The Principle of Moments by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson

I first started reading the digital ARC of this book but I ended up waiting for the hardcover launch to get a physical copy as this is the sort of story you need to pick up and carry with you, pore over the words and feel the weight of it in your hands. Plus the time-travel and (archival) found footage elements are more easily navigated on paper.

So going beyond all the practicalities, I loved the galaxy-spanning ride through space and time, with regency romance vibes and futuristic (albeit so timely for our day) battles against tyranny — that sets this book in a realm beyond time. And despite the burdens carried by the MCs, there is humour, courage, romance and spark that makes this one of my top books of 2024 so far.

This book is an absolutely crashing wave of seafaring, piracy and womanhood based on the life of a real woman pirate, Mary Read— written in an impeccable style that strikes you with it’s beauty and emotion under the guise of simplicity and pragmatism. A glittering and salty reflection of the golden age of piracy.
