A California native, John A. Greenwald is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and a former copywriter for several major advertising agencies. He later became a teacher and began helping high school students learn how to write. He lives with his wife, Carol, in Monterey.

It is a process of discovery and revision, lots and lots of revision. If you think the ideas are great, see what happens. Maybe the tangents become the new storyline. Maybe not. You won't know until you try.

Ultimately there needs to be coherence with a beginning, a middle and an end. At this point it sounds like your story is still trying to find itself. Play with it. Experiment.

Ultimately you have no way of knowing whether something will work are not until you have tried it.

Pride and Prejudice is one of those books I can read more than once, and it never gets old.

Given the context of the times, Elizabeth Bennett stands out for her intelligence and independence. She doesn't bow to what is demanded by the social conventions of the time. That strikes me is quite admirable and heroic.

There are certainly other worthy candidates for favorite fictional couple, and I would love to hear other suggestions. (less)

A Perfume By Any Other Name Would Not Smell As Sweet

When you write a book you have certain hopes. That the reviews will be kind. That readers will respond. That word of mouth will be strong. But never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would inspire a perfume.

But inspire it did. And the person so inspired was Paz de la Calzada, a Spanish artist now based in San Francisco.
