John Locke received his undergraduate degree in Computer Graphic Design, and masters in Arts and Liberal Studies with a concentration in communication from SUNY Empire State College. He received his Ph.D. in Humanities and Culture at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati.
After serving for six years in the US Navy, Locke worked in public relations, advertising and marketing for over twenty years as an artist and creative director, and was co-owner of an internet marketing communications firm in Rochester, NY for 12 years. He has taught for SUNY Empire State College, Ithaca College’s Park School of Communication, Keuka College in the Finger Lakes region of New York, and presently at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh.

Over the years, Locke has produced numerous commercials for print, radio, and television, as well as two full-length video documentaries. Strait Talk: Politics, Propaganda and Perceptions Across the Florida Straits examines US/Cuban relations from the Cuban perspective and involved extensive research and production in 2003 in Havana and Washington, DC. Locke has published three collections of essays on political science and philosophy and most recently, an illustrated, historical novel: a sequel to Sir Thomas More’s Utopia titled Utopia Revisited, released in early 2019. Locke is currently working on the second book in the trilogy, Defending El Dorado.
Locke’s research interests include Latin American studies, leveraging media and communications to advance economic and social justice, and utopian literature and philosophy.
