this exactly but it’s great. And anything that sounds like a meteor of youthfulness to the skin is bound to have me at hello. On their website it says ‘with exclusive Biolog-Elastic™ Complex to help visibly firm, resurface, brighten, tighten, hydrate and glow – all in one bottle’- and, really- who am I to argue with that kind of confidence?

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum: If I could only use serums from SkinCeuticals I think I would (which, typing, I think is a bit like saying if I could only ever drive [insert fancy car name here] I would- but you get my point). Financially, it would be crippling- but if there are products worth their weight in gold- it’s these. Last year I tried out a whole routine from SkinCeuticals and it may well be the best my skin has looked in years. I really felt like I woke up and didn’t look like I’d slept like an upside down bat for four hours. I’d go as far as saying model skin, but the bat analogy feels a bit more humble. So far I have tried this, the HA Intensifier and Cell Cycle catalyst and they always deliver. This is one of my favourite Vitamin C based serum’s I’ve tried (the Drunk Elephant one and Typology one are also very very good) but for some serious under-make up morning glow (as well as lots of other magic skincare science), this is about as good as a very elaborate smoothie with added fancy seeds from a café with a neon sign that says something like ‘You GLOW girl!’

The Eye Creams

ILIA Bright Start Activated Eye Cream: Man, everything ILIA are doing seems to be just really good. I have yet to meet an ILIA product I didn’t like; from Skin Rewind Foundation Sticks and Beauty Lip Wrap Reviving Balm. It’s really all good stuff. Skincare wise I have been extremely impressed by their Barrier Build Skin Protectant Cream as a great morning and night moisturiser and this eye cream is brilliantly brightening and de-puffing (and applies with a fancy little ceramic applicator which always feels very luxurious too).

MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Eye Cream: For a long time I was very much ‘if you’ve tried one eye cream, you’ve tried them all’ but after getting this bad boy in the Liberty advent calendar this year (worth £110 NO LESS!!) I very much realise not all eye creams are made equal because this feels like pure luxury. It’s got a Greek yoghurty thickness which I’m sure isn’t the kind of description they were banking on, but one you can really feel smoothing things over. I need an eye cream that’s going to brighten and smooth. Flatten out the creases a bit when I’ve slept face down on my pillow and this stuff is special.

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Eye Base: Can you mention a series of eye creams and not mention this? I am reaching an age where I am beginning to appreciate the true beauty of a really good, weighty eye cream (see above) and this Bobbi Brown one seems to be rightfully omnipresent in my bathroom cupboard. I think skincare and beauty can be hugely overwhelming, especially when you’re in the market for something new- but this just feels like one I can count on.

The Moisturisers

Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream: I picked up one of these moisturisers during a very controlled walk around Space NK about a year ago, and they’re just gorgeous. I think I came for the adorable little tub (it has A GOLDEN SPOON applicator?!!!) and glowing reviews (no pun intended) and stayed for the fact that actually, it’s really bloody good. The dewy skin cream does exactly what it says on the tin. I’ve been hopping between that and the water cream, and both are just excellent moisturisers.

Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Oil: Sometimes, just sometimes- I crave a fancy oil. There are evenings when you’ve used a cleanser like the Emma Hardie one and for the full fancy experience you just have to treat yourself to an oil. To go to bed lying horizontally and radiating lotions and potions. Sometimes, it just has to be done. If that evening is coming up, make this your oil. As with many Elemis products, it feels luxurious but just quietly gets the job done. Quiet skincare luxury if you like.

  The Suncream

Beauty Pie Super Healthy Skin Ultralight: What can I say! It’s just a great suncream! It goes on brilliantly under make up, and hey- it’s important! It’s also incredibly light and doesn’t feel cakey when you’re already two serums and a moisturiser deep, which is also important.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream: Talking about this in a new and original way feels a bit like trying to explain why Let it Be is a good song to someone that just knows it’s great. IT’S JUST GOOD OK. It never misses. Dry lips? Sorted. Weird patches of dry skin on your hands/elbows/face? Not a problem! Want to slick your eyebrows with the leftover stuff? Nee bother! Although it’s not *quite* as important as needing my house keys and debit card in my bag, I’d say it’s a close third. Musn’t. Be. Without.

Paris in Autumn: A Guide

I don’t think there is a city in the world that doesn’t look heavenly under the glowy guise of autumn.

The orange, yellow and red leaves. The low sunlight that catches through what’s left on the trees, and the kind of cold that leaves your cheeks simultaneously rosy and cold to touch at the same time. Steamed up windows through warmly lit cafes, coat weather, tights weather and light mornings blending with short afternoons. The season in which I flirt with the idea of becoming a sophisticated woman who listens to jazz and carries a worn in hardback in my handbag. One year it’ll happen! But regardless, it really feels like a special time of year.

One city that especially twinkles during this time of year is Paris, naturellement. “What time of year does Paris not look good?!” I hear you cry! But in the autumn, there’s just something. A seasonal je ne sais quoi.

Now, I have very fortunately had the pleasure of visiting this magical city three times this year (I am very much still pinching myself)- two of which were in October, and at a time where the city was truly lit with a sepia glow (which could have been just my orange-tinted-love-glasses, but I’m pretty sure it was!)

Anyway! Having gone for both work and with friends, I’ve been able to collect a handful of rather lovely recommendations; whether that’s for fresh crusty baguettes stacked with ham and cheese, the thickest most luxurious hot chocolates to sip whilst you people watch from the pavement or the coolest brands for vintage inspired clothing- so of course, I had to share them here (many thanks to Abi, Kerry, Sarah and Harmony for contributing here). What could be autumnal than cosying up in the Jardin du Luxembourg/Tuileries Garden with a book and a baguette in the late afternoon sunshine?! Although I haven’t been able to tick all of them off (the ones I haven’t tried I’ll mark with an *) I thought I’d pop a little updated guide here. So much changes so often in these wonderful cities of ours, so it’s nice to come back to guides when I can (especially as so many of you are the ones who help with these gorgeous suggestions too)! So! Without further ado…

  The food! The pastries!

Brasserie l’Emil: Modern takes on traditional French dishes, situated in the painfully chic Chateau Voltaire. Truly delicious!

Chez Janou*: Delightful traditional bistro with a rumoured iconic chocolate mousse.

Brasserie Lipp:*: Traditional French fare, focussing on excellent quality.

Mamiche Bakery: Oh me, oh my! These sandwiches! These cakes! The pastries! There’s a reason there’s a queue here (and it’s also in a really cool [art of town for a mooch too).

Blondie*: Opposite Mamiche, I haven’t been but heard it’s also very good (and great if the queue is just a little large!

The Smiths Bakery: A generous Abi recommendation, the quiche and pistachio loaf cake are both sensational.

Boris Lumé Boulangerie: A very beautiful little French patisserie which is apparently just as delicious to eat at as it looks from the outside.

Café Renoir*: Tucked inside the garden of the Musée de Montmartre, this would be a gorgeous hidden lunch spot.

Caffè Stern*: Italian style coffee house and bistro.

Café de Flore: About as unknown as The Beatles, despite being a bit of a tourist trap the breakfast, dippy eggs and hot chocolate are all very very good and it’s popular for a reason.

Treize Bakery Paris*: A little slice of garden heaven in the shape of a tea parlour (oooerr!) for the perfect ladylike afternoon overlooking the Luxembourg gardens.

La Poule au Pot: A cosy, traditional French restaurant with *the* most sensational frites and creme brûlée (plus a lot of fun celebrity names on the wall you can work through)!

La Terrasse de Madame*: Tucked in the middle of the Jardin du Luxembourg, apparently this spot has some very lovely cocktails on offer.

Pierre Hermé: Truly *chefs kiss* macarons.

Recto Verso: For coffee lovers, this is a very trendy little spot.

Café les Deux Gares: Brain child of Luke Edward Hall and the perfect cafe/coffee spot, plus a lovely place to sit outside and people watch near the station.

  The drinks!

Aux Deux Amis*: Small plates and natural wines perfect for people watching (just pack a scarf)!

Folderol*: I may know very little about wine, but I know a *lot* about ice cream, and this place specialises in both.

  Faire du shopping!

Merci: Can you do a shopping recommendation in Paris without including Merci!? It was my first time downstairs and BOY OH BOY.

La Grande Épicerie de Paris: THE most amazing supermarket ever, I could have spent hours in here. You can can also get your butter vacuum packed to take home- tres bien!

L’Écume des Pages: A very lovely book shop to peruse with stationery too.

Bourgine: Handmade sixties and retro inspired pieces, crafted so beautifully.

Thank God I’m A VIP*: This was sadly closed when we walked past, but I hear the vintage here is heavenly (according to my very savvy pal, Kerry)!

Marin Montagut*: A shop filled with things to make your heart flutter, mainly for the home.

Passage des Panoramas & Galerie Vivienne*: A couple of the most beautiful covered passageways in Paris, perfect for a rainy afternoon mooch.

Jousseaume Bookstore*: A truly beautiful bookshop in the Galerie Vivienne.

À la Mère de Famille*: As chocolate shops go, this one looks like it’s straight from a Paul King film. Play, ‘You’ve Never Had Chocolate Like This!’

City Pharma: Excellent selection of well priced skincare and beauty; make sure to go with a shopping list!

A New Season Back to School Moodboard

Photos by Beatrice GranadosIt’s around this time of year, the new pencil case nostalgia and back to school playground bells ringing in my ears, that I start itching to spend money like I have the stuff to burn. LEAVE MY POCKETS AND REPLACE YOURSELVES WITH BURGUNDY CORD, I dramatically bellow into the distance, patting myself down and rifling through old handbags like I’m looking for treasure.

Obviously it’s the breath of fresh air into my most-worn that I’m really craving and definitely not the urge to empty my bank balance, and with this knowledge in mind (and before The Big Wardrobe Sort Out which admittedly I never got round to doing for summer)- I thought I’d share some of images and outfits that have been re-inspiring me before I go on a total bender on Vinted (have you ever heard a less poetic sentence? No, me neither). Whether that’s Pinterest ideas or outfit recipes that I turn to again and again this time of year- half of the fun is shaking up what you already have and wearing it again with brand new eyes in just a bit of a new way.

When it comes to dressing any time from late September, the below are a series of outfits that I find myself coming back to again and again. All rooted in a heavy dose of nostalgia, a sprinkling of sixties and some true 70s news anchor energy for good measure. They are as follows:

THE MINI:

A pinafore dress, layered with frilly or dagger collared shirt/slim roll neck, tights and Mary Janes (I feel like over the knee boots also work very well for this).

THE CORDS:

Cords in a warm tonal colour, paired with a denim jacket (the perfect thing to go underneath coats for when it’s colder too), a buttoned up cardigan, t-shirt and fun trainers or fun ankle boots.

THE DENIM:

Double denim galore! Denim is a true baseline for my autumn wardrobe and really does the most in an outfit when it’s paired with beautiful tan pieces and a silky neck scarf, or even a bomber jacket for a real Sex Education cast member feel. In short, if it’s good enough for George Harrison or Aimee Gibbs, it’s a go go.

 THE SUIT:

A two (or three) piece suit for a lifestyle I frankly do not lead and class I do not teach, but every September convince myself it could be a valuable addition to my wardrobe (surprisingly they always *do* get worn- there’a a corporate girl in me forever waiting for her time to shine).

And! If I’m not abiding by one of the four styling pillars above, chances are I’ll be taking inspiration from the below three styling seasonings, which always help draw my focus onto the things I’m particularly attracted to during a season (especially if I’ve just seen something I’m giddy for, and can *really* pick apart what I’m loving about it and whether I can find something similar secondhand) whether that’s the…

  COLOUR

Whether that’s primary-coloured socks to make summer shoes autumn friendly or a soft pastel blouse to add a little softness to richer autumn tones or for A* under-knit layering- the power of mixing up the colours you think ‘match’ and go together can truly open up so many avenues. So often I’ll see a knit and perhaps realise it’s not the jumper I love but the colour and the way it’s been styled unexpectedly. After my pal Kerry introduced it to me (a woman who is also so, so brilliantly versed in styling colour), for my birthday I received this Japanese colour dictionary which is truly WONDERFUL at helping you work out complimentary colours and the way tones work together. I’ve always been a stickler for textbook traditional coordination when it comes to getting dressed, and this truly spins it on it’s head which has been truly refreshing when putting an outfit together.

  SHAPES

‘Tis the season where a summer solely built on ethereal floaty dresses merges with a juxtaposition of mannish tailoring, three tiered layering (give me a roll neck, sweater vest and blazer as a minimum pls) and interesting shapes to really help create outfits that feel pulled together and ‘me’. I feel like I’ve properly learnt about the shapes that work for me from season to season; whether that’s a particular shape of jeans (normally sailor cut, with front pockets), a dress length that I know will work well with boots (longer than a midi but not quite full length) or the type of coat I’ll wear every day- I know I’m far more likely to feel confident in what I’m wearing (and keep comparison at bay) when I’ve stuck to the shapes I know.

  TEXTURES

I think one of the most exciting things about autumnal dressing are the total collage of textures that you can play with when getting dressed. We’re striding out of linen season and into a time where anything from jumbo cord, thick aran knits, rich velvet, silky satins and silks, indigo denims, smooth leathers and cosy cashmeres are all on the agenda. Nothing is off limits! As well as cheese and pickle, Lea & Perrins and macaroni and a hot chocolate and an autumnal walk; a vintage printed silk blouse and a great pair of cords or some dark denim and rich oranges truly make for two of the iconic duos of autumn.

My Current Top Tier Foundations

(Photos by Beatrice Granados)When it comes to beauty, I rotate my makeup like I do my cereal options in the morning- which, for a creature of habit like me, is really not a lot. When I like something, I turn to it every day without fail (which, in a dream world would be a bit like the M&S Triple Chocolate Crunch).

I use it until I ‘HIT PAN!’ as the millennial YouTube girlies might have said! I use a tube until the scissors are pulled out to snip off the bottom and the pump is scraped dry. And then when it runs out, I’ll often go back to it unless something very shiny (or, if we’re talking about the Cereal Aisle in Sainsbury’s, chocolatey) can tempt me in first. Which, is often why, when it comes to beauty I end up waxing lyrical about the same products a lot. I know what I like and what feels good to me, and know that if something works- it’s going to take a lot to knock it off it’s spot.

So today I thought I’d share some of my foundation (and concealer) favourites. The bedrock of my base and truly what I can only describe as my Kellogg’s Crunch Nut of the make up world- the Quaker Oats of concealers! The Frosties of foundations! (I’ll stop before the analogy eats itself for breakfast)- but in short, the ones I really love. All tried and tested and pretty much perfect whether you’re after full coverage or some serious glow too…

The Every Day One – NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation

I’m almost certain that I have used this foundation for well over a decade now, and every time I rediscover it after a pause of being lulled towards something new for a month or two- it always, always reminds me why I keep coming back. There is nothing I don’t like about this foundation. It gives amazing full coverage (without feeling heavy or bedding into any creases or lines) yet still leaves me feeling glowy even *after* I’ve powdered. A little also goes a long way and I never feel like I’ve got a lot on when I wear this, despite it being a very hardworking senior in my make up collection.

The Special Occassion One – L’ancôme Tient Idole Ultra Wear Care & Glow

Arguably the newest to my arsenal (and the one with the name which, when repeated, makes you feel like a top professional make up artist- “Oh this? I have L’ancôme Tient Idole Ultra Wear’ to thank!”) This is one of the more heavy-duty foundations that I own, but would be the one I’d go to if I needed something for a) a headlining performance on stage somewhere (unlikely, but let’s never rule it out) or b) a headlining performance at Lucky Voice after dinner in Soho (likely). It’s got excellent coverage, a dappling of skincare included (double win) and also feels buildable that it would make a great daily make-up companion too.

The Easy Peasy One – Ilia Skin Rewind Complexion Stick

Oh Ilia, how I love thee! Whether that’s their brushes (SO good), or their innovative products that make me think I’ve seen it all (or a good lot of it), when I never ever have. This bad boy is a jack of all trades, master of, well, all. Acts as a foundation or concealer depending on what you need it for, and *sort of* reminds me of the Glossier Stretch concealer in a slightly more heavy duty stick format (and also contains skincare ingredients including Ceramide-Peptide Complex which, when used regularly does it’s fair bit to smooth your complexion too- which I’ll report back on but sounds remarkably impressive). Although I certainly wouldn’t describe this product as novelty, the fact it comes in a stick applicator definitely adds a bit of fun to the mix (arguably, it’s one of the only products I’d let me toddler help me apply) and makes quick top ups feel like less of a performance than if you were to whip out your foundation and brush/sponge on the go.

The Dessert Island One – Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer

This concealer is truly glorious- the creme de la creme. A painfully chic master of disguise- if it were a person it would be the Elizabeth Taylor of make up products! It’s luxurious, it’s fancy and it’s SO good at what it does. It’s also creamy, smoother than a Luther Vandross song and thick enough to cover things whilst seamlessly gliding on as if it were performing the Bolero- it’s! that! good! Often, on a very good skin day I can get away with a few slicks of this and a good blend and I’m set to go- and there are very few days it doesn’t accompany me for a day out in town. A true make-up BFFL, if you like.

The New One – Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm

The rumours are true, everything Jamie Genevieve touches turns to glow! She’s a master of her craft, and this new launch from Jamie, is unsurprisingly, brilliant. It’s the lightest of the lot and would be the thing I’d turn to on a ‘no make up make up day’- the kind where you’re popping to Tesco/a pilates class/the nursery run and don’t *really* care about make up all that much, but would rather not look like you’ve just rolled out of bed either. It’s glowy, makes for the most deliciously dewy base (without giving you that oily look) and if it can transform even the slightest hint of less than 7 hour sleep face, then I’m a happy girl (and it does! hurrah)!
